I only placed 3 small orders. Most of the titles were under $4.79 - $4.84 each. The only significant exceptions were Good Morning World and The Dead Zone S1-S3 which were about $15 each.
I passed on X-Files @ $22.28 this time around because I could not find definitive info that the only thing missing is the bonus DVD. I know 1 person here said discs 1-6 were the same in each set, but I saw comments about varius seasons on Amazon saying the extras had been discarded on discs 1-6. As I recall from renting them long ago, the deleted scenes were mixed in with all the discs and then repeated again on each season's bonus DVD which also had additional featurettes. If Fox/DDD is willing to sell 6 DVDs for $22.28 ($3.71 per disc), why not sell all 7 discs for $3.71 more, or $25.99? I'll wait for a cheaper box set.
I passed on several other titles, like the Airport Terminal Pack, because I could not find any in-depth reviews. As usual, I don't look for reviews of the movie, but for technical info, such as video quality, audio quality, layer info, bit rate, and extras contents. The 2 reviews I found didn't even bother to mention anamorphic or not. DDD's and Amazon's page don't bother to list anamorphic either, so I passed. [Edit: after more Google searching I found a large thread on Hometheaterforum which after reading many posts found the key info... DVD-14 and DVD-10, all movies are anamorphic, but I found another review claiming only 2 out of 4 are anamorphic.]
I had Google, DVD Price Search, Amazon, DVD-Basen, and DDD all open simultaneously. I typed each title into every window and couldn't find anamorphic or layer info for numerous titles. Some titles like Folks!, What a Way to Go!, and Convoy have at best 1 superficial review. The bottomline is no info = no buy. If it seems like I criticize DVD reviewers a lot, you're right. A few do a good job, but most have such superficial reviews they are worthless. Any site that doesn't list layer info (disc format) and clearly anamorphic or non-anamorphic on each review is superficial. The end result is it's too much time and effort to dig out this info. I'm a stubborn person when it comes to certain things. I just refuse to buy anything non-anamorphic or single layer nor will I buy DVD-18s any more because of quality control. Sadly it's incredibly hard to find this info out ahead of time.
Even though I didn't order much, I really appreciate DDD's 20% off sales and hope they continue to do them twice a year. Specifically, many people who make 6 figure incomes also have dual incomes. I know a lot of these people, so together the family makes well over 150K before taxes, plus most of them own multiple homes and feel even richer because of the housing boom. They are the ones who spend most of their free time shopping in fancy stores, traveling, going to resorts or to their cabin on the lake on the weekends to drive their boat or jetskis, buying their latest yearly SUV, and such. I overhear their stories each Monday. These people are the type that will walk into Suncoast or Borders and pay $24.99 each for a stack of new releases and never give it a second thought. I've told them about places like DDD and they tell me they have better things to do with their time than worry about $10 or $20. Some of these people have said they wouldn't be caught dead in a Walmart.
My guess is the people we see with massive orders are probably among those 150+ thousand single or dual income people (many of whom are millionaires) who do enjoy bargain hunting and take the time to use the Internet. (After all, Bill Gates supposedly used coupons when he went to the supermarket.)
I'm not surprised to see large orders like this. In fact, I'm surprised I don't see more. I don't know anyone who is poor... not a single person. The poorest person I know is me.
