Yes that is a good price for a new 36XBR450.

I guess I'm a little skeptical. Brand new? In the box? Not a repack or grey market?

Yes, it a great deal on that TV. But I believe with the price drops on other sets, the Wegas are not the deal they used to be.

For instance, you can get a HDTV 16:9 40" Toshiba (40H80) for $1550. That is the route I would choose.

i have never owned anything with the TOSHIBA brand name. Is the quality of TOSHIBA as good as SONY. Sorry for the ignorant thinking, but thats why I'm asking the question. Is Toshiba's Reliable.

I've had a 27' ' Triniton TV for over 6 years now and it is in great condition. I just wanted to put this one out in the living room and put the 36 inch my room...

I just want a TV that has very good pix quality, I'm foreign to all that HT talk. But since it being my friends last couple weeks with Sony , he has offered to get me a discount on a Sony product of my choice.

These opinions reflect my personal opinions combined with the opinions of many on this and other forums:

Among the largest brand names for Direct View TV's (like the Wega) Sony and Toshiba are the two that people prefer for picture quality and build quality. Sony Wega's are the best, but the Toshiba are close and are easily the best value because they cost hundreds less.

For HD RPTV's (like the Toshiba 40H80) here are the top brands to look at:
1. Pioneer Elite (great TV's but quite pricey)
2. Toshiba (tie) (again the BEST value)
Mits (tie) (another good buy)
Most people do not recommend the Sony brand (for HD RPTV's) because they are among the most expensive and the picture quality is only average.

Since you are here, I figure you watch a lot of DVD's. Therefore 16:9 40" Toshiba would give you a much larger viewing area than the Sony. 47% larger by my math. Go to Best Buy and check out the Toshiba 40H80. Don't buy it there because it is overpriced and well it's Best Buy. Beware the picture at Best Buy will typical be a crappy signal. No progressive scan DVD, no HDTV signal. See if you can find a specialty shop in the area that carries this TV. They typical will show it in a much better setup.

Skar brings up some excellent points. I own the Sony 57XBR10W and my personal feeling is that you are paying extra for the Sony name! The picture quality in my opinion is only equal to the other TV's mentioned. For the money, you may want to check out The Mitsubishi Platinum series (if your thinking about a 16x9 HDTV).

Hey Skar,

Where did you find the 40H80 for under $1600?

The cheapest I can find it for was $1800.
