I'm going to try to go the day after Thanksgiving in the hopes that dvds will be 50% off. Wishful thinking?

Any updates on the Orange County Stores...inventory selections on cds and dvds and inkling of 50/% off...that is my target to check some things out.

I've been to a few Bay Area stores. Campbell's hopeless. San Jose and San Mateo still have some Fox noirs left and some assorted Criterions. I was lucky to find Jules and Jim and Three Colors: Blue in an unassorted bin. I had $35.80 left on a gift card and I ended up getting ten cents back.

The San Jose store had one copy of Olivier's Shakespeare box set if anyone's interested. Also, if there are any Ellie Parker fans (a movie you have to see), San Jose had one copy in an unassorted bin and San Mateo had two copies, but one with the disc loose. I didn't get it with the Jules and Jim DVD 'cause that would've involved spending actual money.

Went to the Tower records at Buena Park mall on Saturday. Right now it's at 40% off.

Wishful thinking or not, I'm sure people will clean the Towers out the days after Thanksgiving thinking they are getting deals on CDs and DVDs at 40% or 50% off.

What do you mean by "leftovers"?

Wow, they actually managed to sell one! The place by me has about 500 of those. I think they will be paying people to take them on the last day.

BTW I overheard a cashier saying they'd be open about 3 more weeks.

I went into my local Tower and the sales were at 30% off. What was laughable was that they were still more expensive than a lot of online stores' regular prices without sales coupons.

What a joke. I was there and it was 40-60% off and I still found nothing worthwhile.

Oh well, bye bye Tower.

Its still 40% off near me. I'll echo what others have said, when their CDs are priced at $18.99 (plus 7% tax) its no wonder they are going out of business.

Yeah, but Tower did carry everything that was made.
What I always did was go there look around and find stuff I didn't know came out and then order it online from some other store.
Their prices were high, but a great store to hang out and browse.

It's kind of funny. When I was a teenager and in college, Tower's prices on CDs weren't too terrible -- not a lot below MSRP, but enough to make shopping there not a total waste of money. Then, as the market got more and more competitive with stores like Best Buy and Internet retailers selling for a lot below MSRP, Tower's prices got higher and higher. Seemed like a strange strategy. Ah well. I'll miss Tower, but I've rarely bought much there in recent years.

Not really. I like a lot of oldies and they rarely had the stuff I was looking for. Granted their selection was worlds better than places like Sam Goody. In the days of B&M's, when there were no online alternatives they were king. But since Amazon, CDNow, Deep Discount, etc. came around they took a backseat both in terms of competitive pricing and in selection.

That's probably what I'll miss most. It's not the same browsing at Best Buy or Wal-Mart. They really only carry the big name obvious titles, and not the more obscure stuff.

Thursday and Friday all the stores will have 5 CDs for the price of 4, with 40% off the list price (lowest-priced one is free), also a few stores have individual deals going on. One had all HD-DVD and Blu-Ray discs 50% off, another had 50% off all TV show discs.

I just got back from the tower store in nashville... they too are open 11-7 thanksgiving day... quite crowded... most people holding multi discs... buy 4 get 1 free with the 4 bought being 40% is quite a deal! (makes them nearly 50% off if you're buying 5)... stock is beginning to looked picked over on most titles... then again, they have more copies of some than they had of that same title just a week ago so they're still getting stock or transfers in... singles are now 70% off and also included in the buy 4 get 1 free deal...

Any word on if the 4-for-5 extended into the weekend--and if not, what the current deal is at Tower stores?

Portland is pretty much the same, but the Manager's special was the Napoeleon Dynamite SE w/Tin, t-shirt, etc., for $23.00. Still had LOTS of copies left.

They've got TONS of those Napoleon Dynamite sets- they should be down to a buck or so by the last day. There's thousands of the Tony Orlando & Dawn Show collection throughout all the stores too; I've meant to get that since it came out but they should be giving that away soon too.
