Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

I'm not sure there is any rhyme or reason, but I am having fun going after stuff. I think it's just where they didn't forecast properly. Most of the DC stuff was New 52 and at this point that is 10 years ago. They are just starting to get some rebirth stuff in. There's a fair bit of Marvel stuff that must not have sold well at all. Skrull Kill Krew could not have been that popular, but now that I see that it was Grant Morrison, I may have to pick it up...Ollie's!!!!!!

The supersized vibranium books, Marvel just made too many of them. I love them, but not at $200. $40 not even a second thought.

Or maybe digital is just eating away into print.

Book publishers regularly remainder their unsold stock. They could destroy it, but they can sell it off to wholesalers in bulk and generate a little money from it.

Marvel and DC both pump out a ton of capeshit in TPBs, and most of it is time-sensitive, so if they don't sell it within a year or so, it's just taking up space in a warehouse. Very little of their backstock is evergreen, like Watchmen or TDKR, and it's just going to gather dust once the initial sales are over. Ollies probably buys this stuff by the pallet or truckload and pays the freight, so Marvel and DC get to make a little bit of money off of this stuff.

It's not that unusual at all.

Look at the record industry. Going back to the 70's they'd sell, "Cutouts," to different distrubutors for a dollar or two and then you could buy them for $2.99. Different record companies did different things to make sure they couldn't be returned as regular product - cut a corner of the cover off, or cut a groove into the cover. I bought a few albums that way.

Other industries sell overstock in similar fashions. That's how stores like Pic 'N' Save (now Big/Lots) got a lot of their inventory.

Big/Lots sold millions of DVDs that way starting in the early 2000's, too. Warners would cut a big gash into the bar code, but at $3 it was easy to overlook that!

Better to sell the overstock for something than pay to have it destroyed. The overstock gets sold fairly quickly that way, and those items can continue to sell at regular price through the regular retailers after that.

You can tell they just opened because they actually took the time to sort the comics. Wait a month.

Nice. I'm SO jealous.

There are a lot of titles I'd buy at prices like theirs, but not at the prices online or in this area. Sadly, the only local comic store that really had deals on trades permanently closed up shop 4 months ago. Even then it was just a table of books at 50% off list price (stuff that they hadn't been able to sell otherwise and had been sitting on the shelves for 18 months or more). But I found a few cool things (JLA Deluxe Claremont/Byrne, Power Man & Iron Fist Epic Collection, Thor by Jurgens and Romita Jr, etc).

That's a great haul, though. At least someone's getting some good deals.

that sucks. I figured a new store would have some new stuff and I was right! Very heavy DC though, hardly any Marvel

Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

Eric F. drive up the road to Woostah. They had more than they had a few weeks ago. Also, weighted towards DC at Woostah. The Captain America and Black Panther items shown in what I bought are note card sets with silver age and bronze age cap and black panther covers. I'm a sucker for vintage marvel stationary. They were in the children's section. $4.99, cheapest I've seen the cap version is about $20 with shipping on Amazon.

They also had the big Will Eisner book by Paul Levitz, which I left behind and now want to go back and get. I think buried under the rubble was a couple of unwrapped court of owls and a flash rebirth deluxe edition, thunder agents (don't remember which) and wonder woman earth one that everyone has been spotting. Also, still had several volumes of Justice League Silver Age volume 2.

No Kirby Super Powers sadly, and no batgirl first 50 years, Green Arrow 75 years or Batman Golden Age.

Seems like rebirth trades are showing up.

I was in Worcester on Mon. I was thinking about stopping in Ollie's but Covid is on the rise in Worcester right now I decided against it. Not worth it for a few comics.

I hear you. Good luck with Woonsocket. I've always had good luck with Plymouth, but it is so far. I don't think I've been there since the fall.

Most places are bad right now, I'll wait it out. Plymouth is way too far for me, the Worcester store is only 30mins or so away.

Found this today….$24.99. While it was still 75% off, I wonder if the days of $14.99 or $19.99 for an Omni are over at Ollie’s?

Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

pretty nice find.
bleeding cool ran a story in June of 2020 about Marvel liquidating some omnis to comic shops. Some of these showed up at Ollie's. I'm wondering if more will.

I highlighted what I think has been spotted over the last year or so at Ollie's. I could be wrong on some of the artbooks and I can't remeber if muppets was at Ollie's. Maybe someone found Squadron Supreme or maybe that was just a hardcover or trade.

I've gotten a number of them there. They are usually $12.99, $14.99, or $19.99 (which I thought was insanely cheap). This was the first I’d seen at $24.99

The prices definitely went up, I got other Omnibuses and they were $19.99 previously the Guardians I grabbed today was $39.99. Still a steal, but not like they were. The Spidey book was $16.99, Deadpool Minibus $24.99, and the smaller Deadpool book $9.99

when you picked up the batgirl 50 years celebration, how much was it? Maybe the higher prices are only on Marvel titles. I suspect it's whatever they negotiate the liquidation price at plus whatever they need for a profit percentage.

Re: Ollie's Bargain Outlet

The Marvel books have always been priced higher at Ollie's than the DC books. Some of that reflects Marvel's higher list prices on trades but it seems like Ollie's discounts the DC books more aggressively.
