I haven't had a problem with those yet. Tonight (Sunday night) I just replied to the auto-reply (since self-cancellation failed) and got a very quick response that my account will be closed within 48 hours. All I wrote is that I wanted to close the account and that I already had another one so I wasn't leaving them.

I was just able to cancel on line by selecting "member deceased" - sort of morrbid but it worked - i would have been really surprised if they made you call up after you selected that reason for leaving

It's a really strange option to have online, since I don't give anyone my login info to anything.

I have been emailing them via the contact us page using account information as the header. I just say that I have completed my membership obligation and wish to cancel my account. You will receive the standard email back, but reply to that and they should cancel it.

I haven't been spending much time 'round these parts recently and was annoyed to find out I couldn't cancel online. So I came here, searched out "cancel" and found this method.

Columbia House is dead to me now.... hmmm... or rather, I'm dead to them

I used the "member deceased" option. Morbid....but effective! Got a cancellation email immediately and account has been closed.

Not sure if this has been covered in the previous pages of this thread, but there is a way of canceling via phone buried in the "menu options" when you call the regular CH number. I discovered it while listening for something else.

You basically have to keep hitting the "for more menu options" button, until it comes up. Then you get transferred right to an operator. Not as easy as canceling on line but better than waiting on hold...

I heard that also. But, then you are subject to the "Here's something you might like"(etc) push - which is what we're trying to avoid.

One never has to wait on hold when calling Columbia House. If you were unaware of this please check out the The Wolf Husky Phone Bypass thread. For those that want to call in without an account number, check out post 176.

(And yes, the phone queue bypass is linked to and mentioned in the FAQ thread. While the FAQ may be somewhat out of date regarding the latest codes and deals, the general club information remains valid for the most part. That's why the thread is stickied to the top of this forum.)

While I am aware that there are other reasons why some people don't like to call CH, such as the sales pitches thejester mentions, the notion that one has to wait on hold is false. Wolf Husky solved that one years ago.

I wonder how long it'll be until the "member deceased" option gets too popular and they start requiring you to fax them the death certificate.

Of course you are correct. I supposed I could have written "it's easier than punching in 000000 twice so as to fool the menu system into thinking you've got a savings code it doesn't recognize thereby connecting you immediately to an operator" but I thought I'd keep it simple.

Has anyone gotten a new membership approved after using the Member Deceased reason for canceling? I died earlier today and was wondering how long I should wait to apply again :-)

I cancelled one of my accounts a few days ago via the deceased and I was wondering the same thing. Might try tomorrow.

Me neither. Naming calls, y'know

Two minute phone call to cancel and followed up with the e-mail request. Of course I can still log in 48 hours later, so I'll wait till Monday before enrolling again.

I just emailed them and they cancelled my account for me.
No problems and I'm still alive for future accounts.

I just cancelled three accounts today on the site - without being deceased. It looks like they revamped the cancellation part. If IIRC there were a bunch of options to choose. Now there are only 5 or so. So you guys should give it another try.
