2023 DVDTalk Art House/Indie née Criterion Challenge List Thread - legacy year 15
2023 Indie/Art House Challenge LIST Thread
Dusk 31 August - Dawn 1 October

It was agreed previously that this challenge implicitly includes silent films and what have been classed in the U.S. as "foreign language films." Talkies that aren't in English, in other words.

The first annual Indie/Art House Challenge evolved out of what was previously the Criterion Challenge. In this challenge, we emphasize exploration rather than a raw quantity of films viewed. We encourage you to take some time and dive into the films you watch. Check out any included supplemental materials. Look up reviews and essays. In other words, immerse yourself! So… what exactly is an Art-House film? It’s a sort of “You’ll know it when you see it” thing, but Wikipedia offers the following characterization:

Pre-Horror Participants
We welcome the horror enthusiasts among us who just can’t wait until October. Think of this as a chance to emphasize Art-horror, and save the really schlocky stuff for next month. You’ll find a considerable amount of eligible content!

Distributor Safe List
To make selecting titles easier, any movie made available by the following distributors is classified as "safe" for this challenge, even if it should be a mainstream production. You are not required to watch their edition. You're not limited to these distributors, though, because there are plenty others who bring to us the kinds of films we're after. If you have any questions, ask in the discussion thread.

Arrow Films (horror here;)

The Criterion Collection (horror here)

The Criterion Channel / all past streaming titles (horror here;)

Film Movement (horror here;) / Film Movement Plus

Kino Lorber (horror here;) / Kino Marquee (horror here;) / Kino Now

Milestone Films

Mubi

Oscilloscope Laboratories

Powerhouse Films / Indicator (Hammer here;)

Sundance Now

Checklist (Optional, as always)

The checklist is intended solely as a prompt for participants who want a template for organizing their viewing. September 1 1. Rubber (2010) TV. Amusing, but too precious by half and overly fond of its use of literary tropes. I have to admire the way the director makes the audience view Robert the tire as a thinking being. September 4 2. Harlan County U.S.A (1976) TV. A record of a coal miner's strike in eastern Kentucky in 1973 3. Roger and Me (1989). TV. Despite some chronology issues, Roger Moore's doc about the disintegration of Flint Michigan after GM shut down its plants there, and the utter disregard of management for the worker's welfare still retains its power. September 12 4. Willie Dynamite (1974) Blu-Ray. Best known for playing Gordon on Sesame Street, Roscoe Orman plays the baddest pimp in New York who ends up losing everything, but just maybe finding himself. The script and the perfomances here elevate this film above the usual blaxploitation flick. September 21 5. Blow Out (1981)-TCM-John Travolta gives a solid performance along with Nancy Allen and John Lithgow as a hitman. September 28 6. The Cook, the Thief, His Wife and Her Lover (1990)-Soap2Day-RIP Michael Gambon. Why hasn't this gloriously dark satire received a 4K release? Greenaway's beautiful Baroque set pieces deserve to be seen properly. September 30 7. The Witch (2015)-MAX-What a phenomenally scary film! The director really captures the feel of 17th-century America, when an English family exiled from Plymouth might as well be on another planet in a hostile new world filled with unknown dangers. The movie also takes no prisoners--that scene with the baby and the witch (shudder), and the ending! I understand why some viewers think the reveal that the witch is real at the beginning is a spoiler, but the witch picking off the family isn't the focus as much as the family's dysfunction that allows the witch to take them. 8. Lamb (2021)-Showtime-The producers are clearly trying to convey something profound here, but what it is exactly escapes me. I found Lamb to be unpleasant and disquieting, although the Iceland setting is gorgeous. |

Criterion/Art House Challenge 2023 Goal: 50+ films Commentary or Supplemental Material for each film (as available) August 31: 1. In a Lonely Place (1950) + Piece from 2002 featuring Curtis Hansen Each time I watch this I think it's Bogart's best. I read Dorothy Hughes' book earlier this year and was eager to revisit the film adaptation.. The Hansen piece is great. 2. Broadcast News (1987) Rewatch of an old favorite. Still adore it, particularly the Albert Brooks performance. September 1: 3. Original Cast Album: Company (1970) + Documentary Now! - Original Cast Album: Co-Op (2019) An incredible document of a bit of musical theatre history, and a spot-on parody. September 2: 4. Inland Empire (2006) + Ballerina (2007) Finally cracked open the disc I bought from a flash sale last year. Slightly more penetrable than the first time I saw it, but I'm always along for the ride. Hoping to revisit more Lynch this month. 5. One False Move (1992) Tense and uncompromising neo-noir by Carl Franklin. So so good. September 3: 6. Mamma Rosa (1962) Pasolini's neorealist portrait of a mother and son was a first time view as I make my way to the end of TSPDT. September 5: 7. Missing (1992) I'd forgotten how powerful this one is. Great performances by Sissy Spacek and Jack Lemmon in a heartbreaking true story. September 6: 8. The Virgin Suicides (1999) September 7: 9. One False Move (1992) with director commentary September 9: 10. Walker (1987) "One must act with severity or perish." + Dispatches from Nicaragua (making of doc) 11. Repo Man (1984) "It happens sometime. People just explode." = Iggy Pop Interview + Cast Interviews September 10: 12. Eating Raoul (1982) "This world is overflowing with millions of sexual freaks." + The Secret Cinema (1967) + Naughty Nurse (1969) September 11: 14. The Gleaners and I (2000) 15. The Gleaners and I: Two Years Later (2002) September 12: 16. Cameraperson (2016) September 13: 17. Topsy-Turvy (1999) September 14: 18. Jane B by Agnes V (1988) September 15: 19.
