Batman '89 and Superman '78 getting comic book series continuing their stories

I've hardly ventured to this side of the forum before but it feels like the best place to put this news.
https://io9.gizmodo.com/batman-89-an...c-b-1846281208
The worlds of two of the most beloved DC Comics adaptations are making their way back to the comics themselves—not as adaptations, but new stories set in the worlds of Tim Burton and Richard Donner.

Today DC Comics revealed that the 1989 Batman movie and 1978's Superman: The Movie will receive new, ongoing digital-first comic series set in their respective cinematic worlds. Superman ‘78 will be written by Rob Venditti and feature art from Wilfredo Torres, and is set at a time when Christopher Reeves’ iconic take on the Man of Steel has only just become known to the public, balancing his burgeoning romance with an unsuspecting Lois Lane with saving the world with dazzling feats.
Batman ‘89, meanwhile features a very interesting creative team. Sam Hamm, who co-wrote the scripts for Batman and Batman Returns (spinning that into actual comics-writing experience with 1989's Batman: Blind Justice with artist Denys Cowan), will pen the series. On art is comics superstar Joe Quinones, who revealed his plans for a rejected Batman ‘89 comics continuation back in 2016, which would’ve built off of the world of the original Tim Burton movie to introduce cinematic takes on the likes of Batgirl, Harley Quinn, and Poison Ivy in the gothic Burton style.

It's supposed to be a digital series followed by hardcover editions being released in the fall. I'll wait for reviews but I'll be very interested in Batman Hardcover book and its being written by one of the movie's writers Sam Hamm.

So Superman is basically between Superman 1 and 2, which makes sense because you don't really want to touch anything in the 3, 4, or Returns eras.

I'm more of a Batman fan so I'm pretty excited by this news.

Agreed, I'm super hyped for Batman '89. They even got the artist who originally pitched it 5 years ago!

I love this idea, I'm a little surprised nothing was done with it earlier. These were the Superman and Batman movies of my youth, and their looks are what created my impression of these characters for years to come (after the SuperFriends cartoons).

Oh dude! I hade that action figure! The Bruce Wayne one in the all black. You could snap on armor pieces to make him Batman.

I'll add that I just introduced my kids to the original Superman movie (we will probably only do the first two). I thought it would be too slow for them, and the real estate scheme is still as goofy as ever, but they loved it. They'll love the comics too (once they come to the DC Universe service).

Definitely interested in the Batman ‘89 book. Not sure about some of those character designs though. The Gordon in particular doesn’t look like the Pat Hingle version of the character from the movies.

Alfred looks good. Batman/Bruce look pretty good- I like the seeming homage to that toy (I can’t imagine where else they pulled that design from).

The villains are a mixed bag. I don’t particularly care about Joker thugs when the Joker is dead in this universe. Just introduce actual villains and do them inspired by the Burton films.

Christmas gift back around 90 or 91. I 'm still hoping to see a Superman 55' comic based on the George Reeves tv show.

Re: Batman '89 and Superman '78 getting comic book series continuing their stories

Hoping eventually that we’ll see the Billy Dee Williams of Harvey Dent become Two Face. Also more of Catwoman to pick up where Batman Returns ended would be cool.

There’s definitely some potential for some good stories to be told in that universe. Kind of surprised that it’s taken this long to happen.

I’m not as interested in Superman ‘78, but I’ll probably still check that one out too. I like the artwork for it slightly more than the Batman ‘89 art.

People where hoping to see that back when Batman 66 came out but it seems that the George Reeves state refused. That's there has been 0 products based on the George Reeve Superman. We are more likely to see Flash 1990 come along thanks to these projects.

Unless reviews are horrible will be picking up the hardcover of Batman 89. May or may not get Superman.

I wasn't a big Bat-toy collector, but I think I had that one and enjoyed the costume aspect of it.

Unless they can't get the rights to Jack Nicholson's image, I can totally see them finding a way to bring back the Joker. Haven't other Bat-comics brought him back with the Lazarus pit thingy?

I love the original Superman so much. My friends tease me because I'd rather rewatch Superman 78 than watch any of the MCU movies (I'm about halfway through those).

I know people are going to say I'm just ragging on the newer movies, but Superman 78's Clark growing up scene still gets me (and it's not just the score). The hokey running animation aside, I love Pa Kent just shaking his head when Clark was showing off, but didn't stop and lecture him for an hour. My son was like "why didn't he save his dad" and I told him, there are some things even Superman can't do. It's hard to believe the modern interpretation of that was so bad.

Snyder also wanted Batman to sleep with Lois Lane before executives above nixed it. His depiction of DC characters is almost completely out of left field.

Wait, what? Is there an article on this, or you just know because you're the Phantom Stranger (I know you have sources)?

Will the Batman '89 series also include Forever and B&R? They're not Burton and they have different actors for Batman, but they were always intended to be part of the same series, iirc.

It was circulating for a couple years already but the Bruce-Lois angle was mentioned in this Vanity Fair piece, I believe.

Yet again garbage like this is why Superman has become such a hard sale to the general public. You don't read or see Kevin Feige ever belittling any of the Marvel characters just to make a juvenile point that one has a bigger dong than the others.
