Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

Went to a BN Brick and Mortar today while out doing some errands and I picked up a few things:

Shaft 4K

Menace to Society 4K

Crash

Came out to $77.14. Sales tax at this B&M is brutal 10.25%.

Not sure if I will get anything else. The selection at this BM is small, so I don't think I will be going back in there and that sales tax sucks.

Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

Since I was at the mall and had a $6 GC I went to a BN and bought Shaft and Mr. Klein. Came out to $36 after tax. Not sure I have any other must haves/wants. So that may be it for me.

Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

Was glad to see the July prebooks were valid.

Got Raging Bull, Devil in a Blue Dress, and Virgin Suicides as prebooks; also got Shaft, A Hard Day's Night, Double Indemnity and For All Mankind. All in 4K.

Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

Just picked up Flight of the Phoenix and The Tales of Hoffman blu-rays at a brick and mortar B&N. Would have used Amazon Prime and while tax was the same, FotP was $2 more... so no sale. And no wait for delivery.

FotP is a long time favorite of mine. Tales was a blind buy and while I'm not a big musical aficionado, I do have a soft spot for many classic musicals. I've read about Tales for ages, so even if it doesn't meet expectations, it'll be another classic for my collection..

Also, we just got a new 58" 4K Samsung. Any recommendations for reasonably-priced, upscaling 4K player?

My advice is to get a decent UHD player all which should upscale BD to 4K -- something like the Sony 800MkII or Panasonic 420
There aren;t a lot of new BD players anyway (new in box, but most are several year old design) so why not take the option of being able to do real 4K too. Unless tyou;re buying used or looking
for a region free version, the UHS players aren't even that much more expensive.

Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

Picked up the 4K UHDs of Le Cercle Rouge (1970) & Shaft (1971) and the BD of Okja (2017).

The closest B&M to where I live were out of a few of the titles I was after.

I bought a lot during the last sale, so there isn't much left that I want to pick-up but can wait until Drive My Car (2021) comes out later this month.

Why not the 4K of Okja?

I think I want Virgin Suicides, but holy cow, just thinking about that movie is starting to make me depressed.

Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

I've picked up/pre-ordered so far:
Citizen Kane 4k
Shaft 4k
Pink Flamingos bd
Okja 4k
Menace II Society 4k
Piano 4k
Uncut Gems 4k
Virgin Suicides 4k
Smooth Talk bd
Crash bd
Mississippi Masala bd
Double Indemnity 4k
Devil In A Blue Dress 4k (to be shipped)
Raging Bull 4k (to be shipped)
Worst Person in the World bd

You can also purchase movies online to pick up in store. I ordered Crash, Mississippi Masala, and Double Indemnity along with Devil and Raging Bull to be shipped later for free and the three in-stock items were ready to be picked up in less than half an hour. If you have PayPal credit, this is a way to hit the hundred dollar threshold for 6 months no interest by getting a mix of released and forthcoming titles that you know you are going to purchase anyway. I don't feel too bad as I have skipped the past few Criterion sales for the most part.

I honestly forgot that there was also a 4K release

I'll probably exchange it at a different store that I'll be near on Friday, assuming they'll still have it in-stock.

What you describe is exactly what I'm looking for. Although we do have another 4K TV and a few 4K discs from multi-disc combos, I haven't really checked into any UHD players. Thanks for the recommendations.

What's funny is that you still get that BD included with the 4K of Okja.

I was thinking about that yesterday when I was at a different B&N exchanging discs.

Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

This morning I purchased five more online to pick up in store and they had them ready to pick up in less than fifteen minutes. I just have to go up there and get them. One of them is The Red Shoes 4k. I'll update my list when I actually get them in hand and home. Raging Bull 4k is on the way and Devil In A Blue Dress 4k will come soon.

Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

I was thinking about getting Devil in a Blue Dress. But it’s on HBO Max right now and I haven’t seen it in over 20 years. Probably around 1996 or 1997. I’m going to watch it first on HBO Max and then see if it’s worth owning. I don’t recall anything about it.

Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

It's very good. The only bad part of it is it didn't take off at the box office and become a recurring vehicle for Denzel Washington as Easy Rawlins. Walter Mosley's novels are superb.

Re: B&N - 50% off Criterion Sale

I ordered one more title and that will be it for me this go around. Got Videodrome. I actually have the Arrow Region B version, but read that it's missing some of the bonus features from the Criterion.

I'm going to pass on Devil in a Blue Dress for now. I don't need it that bad and will wait for a future sale.
