Movies
01/10 01. The Glass House (2001) ** 1/4 Was not a bad film, and it managed to keep a pretty decent pace. Nothing ground-breaking, though and it got boring in a few points. 02/10 02. The Hills Have Eyes (2006) *** 1/2 I really enjoyed this film a lot more than I expected. Not a cinematic masterpiece, but a fun popcorn flick worth a watch. 04/10 03. Dawn of the Dead (2004) *** 3/4 Another unexpected enjoyable remake. It was pretty campy if you ask me and I didn't take it too seriosuly, but had fun watching this on an otherwiase miserable day. 06/10 04. Hard Candy (2005) **** 3/4 One of the best films in the genre that I have ever seen. Ellen Page's performance was phenomenal and this film was a breath of fresh air. I'd call it a must-see. 15/10 05. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning (2006) *** It was not that great, but it was about as good as I expected or better. This was a first time viewing and I was actually impressed at the quality of the film. Decent watch. 21/10 06. The Silence of the Lambs (1991) ***** Not only one of the best horror movies ever, but one of the best movies of all time. This is a classic that should be viewed by all, and I enjoyed this viewing greatly. TV Shows 01. Charmed 02x06 "That Old Black Magic" 02. Charmed 02x07 "They're Everywhere" 03. Because the extra long episodes of The Twilight Zone as well as Hammer House of Horrors episodes did not count, I think it's only fair for me to not count Masters of Horror (though I may watch a few).
Oct 1 1. Nosferatu (1922) - Not normally a midnight viewing kind of guy before a work day, but this one gets a special pass as it's Dracula day for me. 2. Dracula (1931) - The Lugosi version was a nice enticement, love it today as much as I did the first time I watched it. 3. Horror of Dracula (1958) - My favorite Christopher Lee Dracula and my second favorite Peter Cushing Van Helsing, good stuff. 4. Dracula - (1973) A great made for television version of Dracula featuring Jack Palance. Moody and tons of fun, Curtis Harrington deserves to be much better known than he is amungst fans. 5. Dracula (1979) - Frank Langella is a very well played Dracula, however, as much as I respect Mr. Olivier he's a weak Van Helsing compared to Cushing. Donald Pleasance is wasted, but that line could start the reviews of most of the films he appeared in. Didn't have time for the Warhol Dracula, but it will likely work in later. The Coppola Dracula sucks, and I was glad to not have time for it or the desire to make room. Oct 2 6. Man-Made Monster (1941) - Very rare for me to watch a classic horror film for the first time, but I finally got to see this one. I really enjoyed it, I'm sure the ending was a bit of a twist in it's time, but not surprising today. Just nice to see a young healthy happy Lon Chaney Jr. enjoying himself, and Lionel Atwill didn't hurt. Shorter than I expected. 7. The Black Cat (1941) - One of a normally boring series of scary/comedic old dark house films of an era, unlike many classic horror film fans I've got a bit of a soft spot for this one. Lugosi is fun in a small red herring role, (people that often complain that his role is small like to point at Ninotchka as proof that he was involved in major films, though this part was huge in comparison) the rest of the cast is pretty run of the mill including Broderick Crawford, Basil Rathbone, and Alan Ladd. Admittedly, with the talent involved it should have been great instead of just enjoyable, but it is what it is, and I liked watching an official version. 8. Horror Island (1941) - An above average horror who-done-it, but a below average horror film. An interesting scene or image or two, but overall, as forgettable as it was the first time I saw it. Oct 3 9. Night Monster (1942) - As disappointing this time as it was the first. Lugosi and Atwill and yawns. 10. Captive Wild Women (1943) - Fun, and really the only Aquanetta film I really wanted to own so doesn't bother me if the rest aren't released. Not a great night of movie watching. |
GOAL: 31
Currently Watched: 12 10.3 1. House of Wax (1953)* - I picked this up in prep for the big Holiday. Any movie that I see the remake of, I tend to try to track down the original of just to compare the two. Overall, I was really disappointed. There was a total lack of kills and tense moments and the story as compared to the newer remake was dull, and unimaginative. Vincent Price was his usual self, and did have me cracking up a few times, but he couldn't make up for what in reality was a very boring movie, that prob relied on the 3-D technique it was shown at during the original screenings. I personally would not recommend this unless you get a kick of seeing movies from the past for pure cheese factor. Rating 1/5 10.4 2. House of Wax (2005) - I like watching remakes back to back with originals when possible to compare the two while they're fresh in my mind. I actually really enjoy this movie, even if does star Paris Hilton. I found the story pretty creative esp. compared to the original, and enjoyed the many killings esp. the one of Paris. For some reason I find the little part where the main character cuts the girl's finger off with through the gate, with the pliers esp. painful. Rating 3/5 10.5 3. The Hills Have Eyes (1977)* - I couldn't wait to finally see the original since I'm a big fan of the remake, however I found this one just a big mess. I hated how the main character was the dog basically, and it was really the only one doing any damage to the mutants. I also found the mutants more white trash then mutants because of gov testing, and who's afraid of white trash? :) The only saving grace was the old man's scene where he was talking about how his son was born bad etc. Pure comedy gold, his story and the police man's reactions to it. Overall a pretty poor movie, with a very lame ending. Rating 1/5 10.14 4. The Hills Have Eyes (2006) - Already a fan of this movie, it was a real joy to watch after the remake. I like how the parts where the son goes to rescue his baby reminds of Evil Dead. When he's walking out with the dog, it's just really cool. Another great example of when a remake is better then the original in every regard. Better setup, story, and mutants that really scare you. Rating 3/5 10.15 5. The Hills Have Eyes II (2007) - Just an overall terrible movie. I had seen this one other time and it was tough to sit through then, and still is now. I only watch it to complete the series since it's so short. The acting must have been intentionally made to be bad, I'm hoping.... I'm not sure if they can come back with a part 3 after they really killed off the franchise if there was one. Rating 0/5 6. House (1986) - I thought this was one of the movies I enjoyed as a bit of a guilty pleasure, but didn't enjoy it much this time with a repeat viewing. It was "ok" but nothing to write home about. Having Norm from Cheers in it, is all it really has going for it to me. Rating 2/5 7. House II: The Second Story (1987)* - This was another I purchased for the challenge this year and a blind buy. I really liked this and would say it's much better then the first movie. Although it's not directly tied to the originals story, it has a similar premise - a house with crazy stuff going on inside it. Part 2 also includes a cast member of Cheers like the first, although I didn't like Cliff's part in this movie unlike Norm's in Part I. There are some pretty funny parts, and really enjoyed the grandfather and the catterpiller/dog thing(I want one!) This movie was a nice surprisesince I assumed it would stink, else I would have run across it before this year. Rating 3/5 10.17 8. Roseanne - Halloween Edition -WILD- - I thought it was time to mix in a holiday favorite and something lighter. I love these Halloween episodes, and remember thinking as a kid how I wanted to decorate and have parties like they did when I grew up. Well I don't have those parties, but do get into the mood much like them. I watched all episodes and must admit the last few really weren't that good, with them dropping much of the hoopla around the Halloween season. This will continue to be an annual watch. Rating 4/5 10.20 9. Cemetery Man (1994)* - Another blind buy, and a really pleasant surprise. I loved the humor, and the weirdness of this movie plus any movie with zombie's is good. Can't wait to watch this again. Rating 4/5 10.22 10. The Thing (1982)* - I hate to admit I've never seen this before, although I've heard many many good things. I thought the movie was ok, but hardly worth all the praise my friends give it. The Thing wasn't shown nearly clear enough to get a good idea of what it was, and the kills were hardly ever showed. Not great not terrible, just ok. Rating 3/5 11. April Fool's Day (1986) - I love this movie, and am not even sure why. Once you've seen it once and know the premise, there is little reason to rewatch it, but I find it reminds me of being a kid and seeing it for the first time. Most of the story once you know the ending, makes no sense. Like how did they pull it off, how did she know nobody would actually like kill her trying to escape etc.. It's fun though, and typical 80's horror which I love. Rating 3/5 10.31 12. Halloween (1978) - Not much to say, a classic, and a Halloween tradition. Sure the movie is a little slow, but it's one of the horror movies my wife will watch since is so gore free. Rating 5/5 * My first time watching the movie. -WILD- Denotes wildcard selection Another poor performance. Between the Red Sox going deep into Oct and winning the WS, the Patriots, and a week I was away on vacation, I just didn't have a good chance to hit my goal. My wife doesn't watch which hurts, so barring losing sleep I wasn't going to hit my goal. I'm happy though since over half was first time viewings, and enjoyed it much better that way, then last year. Can't wait for next year, and will try to start stockpiling new flicks for it. |

1) Re-Animator (1985) - haven't seen this one since it's days on laser disc(!). It brought me back to the day I first saw it at the State theater in Chicago - a $1.50 11am matinée;the floors were sticky, you could see the occasional rat in the aisles during bright scenes, and the audience was rude and raucous. The film's complete absence of PC decorum was something that Eli Roth and the Saw gang could not possibly aspire to, no matter how much gore they pile on.
2) Psycho(1960) 3) Psycho II (1983) 4) Psycho III(1986) 5) Psycho IV: The Beginning(1990) - decided to spend Saturday with Norman Bates ("call me Norman") between bouts of college football and the MLB playoffs. "II" is often considered the gem of the sequels, but I've found it to be so caught up in its twisty plot (a virus that affected the next two films) and 'clever' references to the original that the movie never caught fire for me. "III" is much more enjoyable - baroque, dark-humored and kinky, it's far more self-assured under Tony Perkins direction. Of the three sequels, I find myself returning again and again to "IV"; in spite of it's TV-movie plotting and pedestrian direction, Perkins' performance in the final film captured the melancholy of Norman Bates so perfectly that it is impossible to find a line that separates actor and character. 6) The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari(1920) 7) The Golem (1920) 8) Nosferatu, A Symphony of Horror (1922) - a Sunday of silent Horror. I'm very familiar with Caligari and Nosferatu, so The Golem was a new experience. I loved the story, but I must admit that the title monster was more impressive as a statue than when it actually came to life - it kinda looked like The Rock in a bad wig, and over-emoted way too much, even by silent acting standards. Nosferatu is, in my mind, a perfect horror film. Don't know why the Stoker estate sued the makers of a film that captured the spirit of the book so eloquently. Easily in the top three of the best horror films ever made. 9) 1408 (Director's Cut) - decided to sample a film from this century, and the news was not good. Loud, overdone and non-sensical, it was grounded only by John Cusack's committed performance, which was the only thing worth watching. A little too light on the Sam Jackson as well. 10) Bug - Intense horror film from - what's that? It's not a horror film? But the trailer said that it was the most - oh, I see. In any event, it was nice to see Friedkin on his game again, and Ashley Judd managed to stay hot without an ounce of makeup. 11) From Beyond - I recall being disappointed by this film when I first saw it in 1986, expecting more fun n' gore in the mode of it's predecessor, Re-Animator - my opinion has improved upon a second viewing, but I feel that something is still lacking. The characters are sketchy and underdeveloped, and the tone is too sedate for such outrageous material. Combs is good, but underutilized, Ken Foree has the right spirit (he looks like he just walked off the set of a Shaft movie), and Barbara Crampton is fearless as always. That's a girl I want to party with. 12) Zodiac - excellent serial killer film from David Fincher. It was a little flabby in the middle (I hope the forthcoming Director's cut is tighter, not longer), but elicited some truly scary moments, and not just from the murders. The casting, from top to bottom, was the best I'd seen in a very long time. Shoulda been a hit. 13) The Wicker Man(2006) - wrong-headed (and just wrong) remake of the classic that could serve as a Master class on what's wrong with Hollywood today. 14) Gorilla at Large - Lee J Cobb (trying on his Kinderman role for the first time), a blond, Cameron Mitchell as the weak hero, a goofy Lee Marvin and Warren Stevens as the Beaver, with a juicy Anne Bancroft (coo, coo, ca-choo, Mrs Robinson!) in a film noir/circus melodrama/killer Gorilla story. They sure don't make 'em like that anymore. 15) Revenge of the Zombies (1943) - Mix John Carradine, goose-stepping zombies and Mantan Moreland together and what do you get? Pure Saturday matinee enjoyment. 16) The Brood - call me crazy, but I prefer David Cronenberg's earlier, sloppier films - what he's gained in technical gloss and intellectual heft, he's somehow lost in emotional punch and immediacy. This film about a bad marriage conjures up some ugly emotions (marriage will do that to you), but reveals that at the end of the day it's about two selfish people trying to kill each other and a traumatized child staring ahead into a lifetime of torment. 17) Headless Horseman - This was a Sci-Fi Channel "Original" movie. Yeah, I shouldn't have watched it. 18) Murders in the Rue Morgue 19) The Black Cat 20) The Raven 21) The Invisible Ray 22) Black Friday 23) The Black Room 24) The Man They Could Not Hang 25) Before I Hang 26) The Boogie Man Will Get You 27) Cat People (1942) 28) The Curse of the Cat People 29) I Walked With A Zombie 30) The Body Snatcher 31) Isle of the Dead I'm going to bed. |

October 1, 2007
1. Dead Silence (2007) I'd been looking forward to seeing this one as the description sounded pretty interesting despite being part of a fairly tired cliche-ridden sub-genre of horror - that of the possessed ventriloquist dummy. I don't know if I've ever seen any really good movies of that type before. I would rate this movie essentially very average (although my wife thought it was horrible). The dialogue was trite, the music wasn't very creepy, and the cop seemed to want to be Gary Oldman. 2. The Seventh Victim (1943) The only film in the Val Lewton set that I hadn't seen up to now, it was as moody and slow paced as all of the other films in the set. I'm not sure I quite understand why there was such a sense of gloom abounding when the Satanists showed up on screen. I don't think I would want to belong to a group that couldn't find the humor in their evil...and they certainly seemed to do very little actual 'evil' during their satanic meetings. 3. Hobgoblins (1988) - MST3K I am not really sure if this was supposed to be a comedy or just a really inept attempt to make a horror movie. I could do without the rocking van and the bad '80s hair. October 2, 2007 4. The Innocents (1961) Slow and atmospheric, I hardly thought a film like this would be made in the early '60s. Seemed like a throwback to twenty years prior. Not much action, there were some creepy sequences but it was pretty talky building up to the final few minutes. A solid movie. 5. The Fog (1980) I liked this one more than I thought I was going to - by quite a bit. I really liked the establishment shots at the beginning of the movie - they were slow, but didn't feel overly long to me. I would imagine not a lot of money went into this movie as there really weren't any gore shots or creature effects to speak of - just a fog machine; yet, the film manages to feel very creepy and even the acting isn't bad. I gotta say, Jamie Lee never struck me as a particularly good looking woman in her younger pictures - kind of awkward and gangly - but, even so, I'd say she always exuded cool. Another solid film. 6. Cat People (1942) I've loved this movie since I was a kid - one of my top 5 horror movies probably. I wish I could see Simone Simon in more films - she was great in The Devil and Daniel Webster also - as she was stunningly beautiful and could really bring an otherworldliness to her scenes. This film is a classic that I think is overlooked oftentimes by the more prominent Universal creature films. 7. The House That Dripped Blood (1970) I haven't seen this film in twenty years since I was twelve or so; since I remember absolutely none of it except that the stories were penned by Robert Bloch (used to be one of my favorite authors), I am counting it as a first time viewing. Viewing this anthology with adult eyes, I'm somewhat let down. The plot lines are a LOT cheesier than I thought I remembered and the only story I really liked is the one about the little girl who turns out to be a witch. October 3, 2007 8. Night of the Living Dead (1968) I watched this movie not too long ago with the Rifftrax commentary. While there are certainly plenty of reminders that this film was pretty low-budget, I'm not sure it really deserves the 'treatment.' I was a bit worried that hearing Mike Nelson skewer this horror classic would affect my enjoyment of the movie in the future; fortunately, not so. This film just creeps me out. Barbara is the only really weak link in the acting department. This year I plan to finally watch the rest of the 'dead' tetralogy. 9. Spider Baby (1964) I'm not completely sure, but I THINK this was supposed to be a comedy. Either I believe that, or it was a really really bad movie;) The opening and closing narration is some of the funniest shit I've heard in awhile (worthy of Criswell). It did have a few effectively creepy moments, but overall it was wet down by the comic aspects. 10. Dawn of the Dead (1978) Well...I gotta admit, I thought this was overrated after hearing so much about it for so many years. I vastly preferred Night to this one...the low budget creepiness of the zombies in the first one always sends chills up my spine; unfortunately, I was aware of the so called 'social commentary' present in Dawn so it was tough not feeling bludgeoned over the head with it. The campy aspects of the movie didn't sit well with me either; plus, there were just too many sequences that were dull and lacking in excitement. Judging from what I've heard, I expect that I will be disappointed by Day and Land as well. We'll see... October 4, 2007 11. Mark of the Vampire (1935) It's been awhile (a LONG while) since I've seen this movie, but it never really left any strong impressions on me. Indeed, I found it about as anemic as I remembers which I thought strange considering Tod Browning's masterpieces Freaks and Dracula. I like Lionel Barrymore but I just didn't buy him as a Van Helsing type. It's one way to pass an hour but that's about it. Pass. 12. The Mask of Fu Manchu (1932) I enjoyed this film quite a bit although it was more of an adventure film with a bit of evil mastermind/mad scientist thrown in. Boris Karloff, as always, greatly entertains. October 5, 2007 13. The Devil Doll (1936) This movie was a bit campier than I expected. Of the Tod Browning films I have seen before, nothing really had any of those kind of elements before. Seeing Lionel Barrymore in drag as an old woman was pretty silly. I just don't think Barrymore works well in horror movies, but now I've seen him in two (both by Browning). Overall, I liked this film though. 14. Doctor X (1932) This old film was a sure fire winner for me! I really liked the use of two-strip technicolor used here. It was so rarely used for anything like this at this time that it provided a very interesting distinction for this movie. The plot was a little bit silly, but the creepy factor of otto the butler and the final moon killer reveal was terrific. Highly recommended 15. The Return of Doctor X (1939) This film is not related in any way to the film Doctor X from above. It features a young Humphrey Bogart trapped in B movie Hell. Actually, I enjoyed this flick more than I thought I would, but it's really nothing very new or interesting in Horror movie land. Nothing particularly creepy - lots of bunsen burners, beakers, test tubes, and electricity as one rogue Doctor brings bodies back to life - only paler and sporting trendy white streaks in their hair. 16. Dagon (2001) I've had this film in my to watch pile for ages now. I'm a huge fan of Lovecraft's fiction, but haven't seen too many films that could do justice to the sheer creepy and ethereal dreams that are evident in these stories/novellas. While I enjoy Stuart Gordon's Re-animator more and more each time I watch it, I think it tends to go more for camp than for painting a picture that does justice to its source material (not that that's a bad thing if the tone is respectful which Gordon is). Dagon, however, does a pretty quality job of creating the right amount of tension and build-up, the feeling that something is out of the ordinary in the normal seeming coastal village until all hell breaks loose. The movie also refrains from showing, or lingering, on too much gore EXCEPT for one key 'money piece' scene which is quite bloody (a bit more than I like personally). Will keep this one for future viewings. 17. Isle of the Dead (1945) Another great performance by Boris Karloff. Typical slow-moving, atmospheric Val Lewton piece, this time taking place on a Greek isle as Karloff commands a military unit that may be carrying plague. Very enjoyable. 18. Lemora: A Child's Tale of the Supernatural (1973) I thought this movie started off promising with some moments I found genuinely creepy, but overall I was left wanting. I was promised Lesbian vampire seductions and got nutten'! It felt more like an episode of Dark Shadows or a made-for-tv movie than a genuine horror film. I have no idea why the Catholic church banned this tepid movie. October 6, 2007 19. Bedlam (1946) This is a Val Lewton film that I saw for the first time when the dvd set was released and this is my second time watching it. I just cannot seem to warm up to it in any way. It's just not what I expect from a Val Lewton film. There really aren't any moments that creep me out and I don't find the place or atmosphere particularly effective or real. Probably won't try this one again. 20. Plasterhead (2006) The concept for this movie sounded so silly that I just had to watch it - a killer with a plaster cast on his face for the whole movie. Unfortunately, it just turned out to be standard slasher horror fare, completely average - not even anything silly enough to laugh at except for a very strange gas station attendant who takes everything you say as an accusation against his sexuality yet likes to suck fingers - yes it's a strange scene. Not really recommended. 21. The Greatest American hero - "The Beast In Black" (*Wildcard #1*) This episode freaked me out as a kid. Still love this show and this episode is still pretty creepy. Great halloween episode. 22. Brides of Dracula (1960) Nothing to do with Dracula and really whisper thin plot that is just there to give Peter Cushing some work. Bland and dull. 23. Manhunter (1986) I saw this film once about 14 years ago and thought it was laughably bad, primarily because of the constant use of '80s synths. The soundtrack took me out of the movie then and it takes me out of the movie now. I also thought that the actor portraying the protagonist wasn't particularly good in the role nor was Brian Cox right for Lecter - naturally this is probably colored by how could Hopkins was in Silence of the Lambs. It has its moments, but they're somewhat few and far between for me. 24. Omen III: The Final Conflict (1981) Why oh why did I bother with this one? For some odd reason, my mother was always recommending this movie topmost in the omen franchise - but I think she has the hots for Sam Neill. I thought Neill overacted terribly in many of his scenes and the ending was cheesy as hell - not even any interesting death scenes to look forward to. I know the last one will be worse... October 7, 2007 25. Omen IV: The Awakening (1991) ...and it IS! They could have at least gotten a cute charismatic kid like the original Damien in The Omen, but NOOO...she's just a sarcastic smart-ass little brat that goes around glaring at everyone. Terrible effects, deaths, and 'twist' ending make this a 'skip it' at all costs. 26. Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988) This one was pretty enjoyable in a '50s invasion movie kind of way. It feels a tad long at 85 minutes, but I give it a thumbs up. October 9, 2007 27. Hannibal Rising (2007) I never knew that WWII could be so boring...these scenes at the beginning seemed interminable. The screenwriter really didn't seem to 'get' sociopaths very well...it was pretty bland and unexciting stuff. October 10, 2007 28. Friday the 13th (1980) A little bit tedious, but not nearly as bad as I remembered it. The scenes at the end with the killer are a bit talky and I find it pretty hard to take that the killer could take out all the teens but one. I like the surprise reveal at the end, but my wife found it pretty cheesy. I haven't seen any of the other movies except Jason X so I'm going to try and watch them all this season. October 11, 2007 29. Masters of Horror - Incident On an Off a Mountain Road My first time viewing any of the Masters of Horror episodes. Love the intro montage - creepy as hell. The episode had some pretty good parts. I rather liked the flashback scenes showing the main protagonist in a relationship with a survivalist type. Some of the conversations reminded me of the timebomb2000 forum threads - a bit extreme at times. Pretty good acting although I could have done without the old crazy lunatic character. October 13, 2007 30. Masters of Horror - H.P. Lovecraft's Dreams in the Witch House This is probably my least favorite Stuart Gordon adaptation of Lovecraft. I would think he was used to working with fairly low budgets so I'm surprised I didn't like this one more. It might simply be because this was not one of my favorite stories to begin with. The pictures in the Necronomicon were pretty creepy but a lot of it was kinda cheesy. 31. Masters of Horror - Dance of the Dead Didn't think I would like this one when it started, but the dance of the dead was pretty creepy and the ending rather sadistic. Overall, it was above average. Also liked the fact that the story was by Richard Matheson who used to be one of my favorite authors and has written some pretty nifty teleplays in his time. 32. Masters of Horror - Jennifer I liked this one a LOT - creepy and sexy at the same time. It ran a tad too long, but that's a minor quibble. 33. Friday the 13th Pt 2 (1981) Hadn't seen this sequel before. It was kind of dark during many of the attack scenes so it was hard to be wowed by any of the gore - still a bit pedestrian with lots of slashed throats although I liked the use of the pitchfork. Jason's pillowcase was a bit silly. 34. Masters of Horror - Chocolate This was a bit of a strange surreal one that had a touch of black humor to it. Enjoyable, but not really very frightening. 35. Masters of Horror - Homecoming I really liked this one, but felt it was a trying a bit too hard to be topical and just felt a bit too biased for me (regardless of my own beliefs on the IRAQ conflict). 36. Masters of Horror - Deer Woman Lots of breast shots, but the premise was just a bit too silly and hokey for me to take at all seriously. The acting was so atrocious that I just think it must have been a comedy, but I didn't really find it funny. 37. Friday the 13th Pt 3 (1982) The teens weren't as good at acting in this one and there were some hugely misguided efforts to add humor to the mix. The soundtrack wasn't as good and the credits weren't done as well as the first two. I did like Jason better in this one once he got his hockey mask. I hope the 3-D effects look better with glasses; they're distracting without. October 14, 2007 38. Masters of Horror - John Carpenter's Cigarette Burns This one was pretty gory and violent - erring a bit too much on the grotesque side for me. Add to that the fact that I've always found the plotline of a mysterious movie that makes people commit violent acts or go crazy to be trite, cliche, and tedious. Hard to take seriously. 39. Masters of Horror - The Fair Haired Girl Pretty good, but lost me a little bit at times with what was going on. Loved the classical music motif at the beginning. 40. Masters of Horror - Sick Girl This one was pretty good. I thought the use of a gay character was quite well done and treated matter-of-factly which is fairly refreshing in any televised show. There was some subtle humor with the bugs chasing the dog around that actually made me chuckle. Nice effort. 41. Masters of Horror - Pick Me Up I enjoyed the scenes with 'the cowboy' and found myself wanting the cowboy to appear in cowboy-less scenes...where's poochie? 42. Day of the Dead (1985) This was just bad...not just bad...BAD bad... 43. Friday the 13th - The Final Chapter (1984) Par for the course Jason movie. More nudity, but didn't find the teens as good looking as previous movies. Corey Feldman did pretty well, but didn't really like the ending all that much. Almost half way there... 44. Masters of Horror - Haeckel's Tale I really enjoyed this one. It was like a black sabbath, a dark, twisted fairy tale - a mixture of The Monkey's Paw with an Orgy of the Dead (though not boring like Ed Wood's vision of it). Definitely an unexpected pleasure. October 15, 2007 45. H.P. Lovecraft's From Beyond (1986) Not quite as good as Re-animator, but still pretty fun. i love Jeffrey Combs although my wife didn't appreciate the deliberate 'over-acting' which I thought was pretty fun and effective for this type of film. It got a bit crazy at the end, but a fun time. October 16, 2007 46. The Dead Next Door (1988) Utter garbage. Beyond terrible acting, lame comedy, and utterly dull! Don't bother. 47. Land of the Dead (2005) Not as bad as Day of the Dead by any stretch of the imagination, but the zombies seemed a bit too dull with not much really going on. October 17, 2007 48. Scream (1996) Saw this when it came out and I never really understood its immense popularity. I just wasn't really interested in a deconstruction of the slash genre. Watching it now, I find it hard to watch Henry Winkler without thinking of Arrested Development or the kid who plays Stu without thinking of Hackers. Very average movie, but I'm determined to force myself to watch Scream 2 and 3 sometime this week. October 18, 2007 49. Masters of Horror - Imprint I kind of expected this one to be rather violent and difficult for me to watch, and I was quite correct. Needles are not my favorite things, especially when used in sensitive areas. Not sure I completely understood the ending, but it was definitely creepy. 50. Masters of Horror - The Damned Thing More pretty grotesque action in this suspenseful tale directed by Tobe Hooper. I thought it was pretty effective, but goodness gracious, I don't really like seeing a guy smash his own head in with a hammer and then scrape against the bone - harsh. 51. Masters of Horror - Family This one was a bit too overtly vulgar for my tastes, but it did have a nice twisted edge to it that I liked a lot. October 19, 2007 52. Scream 2 I just found this one to be too dull. I'm not sure I even remember or care what happened in it. 53. Scream 3 I could take the first two seriously. This one completed the descent into parody of a parody and everyone seemed to be winking in a self-conscious manner at the camera. October 20, 2007 54. Masters of Horror - The V Word This one had a darkness about it that made it difficult to take my eyes off the screen. Refreshing... 55. Masters of Horror - Sounds Like Descent into madness has rarely been portrayed so effectively. Would like to rewatch this one again soon. 56. Masters of Horror - Pro-Life And here we have this season's attempt to be relevant to today's pressing issues! Well, I found the male abortion scene to be rather difficult to watch. 57. Masters of Horror - Pelts I think I wanted to throw up a couple times during this one, and I often had to take my eyes away. Too gory for me. 58. Angel - "Are You Now or Have You Ever Been" (*Wildcard #2*) My second wildcard is one of my favorite episodes from the Angel TV series. It has a constant doom and gloom about the events that are shown from Angel's past which are, fortunately, lightened up by some humorous moments in the present. Great TV 59. I Know What You Did Last Summer As if I needed further proof that Sarah Gellar, Freddie Prinze, and Jennifer Hewitt can't act, but throw them all on screen together and you have utter putrescence. And I've got the second one waiting to queue up...;( 60. Werewolf (1996) - MST3K I think I've probably watched this episode of MST3K more than any other - it's my wife's favorite. Foreign people talking in Flagstaff attics, the ever changing haircut, and action Paul go to make this a great break in the horror marathon. 61. The Lost Boys (1987) Well I had my suspicions this would be a typical '80s film but it got such great reviews I had to check it out. Not a great film or even a particularly good film. I guess you had to have seen it at the time. October 21, 2007 62. Masters of Horror - The Screwfly Solution This one was really neat. It played just like an episode of The Twilight Zone, more so to me than any of the others. Terrifying vignette. 63. Masters of Horror - Valerie On the Stairs 64. Masters of Horror - Right To Die 65. Masters of Horror - We All Scream for Ice Cream October 23, 2007 66. Masters of Horror - The Black Cat October 26, 2007 67. Masters of Horror - The Washingtonians October 27, 2007 68. Masters of Horror - Dream Cruise 69. Friday the 13th Pt V - A New Beginning October 28, 2007 70. Friday the 13th Pt VI - Jason Lives 71. The New Twilight Zone - "Shatterday", "A Little Peace and Quiet", "Gramma" (*Wildcard #3*) 72. Friday the 13th Pt VII - The New Blood 73. Friday the 13th Pt VIII - Jason Takes Manhattan 74. Jason Goes To Hell - The Final Friday October 28, 2007 75. Jason X * Titles in Bold are viewed for the first time Michael |

I have one heck of a month planned out so I know I will not make the 100 I did last year, but we will see what I can squeeze in over the next 31 days.
OK, I know I said I would not get 100 this year, but this is pitiful. I need to pick up the pace. 1. Feast (HD DVD) 2. See No Evil 3. The House on Haunted Hill (1999) 4. Bug 5.
