Maybe that's it. I met Rob at NYCC last year and he was pretty cool. Also, I hear that the reason he keeps getting work is mostly due to all the friends he has in the industry. Although with him planning to quit superhero comics next year (aside from his own creator-owned properties), you guys may finally be getting your wishes granted.

I bet both Rob Liefeld and Todd McFarlane at conventions in the 90s, at the height of their fame when they would most likely be the biggest jerk they could be, and Liefeld seemed fine, just kind of a dumb bonehead. McFarlane however was an abject prick.

Yeah, I've met both of them back in the '90s as well; Liefeld seemed decent, down to earth, etc. McFarlane, however, was a flat out asshole.

That's gotta be it. He's friends with everybody in the industry and he can churn work out to meet deadlines. The guys who pay the bills probably don't give a shit as long as it ships on time.

This is funny because Youngblood was the first Image comic to come out and yet took forever to come out with subsequent issues. His Heroes Reborn stuff was late and basically taken away from his studio and given to Lee. He was ousted from his founding position at Image. And yet somehow through the years he's become a guy with friends in the industry, and a prolific artist because he's somehow able to cut more corners on his art.

He obviously took over the cutting corners crown from Vince Colletta. I think I posted something about him several pages back. He was terrible but looking back now, his work doesn't even come close to being as bad as Liefield.

Hmmm.... maybe it wasn't Capullo I am thinking of. Did his run end really early, like 5 or 6 issues in? Maybe it was his replacement I am thinking of. He kept doing these shots of someone's jaw, cheek, and eye that made no sense whatsoever.

Capullo was the permanent replacement for Liefeld after a few fill-in by other artists. I think his last issue was #25

I'm not sure how many artists they went through afterwards until they settled on Daniel.

Edit: perhaps you are thinking of Mark Pacella who was doing his best to copy Liefeld's style and he was there for 5 or so issues before Capullo.

McFarlane had a signing in Houston sometime in 1991 or 92. I knew he'd have a limit on how many items he'd sign, so I brought my girlfriend at the time with me. Sure enough when the show starts, they announce he's only signing two items per person. I had a Spider-Man 298, 299 and 300, two Spider-Man 1 in plastic, and a Spawn 1.

When it was my time to sign, I got my girlfriend to get Spider-Man 300 and a copy of Spider-Man #1 signed. McFarlane looks at my then 19-year-old girlfriend who is OBVIOUSLY there to do me a solid and tells her with a certain level of distain "You know I didn't make the bag right?" refering to the Spider-Man #1 in plastic. She looked at me and I just shook my head. I put down a Spawn #1 and Spider-Man 299 in front of him. As he was about to sign Spawn, I quickly replaced it with my other copy of Spider-Man #1 and said "Wait, the Spider-Man will always be worth more than the Spawn." I thought he guy was going to come at me. He then signs it and draws Spawn's head on it, too.

The funny thing is I sold the Spawn head Spider-Man #1 for four times what I eventually sold the Spider-Man #1 with just his name.

McFarlane was the first guy I ever encountered who charged for autographs. I've been going to comic conventions since 1984, and although it's a lot more common practice now, it wasn't until 91 or 92 that I encountered somebody charging and it was him.

On it's face that practice sucks, but since so many are getting turned around and sold on eBay, it makes sense.

I completely agree with you. The funny thing is that when I was going around getting autographs in the late 80s and early 90s, I had artists sign the book to me since I had no intention (and no real way) to sell the books.

Most of my nicer autographs are signed "To Erik." John Romita Jr., who obviously signs his books in a box with "JR JR" one on top of the other, seemed tickeled when I asked him to personalize the two books he signed to me. He wrote out his full name on both. He was a super nice guy.

I always got things personalized. I remember Mike Allred sat down and signed every single comic I brought with me (I brought all of the Grafik Musik and Graphique Musique and just about every Madman issue that had been published up to that point) because I brought them all not knowing which one I would get signed. He said to give him the whole stack and he wrote/drew something different in each issue.

This one has everything. No visible feet. Only 1 fully visible hand. Hawkman and Deathstroke aren't even looking at each other. Im sure the sword is crooked, and hes not really holding it, if we could see his hand.

That one's actually kinda tolerable. As you noted, he hid the feet and the sword hand, which is good if he can't get them right to begin with. The cover also has the added bonus of not having to tell a sequential story.

And his other foot is tucked up completely unnaturally, I'm assuming just so he wouldn't have to draw another one.

Also, is he kicking Hawkman or dancing with him?

Hawkman himself doesn't look too bad. Looks like he drew Hawkman and then just superimposed the other guy over him. Perfect.

Wait, so the hawk symbol is supposed to be in the red circle on his chest? Was Liefeld just too lazy to put it in or something in that Deathstroke pic?

And is it just me, or is that hawkman costume very different in the second pic, with Wolverine-style boots and a single large blade on only one arm?
