with the R1 being such a disappointment, i'm wondering what the R2 set is like ?

I do not have the R2 Rocky boxset, but my understanding reading all the reviews about the R1 boxset was that Rocky 2 in R2 was remastered while ours (R1) was not. R2 Rocky 2 I believe has an anamorphic transfer enhanced for widescreen. R1 does not, it is the same version that originally came out back when.

I do not know about the audio side, though.

Ok, I don't have them but here's what I found on http://www.dvdrama.com (in french):

Rocky 1 SE:
Anamorphic + DD 5.1 (special edition)

Rocky 2:
Widescreen (!!not anamorphic!!), DD 2.0, no special features

Rocky 3:
Anamorphic, DD 5.1, no special features
