Star Trek: TNG The Next Generation - complete series - deals?

Are there ever good deals on getting Star Trek The Next Generation, the complete series? The only truly great deal I could find in past threads was a past Amazon Black Friday sale.

There are a bunch on eBay, but they seem 'too good too be true' (i.e., smell like bootlegs).

TNG is just aching for some kind of discounted complete set release. Each year I'm surprised they haven't done it. It really needs to be ~$100 for the series.

If you can play Region 2, TNG is much cheaper from Amazon UK.

You can say that again. I forget, but I have seen the set for $200. The minute this baby gets sub $180, I am all in, rippin style.

I got mine at columbia house last year during a sale for under 150. They have it on sale occasionaly. it may have been in their last 40 percent off sale plus 5 off every 25 that they had in the tv club sale a couple weeks ago, as well. It might be worth it for you to join and have an account ready when they have a sale.

Re: Star Trek: TNG The Next Generation - complete series - deals?

The various Star Trek series are hard to find at anything less than about $mid-30s per season. The best prices I've seen were under $20 on S1 of Voyager and S1 of Enterprise at Wal Mart in recent months. I'm laying in wait, should the prices ever get reasonable. All I have at this point are Voyager S1, S4 and S5.

Pretty sure it was. I remember reading a post about somebody buying it...

Re: Star Trek: TNG The Next Generation - complete series - deals?

When I think that the old videos used to cost $20 each and had two episodes it boggles my mind that people don't want to pay $30 for an entire season. Given the length of each season you are paying less than $2 an episode with each set having about twenty hours of content each. Also depending on your viewing habits its probably going to take six months to a year to watch the entire series so you can pace your purchase.

I bought the old hard case TNG DVDs off ebay second hand for $180. I would go that way. People buy the set, watch it once, it sits around gathering dust and then they sell it off a few years later.

The best deal you are going to find right now is wherehouse.com or secondspin.com 20% or 30% off sales. They have a few seasons marked at $33 before coupon.

Those Amazon UK prices are pretty good if you can support region 2 PAL. Going for about $24 a season and in slim line cases to boot (which I would prefer). I recently picked up all the DS9's in region 1 for around $36 a season in the less usable plastic cases. If I had thought to check Amazon UK I might have gone that route instead.

If you are still looking for a good deal on this series, mark your calendar for June 7th. We are doing a one day "Star Trek" day with the studio and Star Trek Next Generation Complete series will be priced at $199.99. Some of the other series will be specially priced as well.

I was able to snag a non-bootleg complete DS9 set a few months ago for $150

Re: Star Trek: TNG The Next Generation - complete series - deals?

Speaking of which, aren't the Trek series overdue for a re-release? Outside of their initial release, the only time I've seen any new Trek product is either the new movie or those Best Of packs. I know Voyager S1 is out and about for $20, but shouldn't the rest of them be getting a slimline re-release to capitalize on the next Abrams Trek film? I know Paramount has issues with the franchise now that it's been off the air for years, but after the reboot you would think throwing the discs into slimcases ala the Stargate franchise would bear some fruit.

You'd think.

But this is Paramount we're talking about.

Given that there's currently no weekly series of Paramount's beloved cash cow, I doubt we'll ever see any reasonably priced sets.

There's no excuse for it other than greed. X-Files season sets were ridiculously priced when they first appeared, but now they can be had for $15-$20 each. So it's not like it can't be done.

They are more likely to put out new full series sets of the other series like the next generation set with new bonus disk. And it wasn't that much cheaper. Possibly blu ray issues of enterprise.

shameful, using the forum to advertise your store. $200 bucks still not a good price, IMO.

where have you been? familyvideo has had their own dvdtalk sanctioned bargains thread for ages.

Oh, and it currently goes for $121 and $136 MORE on amazon and deepdiscount respectively, so $200 is a pretty good price.

Sure, if they popped in every thread and said 'no, buy it from us!' it might be wrong; but FamilyVideo is a very welcome member on this forum.

As TallGuyMe just mentioned, they're trying to save you over $120 and you call them shameful? Apologize or no dessert tonight.

Re: Star Trek: TNG The Next Generation - complete series - deals?

$200 is pretty good, considering.

I think the real problem is that Paramount has been wholesaling them for too much and are overly-hesitant to reduce their asking price as the shows age. I could see some reasoning for doing this with the remastered TOS, but TNG has aged horribly as it was filmed on tape and will never be that great a DVD product video-wise.

Actually it was shot on 35mm film transferred to tape then edited. Assuming they kept the original film stock which I doubt it could be done proper. This however would take a lot of time and money and Paramount is too cheap for that.

Thanks for the clarification. That's what I was getting at.

All the effects are on the edited tapes, so they'd have to redo all the effects in order to have a properly-remastered set. I don't see them ever doing that.

When I was at Wal-mart a couple weeks ago I noticed the individual seasons have a lot nicer packaging now. The outer box is now flat in the middle (around the spine) the old boxes are a pain to keep dust off of.

Paramount's being lazy about it. MacGyver has been going for $20 or less per season, so it's not like they can't discount them. I think they're trying to see how much cash they can get out of the Trekkies before the second movie comes out and they end up tossing everything out in cheap sets. Those things can't be moving at this rate and considering how dead the franchise is on television, why not toss them out and gain some interest?
