Just an aside...

Although probably not the thread for this tangential comment, inspired by looking into the inspiration for Glen Cook's "Garrett PI" books, I picked up the first of John D MacDonald's "Travis McGee" books for my dad. The foreward was by Lee Child and my dad, a "Jack Reacher" fan, reported back very favourably. So much so that he is imminently to receive volumes two and three as part of his birthday present (Shh!).

The hardboiled thread regulars know their crime fiction far better than I but one or two may be able to say whether the 20+ strong/two decade long McGee sequence of books is even more worthy of your time and attention than, say, the Reacher series.

I've recently finished McDonald's standalone mid-1960s book "The Last One Left" and it was excellent - I can imagine it pretty much unchanged as a film such is the craft that JDM displayed in its creation.

I really like the Percy Jackson series. I think they're almost as good as the Harry Potter series. Unlike Harry Potter, where most of the action is at or near the end of the book, there is almost nonstop action throughout the books.

Just finished reading

It's long, but can't recommend it enough.
Spoiler:
I can't remember the last time a work of fiction made me tear up several times throughout the book. These men went through absolute hell up in the arctic and I found it quite emotional reading about what they had to do to try to survive.

Anyway, next up

So far (about halfway through I think) I liked the first one better. It had some awkward writing in places (it kind of reminded me of Twilight for guys in a way), but it was never boring, whereas I'm really tired of the setting of this one.

I enjoyed it quite a bit. It's got a little bit of that Hunger Games vibe. It's a YA series.. but the writing is done well enough and the story is interesting. I'd recommend it if you can find a deal on it. I've been borrowing the books from my library to my Kindle, so that made it easier to read. I'm next on the waiting list for book 3 in the trilogy. Then there is a prequel book that I'm going to read after that.

Now on the fab Kate Griffin's "Stray Souls".

For fans of British urban fantasy, she really is a must.

Re: What are you reading? (January 2014)

I was at a book club meeting and this book came up and when the person in front of me grimaced at her recollection of reading it I knew I wanted to read it. Awesome and life-changing so far, highlighting like crazy.
