If you like The Wire or OZ, you will also like Homicide. There is a shared pedigree, in terms of writers and producers and Homicide is also set in Baltimore. For my money, Homicide is better than the other 2 options.

Looks like Homicide is leading the race right now. Keep those opinions comin'. Thanks!

Not sure why Oldboy is showing "avl 11/14" but I guess it's no biggie.
Schramm looks interesting, but I had a hard time watching the director's previous release Nekromantik.

YOu won't regret watching The Wire!

hmm...perhaps I should go for those Homoicides, myself. Can anyone here speak to the level of quality across the entire series? Is EVERY season great? Any Wire fans here? How does Homicide stack up with The Wire (aside from both being set in Baltimore..and don't they also share some of the creative people? Writers? Producers?).

The West Wing had higher highs and lower lows than the other two, Six Feet Under was perhaps more constant throughout, but Homicide is the one I love unreservedly and can return to over and over. Also, I don't know the price comparisons, but you'll get quite a few more episodes with Homicide or TWW, since they had more and longer seasons.

The Wire is from the people who made Homicide and the first two brilliant seasons are at a great price. I'm not sure either The Wire or Oz will end up with a box set, as they are a bit underrated compared to the other HBO shows. So don't let that hold you back.
Also, the quality of Oz varies WILDLY from seasonto season. The 1st season in particular is waaay better than the rest of the show. and the final season or 2 is almost a parody of the earlier seasons. PRetty much from the season where we got the big Adibise/Sayid conforntation the show went downhill (IMHO).

Wow, lots of people spending so much money on DVD's. Will you guys have time to watch them all? I hope nobody is having to take out a loan to buy these DVD's or having to pay them in monthly installments with interest. If you do, then maybe you are really overdoing it and time to take a step back and look at this obsession and what it is doing to you and your family. Remember DVD's go down in price over time so that hoarding vast quantities of DVDs is not to your disadvantage. There will be other sales. Use your money to invest in something else. By the time you even break the shrink wrap, they will have become so cheap. Example, the Monty Python 16 ton megaset use to have retail price of 120 dollars I believe. I remember walking through Sam's last fall and seeing this boxset, with only 14 disc, and the price was $99 and now you can get the 16 disc set for 48 dollars in this sale. Some seasons of Smallville can be had for 15 dollars at your local Wal-mart now.

I was really considering the Rome First Season Set by HBO but I think it is way overpriced and it is relatively brand new. So is Doctor Who First Season with only 13 episodes and you will be paying 53 dollars after the discount for it. Not much value there in my humble opinion. The Studios and vendors can keep it for now. I have lots of other stuff to watch and will wait on these.

I think this was already discussed... Everyone is in their own different financial situation. It's up to that person to decided what they want and how much they want to spend.

I'm on the fence about the Python set myself. I was a big fan growing up, but I'm afraid if I buy this I'll end up never watching it (especially b/c my wife hates MP!). Aside from the really cool feeling of owning all of the classic MPs, have people who bought this find they watch it frequently? At all? (I'm sure I'm not the only one here who buys lots of stuff and notices a year or so later that it's not even out of the plastic yet!!

Was I reading this wrong, or did I see a few people buying the HD DVD drive for the Xbox 360? Cause I can't find it anywhere on the DDD site. If they are selling them, can anyone provide me with a link? Thanks in advance.

David Simon is the primary link between the two series. There are also some episodic directors that are common to both. The last 1 or 2 seasons of Homicide were relatively weaker, but still a cut above other stuff on TV. If you like the Wire, you won't be disappointed by Homicide.

I picked one up at Circuit City, there is also a 40 off 199 coupon that you can find at slickdeals(it's in the thread), so I got it for 159.99 + tax. And if you have a discover card, register it in advance(see discover's website) and get an additional 5% cash back...
