2021 Reading Wrap Up
I always enjoy seeing what everyone here is reading so I thought it would be cool to have a thread to sum up the year of reading. Here are a few categories to kick things off, but feel free to add more.
Number of books read - 78
Favorite book read this year - Lonesome Dove, I cant believe it took me this long to read this classic, one of my favorite books of all time. I also read the sequel, Streets of Laredo, which I also really enjoyed, not as good as LD, but I plan on reading the other two books in the series next year.
Favorite book released in 2021 - Tears of Amber, this was an Amazon First Read that I grabbed as a throw away, but this ended up being my favorite new release of the year.
Least favorite book read this year - A Confederacy of Dunces, if it weren't for my obsession with finishing books, I would have bailed hard on this one. I have been sprinkling in some Pulitzer Prize winners to vary up my reading tendencies, but I would love to have the time back I spent reading this.
Other recommended books - If you have Amazon Prime, I highly recommend grabbing one of their Amazon First Reads each month. I think I enjoyed every one I read this year, and it was a great way to expose me to authors I might not have found. Some other faves that I read this year: Chasing the Boogeyman, The Man Who Died Twice, The Lincoln Highway, Heart Shape Box, Sapiens

Favorite book read this year - Oddly enough, my favorite book was also written by Larry McMurtry...but in my case, it was The Last Picture Show. And I, too, plan to read more McMurtry next year.
Favorite book released in 2021 - n/a (I didn't read anything that was newly-published this year.)
Least favorite book read this year - Universal Harvester by John Darnielle. The novel started out with an intriguing premise, and then seemed to thwart everything interesting about the plot. It was mercifully short, which is the only reason that I made it through the book at all.
Other recommended books - The Silence of the Lambs, by Thomas Harris; The Firm, by John Grisham; Intensity, by Dean Koontz

Favorite book read this year - The Only Good Indians by Stephen Graham Jones. This guy kills me everytime.
Favorite book released in 2021 - Tie between The Last House On Needless Street by Catriona Ward and Come With Me by Ronald Malfi. Both books knocked me out hard.
Least favorite book read this year - Ready Player Two by Ernest Cline. Highly anticipated and just a dull rehash of Ready Player One, albeit with bigger stakes.
Other recommended books - My Heart Is a Chainsaw by Stephen Graham Jones, Final Girl Support Group by Grady Hendrix, Billy Summers by Stephen King, Whisper Down The Lane by Clay Mcleod Chapman, Anxious People by Fredrik Backman

I think I've kept up with posting books read and mini-reviews in the 2021 reading thread here at DVDTalk.
Number of books read - 46
Number of pages read - 18,798
Favorite books read this year - I hate picking just one (and don't feel like one was a clear favorite over others). Looking at Goodreads, my 5 star ratings were for: The Ten Thousand Doors of January (Alix Harrow), The Daevabad Trilogy (SA Chakraborty), Paperbacks from Hell (Grady Hendrix), The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue (VE Schwab), Rampart Trilogy (MR Carey), The Vanished Birds (Simon Jimenez)
Favorite book released in 2021 - I'm usually a year or so behind reading books from when they're released, and of the 46 books I read only 3 were published in 2021. So I guess it has to be The Fall of Koli (last book in MR Carey's Rampart trilogy).
Least favorite books read this year - I don't rate many books low ... partly because I like to think I'm selective with my reading, and books are too much of a time investment for me not to bail on something I really don't like. I'll second Ready Player Two as a disappointment. As was Hummingbird Salamander by Jeff VanderMeer.
