Re: Rebuild of Evangelion

It's postponed now now due to COVID 19. Which is not surprising, but at the same time it kind of feels like this is never going to come out, similar to the Fox New Mutants movie.

Japanese record-breaking anime blockbuster film EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME to launch exclusively on Amazon Prime Video on August 13th

The latest film in the legendary Japanese anime franchise will premiere in over 240 countries and territories excluding Japan

All three previous movies in the franchise will also become available exclusively on Prime Video excluding rental and purchase

London, UK, July 1st 2021 – Amazon Prime Video today announced the exclusive global premiere (outside of Japan) of the highly anticipated Japanese anime blockbuster EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME on August 13th. EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME is the fourth and final chapter of the new theatrical edition of Evangelion. The anime film – which is the highest-grossing in all movies by chief director Hideaki Anno and most-watched movie in Japanese theatres in 2021- is from directors Kazuya Tsurumaki, Katsuichi Nakayama and Mahiro Maeda as well as legendary creator, screenwriter and chief director Hideaki Anno (Shin Godzilla). To celebrate the finale of the franchise, Prime Video will also release the three previous movies, EVANGELION:1.11 YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE., EVANGELION:2.22 YOU CAN (NOT) ADVANCE., EVANGELION:3.33 YOU CAN (NOT) REDO. to fans in more than 240 countries and territories.

The blockbuster franchise is a Japanese anime pop culture phenomenon based on the story of Evangelion, an artificial human and multipurpose humanoid weapon, and the Angels, an unknown life-form which takes place after the Earth has been shattered by a cataclysmic event. The film features all original voice actors including Megumi Ogata, Megumi Hayashibara, Yûko Miyamura and uses the latest imaging technology to showcase the personalities and relationships of its unique characters as they fight for survival. It will be dubbed in 10 languages including English, French, German, Portuguese, Spanish and Italian, and offer subtitles in 28 languages.

Since the TV series first aired in 1995, the Evangelion franchise has had a significant impact on Japanese pop culture and has elevated the anime genre worldwide. The legendary anime franchise was then reborn as a new movie series Evangelion: New Theatrical Edition in 2007 and this fourth and final movie released across theatres in Japan in March has gone on to break records, both for Hideaki Anno’s films and also as Japan’s most-watched theatrical movie of the year. EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME on Amazon Prime Video will be the latest version of the film which includes revised scenes and is releasing across theatres now in Japan.

“The EVANGELION films have been thrilling fans for years and we know that there is a huge appetite around the world for the finale” said Brad Beale, Vice President, Worldwide Content Licensing Prime Video. “I’m excited for Prime members worldwide to finally have the opportunity to watch the anime masterpiece EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME, as well as the three previous films.”

I’d like to thank every Eva fan in the world for your continued support.” said Hideaki Anno, Creator, Screenwriter and Chief Director. “We were looking for the best way to offer the movie to fans overseas as early as possible in a challenging situation with movie theatres during COVID-19, and are happy to have found Prime Video as a partner to stream it globally. We highly recommend watching it on a big TV screen for the best viewing experience.”

Re: Rebuild of Evangelion

I haven't watched any of these films because I was waiting for them to complete. None of the previous 3 are on a streaming service at the moment, but it looks like Prime Video is getting them as well:

To celebrate the finale of the franchise, Prime Video will also release the three previous entries, Evangelion: 1.11 You Are (Not) Alone, Evangelion: 2.22 You Can (Not) Advance and Evangelion: 3.33 You Can (Not) Redo.

I haven't watched the films because I haven't watched the series, yet I have the Platinum DVD set and the first three rebuilds on Blu-ray.

I should really watch this.

Re: Rebuild of Evangelion

Neon Genesis Evangelion was the thing that brought me to this site in the first place. I wasn't really interested in spending $200+ on the DVD set, but at the time there was a site where you could sign up for free trials to things to get points. Then you could trade those points in on DVDs. I believe it was Twikoff who put together a spreadsheet to keep track of it all, canceling before any billing. Ultimately, I got the set, as well as some other ones for free, aside from time signing up and canceling trials. Stuck around here after that.

I haven't seen any of the movies yet, though. Now that they are all completed, I'll see if I can hunt them down somewhere.

The original TV series is on Netflix in HD, as well as the feature film The End of Evangelion, which was a new ending for the TV series. Netflix has a new English dub compared to the DVDs though, if you were going to watch in English:
https://dubbing.fandom.com/wiki/Neon_Genesis_Evangelion

Keep in mind that the Rebuild of Evangelion films are a completely new retelling, so one doesn't have to have seen the TV show to watch the Rebuild films.

Re: Rebuild of Evangelion

Netflix round-up:
- Neon Genesis Evangelion https://www.netflix.com/title/81033445
- Evangelion: Death (True)² https://www.netflix.com/title/81033473
- The End of Evangelion https://www.netflix.com/title/60024788
GKIDS will be releasing these on Blu-ray. Very little info is known. Distributor is unknown as well (it could be Shout! Factory).

Rebuild of Evangelion films never streamed in the U.S. I don't think it was ever made available for purchase digitally either. Funimation's BDs and DVDs (first three films) are having stocking issues (either OOP or OOS). It's possible they have lost the license. GKIDS is the likely candidate to get home video rights (and maybe even theatrical rights) for all films if available.

Re: Rebuild of Evangelion

Evangelion: Death (True)² is the half of Death & Rebirth that's the recap of the show, with mainly repurposed show footage, right? Is there really a point to watching it before End of Evangelion if one has jus finished (re)watching the full show?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neon_G...birth#Versions

I always considered Death & Rebirth a stopgap measure since they couldn't finish all the new footage in time. Originally, the "Rebirth" part was supposed to be the entirety of the new ending, but only ended up being part of it, with End of Evangelion being the originally intended full new ending:

It's personal preference whether to watch Evangelion: Death (True)² or not. IMO, going from the TV series to the End of Evangelion will work too. The completist mentality is to watch all of them?

Re: Rebuild of Evangelion

So is this the place to discuss/review the films? There hasn't really been a review in this thread since Nausicaa's post about the first two movies in 2012.

I watched all 4 films for the first time on Amazon Prime this past week. I didn't get around to rewatching the original show and End of Evangelion before watching these, so this is from the point of view of someone who last saw those works over a decade ago.

Spoiler:
Overall I enjoyed the film series, although it's not without its flaws. The first film played like an abridged form of the first part of the show, as did most of the 2nd film, aside from the introduction of the new pilot, and the last part of the film, obviously. Relationships aren't given a lot of time to develop, especially Asuka's, but if one has seen the TV show one fills in the dimensions not shown in this series. It seemed quite bold to end that film on the apparent Third Impact. However, the third film opening with a 14 year time jump is even more jarring. From this point on, the movies stop making much literal sense. Not much is ever explained, and one can really only understand or glean broad strokes. At least with the first two films one had the TV series to fall back on, but since the story diverges in three, there's nothing to fall back on, so a lot of the technical aspects of what the hell is going on. There's just flying ships now, ok. And almost all of NERV has left and become WILLE, while NERV only apparently has Gendo and Fuyutsuki. I don't know how they keep the lights on, let lone build new ships and Evas. Lots of concepts come fast and furious, only to largely be discarded once their narrative purpose has been served. There's some sense that certain words or phrases are thrown about just to lend the series a sense of mystery, without much regard for coherence.

The third film is the most problematic. It's the shortest, and not a lot happens, and characters and the story is underdeveloped. Shinji goes rather quickly from the shock of realizing he created a near third impact to agreeing to pilot an Eva again, to then being so gung ho about the mission as to ignore Kaworu's concerns. Shinji's friendship with Kaworu seems rush, and his relationship with the new "Rei" doesn't seem to go much of anywhere. And then the story seems to end similar to how the second film ended, with another "near" third impact.

The fourth film is better, although at 2 1/2 hours long, it seems to be picking up the slack left by the third film. Thematically, this is the most interesting and resonate, as it expands and reconsiders aspects of the original show. Narratively, a lot of this is still a mess, although the interlude in the refugee village is nice and straightforward. The movie actually takes time to slow and let Shinji process his grief and reconnect with humanity. It also marginally explains a bit more about what happened during the 14 year gap. I still don't understand where Shinji was for those 14 years, the third movie opener suggests maybe Eva 01 was in space that whole time? And I don't know what the hell Kaji was supposed to have done to have stopped the Third Impact, I thought Kaworu had stopped it by spearing Eva 01 at the end of the second movie. The end battle with the ships and flurry of Evas doesn't make much sense except for the thematic sense of one last desperate attempt to stop the Human Instrumentality from occurring.

And, of course, the final battle has to come down to Shinji and Gendo, and quickly becomes metaphysical. A lot of meta references here, with them fighting through various locations now presented as "sets." I actually thought the initial two Eva fight in the cityscape seemed off, the Evas were too light on their feet and the buildings were getting pushed around like miniatures, and then Shinji flies into the edge of the set, so it was actually intentional. The revelation of Gendo's motivations, that he was essentially the same as Shinji when he was young, and the loss of Yui drove him to focus on returning to her by any means, including destroying humanity. There's also the implication of a "cycle," that this isn't just an alternate version of the tale, but maybe one that came after the first. The ultimate ending is more hopeful than the original series and End of Evangelion, restoring Earth and most of humanity. There is the question of whether Shinji and Mari actual escape the "Anti Universe" though, since the Evas all vanish after Mari arrives in it to rescue Shinji. The scene of Shinji sitting alone on the shore slowly reverts though the various levels of animation, suggesting that Shinji is dissolving or vanishing, up until Mari arrives to jolt him back. The final scene suggest Shinji and Mari return to the real world, although there's also the possibility they're in a world of their own creation at the end.

Mari herself was a bit of a puzzle for me. She just shows up and is there. She literally has one scene with Shinji quickly in the 2nd film, then doesn't see him again until the 4th film briefly before the battle. And yet, she's the person that end up with Shinji. I looked her character up after watching the last film, and I guess she appeared in the manga in a slightly different form, but it's unclear if this was before or after she appears in the film. It seems like she was an original creation for this film series.

Re: Rebuild of Evangelion

LOL I started this thread in 2009. My daughter was 3

I just started watching the original Eva with her on Netflix this week. She's 16 now.

Hoping she doesn't catch on with the Shinji scene in the hospital. She's kind of oblivious normally and that stuff goes over her head.

GKIDS Acquires North American Rights to “EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME”

Finale to the Historic “NEON GENESIS EVANGELION” Property to be Released in Theaters in Late 2022

Followed by Home Entertainment Release

GKIDS, the acclaimed producer and distributor of animation for adult and family audiences, announced it has acquired North American theatrical, home video, and EST rights to the capstone finale film EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME. The highly anticipated fourth and final installment of the new theatrical “Rebuild” editions of the EVANGELION franchise, EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME was released in Japanese theaters in 2021, where it was a critical and box office success, becoming the highest-grossing film of the year with ¥10.28 billion (~$85 million) in local box office. GKIDS plans to release the anticipated film in theaters in late 2022, marking the first time EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME will be available in theaters in North America since its domestic release. A release on home entertainment platforms will follow, with dates to be announced.

Created by Hideaki Anno, the NEON GENESIS EVANGELION franchise is considered one of the most influential animated sagas of all time. Since the 1995 premiere of the original television series, the story of teenager Shinji Ikari has remained one of the most iconic titles in animation history, and a global pop culture phenomenon.

Following the conclusion of the beloved 1995 television show, the legendary project received new life as the EVANGELION movie series. The theatrical film series began with EVANGELION:1.11 YOU ARE (NOT) ALONE (2007), followed by EVANGELION:2.22 YOU CAN (NOT) ADVANCE (2009), EVANGELION:3.33 YOU CAN (NOT) REDO (2012), and culminating in the finale EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME.

Last year, GKIDS released the original twenty-six episode television series, NEON GENESIS EVANGELION, as well as the films EVANGELIONEATH (TRUE)2 and THE END OF EVANGELION on Blu-ray and digital download-to-own for the first time in North America. GKIDS also handles North American distribution for creator Hideaki Anno’s prior series, NADIA: The Secret of Blue Water.

“GKIDS is honored to represent the epic conclusion of a story over 25 years in the making,” said GKIDS President David Jesteadt. “Like with so many others, EVANGELION was critical in expanding my idea of what animation could be, and I look forward to joining other fans in theaters to celebrate the end of the saga with EVANGELION:3.0+1.01 THRICE UPON A TIME.”
