Well, I indulged and I just got burned.

The version of Silent Hill in the Silent Hill/The Dark two-pack is NOT widescreen. Despite the packaging, the disc inside is clearly labeled FULL SCREEN and is not a misprint. It's the foolscreen version, pure and simple.

I'll take it back to Wal-mart tomorrow and exchange it to see if this is a constant thing or if I just got slammed.

I also bought this double feature today. I was about ready to tear-off the plastic when I read your post. I will wait for your next post before opening my DVD!

Well, the weird thing about this is that while the packaging said widescreen, the little sticky label on top said 'Silent Hill FS' so maybe there's two variants floating around. I'll check tonight.

If not, I'm tempted to email Sony and get a widescreen copy that they promised.

Update: exchanged the set and the Silent Hill version in the double pack was STILL the same full screen that is not described on the package. I threw an email to Sony last night (an email I had to dig to find) and they basically told me to send them the disc, the version of my DVD player, and the email I had sent.

I replied and told them to not send me a form letter and to listen to my complaint. Apparently I'm going to have to go higher for this. Anybody know of a phone number or real email address I could get some action from (if possible)?

On the bright side, I did get another Resident Evil Extinction movie cash ticket so the release is essentially free. But this is just unethical as hell, so I'm going to take some action. Be warned: Walmart's white theftproof tag on the top of the DVD is correct. Silent Hill is foolscreen, despite the Sony packaging.

I returned my unopened copy of Silent Hill/The Dark to Wal-Mart earlier today. I explained to Customer Service that the DVD was mislabeled as "widescreen" when it actually was "full screen." The refund person did not have a clue what this means, and just merely refunded my money and threw the DVD into a box with other return stuff.

A lot of the Wal-Mart promotional DVD deals are in "full screen" versions because the typical Wal-Mart customer does not own a widescreen TV, but rather owns a smaller traditional TV where a full screen presentation is easier to view! I am always careful in purchasing these promotional DVDs. However, in this case, Sony obviously screwed-up with packaging description.

No kidding. The saddest thing is that now their customer service is telling me to send back the DVD on my own dime so they can fix their error. Did a little checking on Amazon to find out that sending my disc back (insured and with confirmation) would cost more than simply waiting for a cheap sale and getting a widescreen copy that way. What a mess.

I'm just going to wait it out. I'm not going to bother pointing out a hideous mistake on my own dime to a multinational corporation. I'll just be smarter in the future. Oh, and I'm sure the extra Movie Cash ticket I got when I returned it will ease the pain, but not much.

No display at my WM but I picked up Christine(SE)/Darkness Falls 2-Pack for $9.72. It has that snazzy dreadtime Stries banner which I kinda dig, I might search out all of these as a mini-collection

I found the same item for the same price today. I know this is a new double feature title that was not a part of the Resident Evil promotion from the other week. This leads me to think this might be a continuing series like the Midnite Movies line.

Well, I still need to get the rest of these. I figure while most of them are honest about what they contain, some of them are fairly good deals. Too bad one of the Wal-marts around here have stopped carrying them. D'oh.

Still, I actually found a theater who'll take Hollywood Movie Money nearby, so I'm not that perturbed.

It seems these are a limited run and some stores are selling out of them. They are out of production so when they're gone they're gone.

FWIW, when dealing with wal-mart - I've had success in stating that the DVD is defective - the box says widescreen, the DVD says/is fullscreen. If they require you to swap for another copy, open the new copy in front of them and show them the same results. Unless the CSR is a total ahole they'll see that the whole batch is defective and eventually refund your money.

That said, the 'line' as it were is continuing with other releases such as Christine/Some Other Movie and the three-pack with Wolf, Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (Full Screen), and Sleepwalkers. It seems that this may be Sony's half-assed Midnite Movies: instead of unearthing gems, they're putting out old stock in gift sets for cheap.
