While I watch anime from time to time, I don't follow the industry/genre that much. What was the big news with the creator of this series? Was he busted for some sicko stuff? I saw the trailer and the comments on youtube and while many loved the series they didn't want to give the creator any more time and money. Just wondering.

I love Kenshin but will have a hard time watching this. Heck, even Viz stopped translating his sequel manga shortly after this came out.
What happened within that time that changed everyone's mind? In November 2017, Watsuki was arrested on charges of possession of child pornography DVDs. He pleaded guilty and confessed to being a pedophile attracted to girls in elementary and middle school.
Such a heinous crime somehow resulted in hardly any consequences. His legal punishment was a fine of only 200,000 yen, equivalent to $1,780. Watsuki was suspended for only half a year before he was back to work at Shueisha, the publishing company behind the Shonen Jump line of magazines, and writing The Hokkaido Arc as usual. That he got off so lightly for a crime that involved the exploitation and abuse of real children when the Japanese legal system punishes nonviolent drug crimes much more severely sparked outrage.

The staff for the new television anime project based on Nobuhiro Watsuki's Rurouni Kenshin manga debuted its fourth promotional video on Saturday. The video announces and previews the "Kissaki" (Sword Tip) ending theme song that singer-songwriter Reol created for the anime, and it also announces the anime's July 6 premiere.
The anime will premiere on Fuji TV's Noitamina programming block and other venues on July 6 at 25:55 (effectively, July 7 at 12:55 a.m. or July 6 at 11:55 a.m. EDT).
In addition, the staff will hold screening events in Japan, the United States, France, Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia, and South Korea. Japan will have two screenings on June 18 at Tokyo's United Cinema Aqua City Odaiba with cast members Sōma Saitō, Rie Takahashi, Makoto Koichi, and Taku Yashiro,.
