If anyone from DD is reading this, I just want to thank you for MANY years of good sales. Nothing lasts forever, and some of us do realize that these sales were not likely- in and of themselves- a good revenue generator for you.
I always assumed they were a loss leader intended to build awareness/market share for sales during the rest of the year.
No company is going to prosper cutting their margins so thin twice a year, just so the people that only shop there twice a year can get a bargain they feel they have become entitled to.
I'm surprised and disappointed to read so many "f**K them, what have they done for me lately" posts here. More proof of how spoiled we are as a culture I guess.
My 'want list' is down to about 4 things right now. That's partly because I've loaded up on so much crap in previous sales that I still haven't watched, and partly because studios slammed the brakes on releasing the kinds of things I care about. In any case, after all the addition and subtraction is done, DD will still be cheaper for these things than anywhere else. Will they be as cheap as they would have been last year? No, but so what? The point is, These are titles I want, and I want to try to get the best bargain I can with them. And that will still be with DD.

Well, I'm very interested in Garry Shandlings Show, which at the current price of 81.18 at DD, is a steal (the have had it priced that way since preorder status). Amazon has it for 139.99. I was hoping for the 25% sale to reduce it further (but I bet it would've been bumped up in price), but oh well. I may still order it.

Many people on this forum have been complaining about the 20% to 25 off sale for years. Complaints about prices going up right before the sale. Complaints that the prices didn't seem that great because others like Amazon were having sales with better prices. People have also said how much less they were buying during the 25% off sale because the prices didn't seem that good. People also mentioned that the thread(s) listing the bargains found were also smaller than in previous years. I have no doubt sales have gone down and it just didn't pay for DD to have the sale. This new sale is very straight forward. 40% off list price. No more wondering if you should buy now or wait until the sale starts.
No more wondering if the price will increase before the sale. For them no more calls about how someone bought the DVD yesterday but now the price is cheaper. We know what today's prices are of the DVDs we want now. We know what the price will be during the sale. If they are not cheap enough we won't buy them. The same thing happened during the 25% off sale. If the price was cheaper elsewhere even after the 25% off we bought it elsewhere. This new sales allows us to make informed decisions. In my case I will probably be buying more CD box sets during the sale as some of the prices should be quite good.

Re: DeepDiscount 40% Off MSRP Sale 11/13/09-11/29/09
I'm out. : (
All things considered with their recent "non-sale" they have been pretty damn good to me over the years. I truly look forward to these sales and save up $$ to make the big buy every six months or so. I can't justify the spending now.
I'm going to try to wait it out and try my luck in the used bins for the things I want.
Thanks for the memories DD.

I too appreciate what DD has done in the past. I will have to wait and see what kinds of deals I can find over the next month. This sale just does not give me the best deal on most things on my wishlist. Thanks again for the past deals DD.

I sent an email with a link to the DD price for Garry Shandling. We'll see what happens but I doubt anything will come of it.

If going down hill means they will still provide better deals then Best Buy, Borders, and B&N; and be competitive with Amazon and Walmart, then that is a variation on going down hill that I can continue to deal with.

Considering normal street prices on a lot of items, 40% offf MSRP will usually translate to 5-10% off their usual price, less on items that are heavily discounted due to high competition among retailers, more on light selling items that rarely get discounted.
One problem a retailer faces is if customers expect too many sales, they won't buy anything at other times of the year. Sometimes, retailers have to "retrain" customers into looking at their prices in a different light.

A "loyal fan base" that only shops during rock bottom sales is not the sort of fan base that a retailer is most concerned about keeping.

DD's best deals were never during their sales but during the intermittent offers throughout the year -- which, admittedly are/were great for those items that never went on sale. For those, 40% off retail will definitely get me in the proverbial door to, at the very least, compare prices.

I haven't really bought much of anything at a DD sale in quite a number of years. I was broke for a few years, and then when I got back into DVD buying, the sale already wasn't what it used to be. That being said, I'll look at the prices on some of the other MST3K sets that I don't have because DD is usually cheaper on those than Amazon.

Look, DD in its prime was unstoppable and I think we can all agree it dominated the game. Maybe now it's lost a step or two and maybe it does stumbles while sliding into 2nd. But before you callously cut it, think about the veteran leadership you'll be losing and the clutch hits you might be missing out on.

Wasn't there a GREAT one or two day sale at DD just before - or after - last fall's 25 percent sale - where prices on a few hundred titles were at their lowest? Maybe we'll see that again this year. I was thinking it was on Black Friday.

Hope you never have to deal with their customer service...or shipping times.
