Parker (2013, Taylor Hackford) - Jason Statham, Michael Chiklis, Nick Nolte

I searched, but didn't find a thread about this, which is surprising since it's set to be released on January 25, 2013 (bumped from October of this year). It stars Jason Statham in the title role, along with Jennifer Lopez, Michael Chiklis, and Nick Nolte.

An older article about it, when Statham was still in talks:

Jason Statham in Talks to Star in PARKER for Director Taylor Hackford
by Phil Brown
Posted: April 18th, 2011 at 7:14 am

Jason Statham, the man with the finest British growl in the business, is in talks to star in the new thriller Parker. Adapted from a popular series of novels by Donald E. Westlake (writing under the pseudonym Richard Stark), the film will cast the Crank star as an honorable thief (would Statham ever play any other kind of thief?). The character has inspired several solid cinematic outings before, so the source material definitely has a successful pedigree. The film will be directed by journeyman filmmaker Taylor Hackford for the production company trifecta of Sierra/Affinity, Incentive Filmed Entertainment and Sidney Kimmel Entertainment.

Following the unfortunate box office disappointment for the surprisingly entertaining action outing The Mechanic, Variety reports today that Jason Statham is in talks to star in Parker as his next cinematic ode to bullets and explosions. The title character is taken from Donald Weslake’s popular series of novels stretch all the way from the 60s to the 2000s. The first Parker outing The Hunter was previously adapted into both John Boorman’s 1967 crime classic Point Blank and the underrated gritty Mel Gibson outing Payback. However, both movies were fairly loose adaptations of the novel that didn’t even retain the character’s name. This new production seems to be the first attempt to lift the character to the big screen in full force, though the adaptation seems to be a compilation of Parker’s greatest hits rather than being based on a specific book.

The concept is barebones crime fiction focusing on a professional thief with a strong code of ethics that prevents him from ever stealing from people in need. However, when pushed against the wall, he has no problem resorting to violence. It sounds like the type of hard boiled criminal protagonist tailor made for Statham’s grizzled voice and chiseled ass-kicking exterior. While it would be nice to see Statham returning to the frankly batshit insane (in the best possible sense) Crank series, it sounds like the underwhelming box office receipts may have put that franchise to rest, Still, Statham is one of the few genuine old school action stars to emerge in the last decade of CGI superhero movies and his presence behind a cool car with an attractive lady and an itchy trigger finger is always welcome on the big screen. Hopefully he latches on to this project.

The script was written by John J. McLaughlin whose most recent credit was on Black Swan and directing duties will be handled by Taylor Hackford. As a filmmaker, Hackford has enjoyed a long career on projects varying from his Oscar-nominated work on Ray to his not-so-nominated work on The Devil’s Advocate. He’s definitely an efficient filmmaker who doesn’t like to repeat himself and will probably try to invest a little more than just explosions into the movie. He told Variety, “I don’t want to get stuck in a genre. What I like the most about this piece of material is that you can take a genre piece like this and turn it into a great movie.” Certainly John Boorman managed to take the character of Parker and use it as a springboard for an esoteric experiment in narrative deconstruction and expressive editing, so elevating this material has been done before. Whether or not Hackford can do the same remains to be seen and it’s probably dependent on if he can land a bankable lead like Statham. If all the pieces fall into place, this could be an interesting little genre flick. For now, cautious optimism surrounds the project. We’ll see who ends up in that lead role before reaching even minor levels of excitement.

Granted, I just finished reading The Hunter - the first Parker novel - this morning and it's the only one I've read so far, but that whole "code of ethics" thing seems completely wrong about the character. Maybe he evolves during the 24 novels centering around him, but in the first he hurt, stole from, and even killed innocents.

Also, I love Statham, but I don't see him dropping his accent for the role. Still, he's a bad ass, so maybe I'll just overlook that. But uh, I hope there's a good explanation for the hat:

In the meantime, I'll just have to rewatch Payback and Point Blank, this time to compare how Parker is portrayed in relation to the book.

I've been wanting to get into the books recently. The character sounds like a lot of fun to read on the page.

Huge Parker/Westlake fan, but Statham isn't quite who I picture in the role. And given Marvin's almost untouchable performance in POINT BLANK, he's got his work cut out for him.

Yeah, I've only read through The Score, but at this point, I have to agree. Parker has less a "code of ethics" and more a "rigid set of rules designed to keep him out of prison". And that rulebook (at least to where I am in the series) doesn't say anything about drawing a line at "the innocent".

I assume Chiklis is playing Mal? I always pictured a Paul Giamatti when I read The Hunter, but Chiklis will be good too. A little iffy on Statham as Parker.

POINT BLANK is on TCM tomorrow (Sunday Sept. 16) at 3:30 PM EST.

I'm a big Parker fan, having read all of the books published in the 1960s and '70s. (I still haven't gotten to the later group.) No movie's ever quite done justice to the character, not even POINT BLANK. THE OUTFIT (1973) is pretty good, but I was disappointed when I re-watched it on the big screen a year or two ago.

Statham is probably the best Parker-type actor around today, so I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I'm not so sure about Taylor Hackford, though. I would love to have seen Walter Hill do a Parker movie in his prime (1980s-early '90s).

And Atxbomber is right about:

"rigid set of rules designed to keep him out of prison"
Parker's a true professional and he has the tools of his trade and a set of strict principles designed for recruiting partners and carrying out the planning and execution of a job as well as its aftermath. It's not a code of ethics.

Every time I've read a Parker book, I've always been most comfortable visualizing Richard Egan in the part:

http://www.nndb.com/people/366/00011...an-2-sized.jpg

Egan even starred in a Parker-style heist film, DAY OF THE WOLVES (1971), about a military-type team of robbers who take over and isolate a Florida town to loot it. Egan wasn't one of the thieves, though. He played the out-of-favor Sheriff who singlehandedly defends the town. I've always felt this should have been remade with a much bigger budget. Now, we're getting the very similarly-themed THE LAST STAND, with Schwarzenegger.

Thanks for pointing out Point Blank is on tomorrow. I just watched Payback today and was curious to see how they compare.

I say forget the movie and check out the Darwyn Cooke graphic novels. He's done three of them so far, each one is EXCELLENT.

I'm not usually one for book to comic adaptations, but holy crap are the Cooke Parkers awesome. A director should use those as film storyboards.

I've browsed through them at Amazon and they do look pretty great. I love the period style art. One day I will pick them up.

Huge Parker fan. Read all of the books (even the solo Grofield ones).

As far as Payback goes, stick with the director's cut that was released on DVD a few years ago. Far better than the theatrical version.

Parker fan here as well (read all the books). There was a loose adaptation of Slayground from the early 80s. It was pretty bad, but recommended for those curious.

I'm setting my expectations very low for this one. The "real" Parker is not an audience-friendly figure capable of supporting a modern-day franchise, which is what they're going to turn him into.

 I don't go in for those big Absolute omnibuses, especially as a double-dip, but I sprung for Parker: Martini Edition. It has portraits of every actor - and actress - who has played Parker in the movies.

Oh, and when I read a Parker novel I always picture William Smith in the role. I think it's because I associate the character with the early 70's.

I watched the director’s cut this weekend and people aren't lying about it having a very different tone and look. It definitely follows the book more closely. Still, removing Parker from the equation, I think I like the theatrical cut better.

Also this weekend I finished reading The Man With The Getaway Face. These novels are really easy to plow through. (There's an interview with Westlake of the Payback Blu Ray and he said he chose Stark as his pseudonym because that was the type of prose he intended to write under that name.)

Agreed on your "not-audience-friendly" point. In fact, that's why I like Parker so much. But, yeah, the rest of the audience won't cotton to such a hardcore professional criminal unless he's watered down or made "audience-friendly." I believe Statham can play him properly, but I doubt that Hackford or the studio can resist the tampering required to make it a suitable franchise.

And, yes, Smith would have made a very interesting choice for the role.

I watched POINT BLANK when it was on TCM last week. I enjoy the film very much although I don't think the character of Walker is quite the way Stark conceived him. Walker seems kind of lost at points, which I think is the way Boorman and the screenwriters wanted him to be portrayed, as a man out of his time, out of his element, making his way through by sheer nerve, instinct, stubbornness. The novel's Parker was much more businesslike. This is what is owed me, this is what I want, this is what I'll accept, if you can't get it for me, tell me who the next one up the chain is and get out of my way and I'll go to him and I won't stop until I get what's mine or you kill me. Something like that. Hard to make a character like that very sympathetic on screen. They're usually the bad guy. But I find that whole process fascinating.

Thanks for that trailer. It looks too similar to PAYBACK and not similar enough to the novel. And I can do without J-Lo.

So yet another adaptation of The Hunter. Yaaaaayyyyy. -rolleyes-

In my happy place, there is an HBO series based on the Parker novels. Each book is the basis for a two-three episode arc. The series starts off with The Man With the Getaway Face, so the series can serve as a direct sequel to whatever version of The Hunter a given viewer prefers.

That's not "The Hunter." The story has clearly been changed quite a bit. I'll see it but I won't get my hopes up. And J-Lo really doesn't need to be in there.

I've read that it's based on Flashfire, not The Hunter.
