Optical cable questions!

I need to get an optical cable since my home theatre only has an optical input. I was looking at the Monoprice website but was kind of confused. Which is the best one there to buy?
Also, is there an adapter that would let you hook up a coax output to an optical input? If so, are there any disadvantages to that?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Basically you need your coax cable input into a Coaxial (RCA) to Optical Digital Audio Converter then your optical cable from the converter into your home theater's optical input. I did a similar set up and it worked great

While we can debate the merits of different cables all day, for optical TOSLink cable, I use the cheapest connections I can find from ebay... so roughly about $5-$6 including shipping. All TOSLink cables are fiberoptic and it either works or it doesn't, Light doesn't degrade. More expensive cables have more expensive connectors, so if you are planning on plugging it in and out a lot, you might want to pay more. Since the only time I ever unhook mine is when I'm buying a new DVD player cheapest is best.

Monoprice seem to only offer Toslink cables. So I should be ok with anything on that page then?

I guess I wasn't clear. TOSLink is just the name for the optical cable, kind of like HDMI or DVI, etc. It isn't a brand, it is the optical cable connection which is used for digital audio. I'm sure you're fine with whatever they have.

Check Radio Shack. I always find optical cables there on clearance for around $2 to $3 a pop and have never had any problems with them.

My favorite idiot BB line - (why I should buy monster over Retcon optical cables) - "you want the thickest shielding you can get". Me - for what reason? "To shield it from outside interference and stuff". Me - "you mean shield light from more light?". BB - "exactly!". Retards.

Yup. If you bought it at Best Buy or someplace it's probably worth trying to take it back to get something cheaper.

The words Monster cables really make me cringe. They are an absolute ripoff if you ask me
