DVDTalk Horror Comics Challenge, October 2023 - 100 comics in 31 days

Barely managed 100 last year, reading most of them the last week. Hopefully this year I get a head start and stay consistent.

Anyone else want to join in?

Think I’ll finally read Rachel Rising this year, not sure what else.

Re: DVDTalk Horror Comics Challenge, October 2023 - 100 comics in 31 days

I recently joined Comixology, Marvel Unlimited and DC Universe so I will give it a shot.

I only watch and read horror related stuff in October so I had already planned to focus on reading horror comics when I read any.

I really should dig one of my horror omnibi out, but they’re so buried right now that I think I’ll stick to mostly digital this time.

I blind-bought Rachel Rising when IST had it limited to one per customer. Still haven’t read it. Recently back the Sixth Gun Kickstarter but that probably won’t ship till next year.

#100 Horror comics in October
Day 1 - Rachel Rising 1-4
Finally going to read this run, think I read issue one back in the day. Better than I expected so far, and I expected a lot. So I guess it’s also the best thing I read this week.

Re: DVDTalk Horror Comics Challenge, October 2023 - 100 comics in 31 days

I was in the middle of a couple of digital trade so I will just count the individual comics.

I finished up issue 3 thru 5 of KISS/Army Of Darkness - pretty lame stuff. I can't really recommend it.

I also finished up Dark Shadows: Year One issues 3 thru 6. This is solid if you like Dark Shadows. Adds a lot of gore and otherwise adult themes that were there in the original TV show but they obviously couldn't show on daytime television. Really enjoyed it.

Day 2 - Rachel Rising 5 and Ghostlore 1
monthly count - 6

On target in my reading but a little behind in actually posting, will catch up though!

Rachel Rising is amazing and I’m going to savor it about one issue per day this month.

With Ghostlore, Cullen Bunn finally wrote a horror book!

I enjoy his work, and the art and coloring are great here, but the story seemed a little samesy. Maybe I’ll read the trade on Hoopla someday, but won’t be buying the singles.

Day 3 - Rachel Rising 6 and Gold Digger Halloween Special 1
monthly count - 8

Apologies to @vincebon , but pretty sure I’ve never read any Gold Digger. But I collect holiday issues, so have a bunch. Enjoyed this one, even not knowing if these were even main characters or any back story on them. A little fluffy, a couple sparse stories and some nice pin-ups, about what I was expecting from a holiday issue.

Day 4 - Rachel Rising 7 and Gold Digger Halloween Special 2
monthly count - 10

The problems I had with the first special are more glaring here. Fluff stories with just a few sparse panels per page, and lots of pin-ups. The book took maybe 3 minutes to read. Not a good value. But at least Rachel Rising continues to be great.

Day 5 - Boo Halloween Stories 1-2 and Rachel Rising 8
monthly count - 13

Some early work from Kyle Starks in this little Indy anthology that sorta homages the old DC horror anthologies. First issue had me slightly regretting my years old digital purchase, but issue two was much better.

Day 6 - Rat God 1-2 and Rachel Rising 9
monthly count - 16

Loving the Lovecraftian/Native American mythology building here, looking forward to finishing this and all the other Corben Dark Horse work that I’ve been putting off for far too long.

Day 7 - House of Slaughter 1-5 and Rachel Rising 10
monthly count - 22

Appreciate the growing backstory on the houses, but sort of worried that this universe didn’t need expansion.

Day 8 - The Boonana Tail Halloween Special 1 and Rachel Rising 11 and Rat God 3-5
monthly count - 27

My holiday issue obsession compelled me to buy Boonana Tail. It’s definitely just for kids, but does have some work from Ryan Browne and Fabian Nicieza.

Rat God finishes well, thanks mostly to Corben’s always mesmerizing art. The story is a little uneven, with too many convenient rescues, but still interesting and just has me wanting more Corben horror.

Rachel Rising continues to be most excellent.

Day 9 - The Whispering Dark 1-4 and Rachel Rising 12
monthly count - 32

The Whispering Dark is a bit of a mess, disjointed narrative and average art with an unsatisfying ending. Not completely without merit, but I doubt I’ll read it again. At least I only paid fifty cents or a dollar per issue from Dark Horse Digital.

Day 10 - Behold, Behemoth 1-3 and Rachel Rising 13
monthly count - 36

Some great covers almost had me buying Behold, Behemoth in the shop, but now that I’ve started the trade on Hoopla, I’m glad I resisted. It’s an interesting premise and is pretty to behold (ha!), but just not grabbing me. I’ll finish it, but doubt it’ll change my mind.

My regular dose of Rachel continues to be a highlight of my day.

Day 11 - The Walking Dead Deluxe 1: Newsprint Edition
Behold, Behemoth 4-5
Rachel Rising 14
monthly count - 40

This makes what, fifty-seven different ways to own Walking Dead issue 1? I just thought it’d be cool to feel real newsprint in a new book, and knew it’d arrive in October so fell for the gimmick. Behold Behemoth ends as I guessed, not really interested in more if it does continue past this trade.

Day 12
Rachel Rising 15
Frankenstein Underground 1
monthly count 42

Enjoyed this Hellboy-adjacent book, but think I’ll hold off on reading the rest of the mini. It apparently ties into the main Hellboy and BPRD storylines, and I want to read all of that in order some year.

Day 13
Rachel Rising 16
Monsters Unleashed Prelude collection
monthly count 53

This recent-ish Marvel “event” should be right up my alley. While I missed the initial release of Marvel monster books from Kirby and all, once I found comic book stores with back issues things like Monsters on the Prowl were always at the top of my want list. This collection reprints five modern books and parts of thirteen older books to (re)introduce the monsters and heroes that will be in the 2017 story. It was fun reading or re-reading these books, and I’m cautiously optimistic about the new stuff, I usually enjoy Bunn’s writing and to be honest I’m a pretty easy mark for these sort of monster books. 264 pages for the Prelude, I’ll be conservative and give myself credit for reading 10 books for it.

#100 Horror comics in October

Days 14/15/16

Rachel Rising 17-19

Monsters Unleashed 1-3

monthly count 59

Big monsters invade earth, all of earth’s heroes show up to fight them off, Marvel’s old monsters like Fin Fang Foom show up to save the day. It’s ridiculous, and I’m loving it. Hopefully it ends well, but pretty sure it’ll be shelf-worthy no matter what.

Rachel still knocking it out of the park with pretty much every issue.

Rachel Rising 20-21

Freaks of the Heartland 1-6
monthly count 67

Moved Freaks of the Heartland to the top of the 7000 foot stack when I saw that the lead character was named Trevor. Turned out his last name was my middle as well. Beautiful art, and the usual (for me) Niles story. It was a nice premise, some good dialogue, but the ending was a bit abrupt and the characters/ideas weren’t fleshed out as much as I would have liked.

Clementine book 1
monthly count 79

Yeah, it’s as good as advertised. Every Tillie Walden book is now definitely a must-buy. Nice bonus that my copy came with her signature. 250 pages, so giving myself a count of 10 for it. Hope to finish book two this month as well, need to get to that BotM episode.

#100 Horror comics in October

Days 24-26

Sonic the Hedgehog Halloween Special 2023
Asylum 1-2
Hallow’s Eve: The Big Night
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Saturday Morning Adventures: Halloween Special

monthly count 84

Pretty sure I’ve never read a Sonic comic, so was a little lost on the characters here, but a definite kiddies only book it seems. I’ll keep buying the holiday specials of course, OCD sucks. The Hallow’s Eve one shot was just ok, but a decent premise, and I guess they’re making her ‘good’ now. I’m not really a mark for the TMNT Saturday Morning stuff, but the issue was fun. These old Asylum issues were nice. Several pretty short horror stories in each issue of this anthology, with some great creators. Looks like there were 3 issues, and the third does not look familiar, adding to my want list.

Days 27-30
Godzilla: Here There Be Dragons 1
Sgt Rock vs Army of the Dead 1
The Perhapanauts Halloween Special
Rest in Peace: Halloween
Clementine book two
Monsters Unleashed 4
Grimm Fairy Tales 2017 Halloween Special
Boo Halloween Stories 3
monthly count 92

Closing out the month with some random stuff from my bedside horror pile, instead of finishing Rachel Rising as planned. One issue per day just wasn’t enough, so I’ll binge the rest of its greatness once I clear off this pile.

The Godzilla and Sgt Rock books are freaking beautiful, I’ll be waiting for the hardcovers to finish reading/buying them though. Perhapanauts looks like an interesting title, I’m always up for cryptid investigators. The Grimm book was grim as expected, and that little indie anthology Boo wasn’t all bad. Book two of Clementine I’ve only read about an issue’s worth so far, will finish in November.

Day 31
Zatanna & The Ripper volume one

Stressful day finishing my horror movie challenge goals, so picked a light and easy book to get myself to 100 on this reading challenge. Originally presented via Webtoon, this print version is 200+ pages so I’ll give myself credit for 8 books to make it a clean 100 for the month. I’m a mark for anything DC horror characters, even fun young adult books like this one.

Overall, an enjoyable batch of random horror, highlighted by finally getting to Rachel Rising, made this the best month of reading for me all year. Probably only read 30 or so books a month on average, but hoping to get my baseline up to 100, as this rooms of regina aren’t getting smaller. Could probably do all horror for another 5 years with my backlog, but I’ll mix it up the other 11 months.

Thanks for humoring me with the ~20 posts over the month, having some accountability helped me stick to the goal.
