The First Omen (2024, D: Stevenson) - prequel

EXCLUSIVE: 20th Century Studios is in development on The First Omen, a prequel to the original 1976 Fox movie The Omen, with Legion and Briarpatch episodic director Arkasha Stevenson making her feature directorial debut.

Stevenson will also handle the rewrite, alongside writing partner Tim Smith. Smith is set to executive produce with Phantom Four producing.

David S. Goyer and Keith Levine are producing for Phantom Four, with Gracie Wheelan overseeing for the production label.

The original 1976 movie, a hit in its day which grossed over $60 million at the domestic box office (unadjusted for inflation) and starred Gregory Peck, Lee Remick and Harvey Stephens, follows an American ambassador who believes his 5-year-old son is the Antichrist.

The pic spawned two sequels, 1978’s Damien: Omen II ($26.5M domestic B.O.) and 1981’s The Final Conflict ($20.5M) as well as 2006 reboot that grossed $120M worldwide and starred Liev Schreiber, Julia Stiles and David Thewlis. There have been other follow-ups on the small screen.

Stevenson and Smith first worked together on the short film Pineapple, which debuted at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival, which Stevenson directed and Smith produced. They later sold the concept as a TV series to AMC, which they both wrote the pilot for. They are currently also working on Beautiful Monsters, an original project set up at Amazon; and both co-executive produced Channel Zero: Butcher’s Block for Syfy, on which Stevenson directed every episode.

They continued their collaboration with Nick Antosca on Brand New Cherry Flavor at Netflix, with Stevenson directing the pilot and Smith a co-producer. Stevenson has also directed episodes of FX’s Legion and USA’s Briarpatch. Prior to entertainment, Stevenson was a photojournalist for the Los Angeles Times, while Smith worked on Duck Butter and Searching as a production supervisor.

Stevenson and Smith are repped by Verve and attorney Melissa Rogal.

The title sounds like an Abbott and Costello routine.

I’m expecting a ton of 20th Century IP to be mined and released on Hulu and Disney+.

The Omen sequels are far better than they have any right being. Underrated horror franchise.

Isn't the first movie a prequel? Since it's about a child and how he ends up on the path to becoming the antichrist?

Is this movie going to be about a toddler on the path to becoming a child on the path to becoming the antichrist?

Maybe the parents realize that the mother is pregnant with the antichrist but they live in 2022 Texas?

I got a hold of the story treatment. In it, Gregory Peck is sitting in a bar telling a friend that he and his wife are thinking of having a baby. Just after he makes this revelation, Satan walks into the bar and murders a bunch of people. Peck's friend says 'that's a bad omen' and the movie ends.

At this point, this franchise is just about a bunch of shitty kids.

Agreed. While the second has its ups and downs (the whole thing with the cave painting is ridiculously silly) The Final Conflict has always been a particular favorite.

Anything after that (the made-for-tv fourth movie, remakes, whatever) is on its own though.

Even the one season tv series wasn't bad for cable.

"The Final Conflict" was actually a great sequel and criminally underrated. A worthy follow-up to "The Omen". But "Damien: Omen II" was ridiculously terrible. I don't know what was worse, the acting or the script. And unwatchable mess for me.

The Omen original trilogy was all I needed, a beginning, a middle, and an end. Didn't need IV, and I don't need this.

I’m definitely aware of this franchise, but truth be told I’m not sure I’ve seen any of the original films. A friend rented the DVD of the remake way back when it first came out and I vaguely remember it. I should really go through and watch at least the original.

😮😮😮 If all you've seen is that shitty remake from 2006, then yes, you really need watch the original. ASAP. It's a classic.

I caved on the 4-pack when VUDU had a sale, but still haven't watched anything beyond the first. I guess I have my marching orders!

I’ve thought about buying the Scream Factory box set before. It’s only like $40 and has all five films.

I'm re-watching the omen now because of this, and all I can say is if they didn't want their son to be the antichrist, they shouldn't have given him such an evil name.

Do we think this prequel will involve Satanists following Gregory Peck and Lee Remick's characters around Europe, or the conception and birth of Damien, or another antichrist character?

Yeah I was just thinking... isn't the prequel to The Omen basically just Rosemary's Baby?

Another prequel/sequel/reboot/remake of an old horror IP. Yay? :boring:

Well, lemme watch the trailer to see if it changes my mind.
