Dr. Hsu also responds to emails pretty quickly. He will help you with choice of sub as well as placement in room, etc. Their subs in that price range are absolutely sweet.

When you order it, also order U-571 and test it out with the depth charge scene.

i was showing off that scene when i lived in an apartment. my plates were rattling in my kitchen cabinets with the sub set to 3/10. my upstairs neighbor came running down the stairs in a frenzy and asked me if everything was ok.

i felt good about my $500 purchase after that.

I absolutely need to upgrade my sub. I have an MTX SW1 sub that needs to go. After I upgraded my fronts to RTi10's from Polk, that sub is non existent.

My only problem is that I can't upgrade for months yet.

I see that you have a VTF-2. I'll have to decide between that sub, and the SVS PB-10

OK, I took some measurements of my living room. It's about 13' wide, 21' long and the ceiling reaches about 12'. But the ceiling actually is kind of a V shape, so it's not like the entire ceiling is 12'. So, by those measurements, I guess my room is about 3276 cubic feet, although because of the ceiling shape it would be less.

I just wanted to mention that I have an SVS 20-39 PCI and I really like it. It's a cylindrical sub with a smaller footprint than most box subs, but it is kind of tall.

If you could spend a little extra, I would go VTF-2 in that size room. My room is 16 x 15 with 10' ceilings and I am using a VTF-2.




That was the only thing that held me off from buying SVS when I got my HSU. The cylinder type doesn't do well with the WAF.

Although the glowing reviews of the VTF-2 made my decision very easy.

OK, I broke down and ordered the HSU VTF-2 MK 3 Subwoofer. It's definitely more than I wanted to spend, but I'm trying to look at it as an investment, something that I will be able to use for years to come. Until it arrives, I'm probably going to be kicking myself with buyer's remorse, but once it gets installed, I'm sure I'll have a grin from ear to ear. (At least I hope ...)

Thanks so much for all of the help. I really do appreciate it. And be expecting me to come back here and beg for advice in a year or so when I start upgrading all of my other audio equipment.

Get a bass setup CD, usually intended for car setup, and use it to set up the sub properly. You've just ordered something a lot different than what you are used to. It can actually play bass, not that boomy crap most people listen to. As long as it is set up properly.

I can even fool seasoned HT guys. They listen and say, "where's the bass". I point out that there isn't any really in this scene, they're just used to bloated subs. Then I play one that does have bass and knock them down.

I'll definitely do that, Spiky. Good advice. Is this the kind of thing that would probably be easiest to find at a car stereo type of place?

I am not sure. But they are marketed for car audio. I'd probably just get it on the 'net.

OK, I just wanted to drop in and give you guys an update. My new sub arrived yesterday! (And thank god it arrived after I got out of work ...) Anyway, it is quite the massive beast. My old subwoofer looks like a little dwarf next to my new one. Now, I haven't run the setup CD yet and have so far only placed it right next to my TV where my old sub (I know that's usually not the optimal location), but all I can really say is ... wow. And I guess holy shit! You know, I was perfectly happy with my old setup, but this new sub just changes the way you watch something. You actually feel it when you are watching.

But of course now the sub has exposed how badly I need to replace the OTHER speakers in my setup. It's not something I can do right away, but you guys be prepared next year or in a few months to get quizzed a bit more on other speakers!

Isnt it amazing the difference a sub makes?

Be happy. You got a sub that can go super low for movies and nice a tight for music. You'll be listening to your old CDs all over again and you'll hear notes that you didnt even know were ever there.

A lot of subs can produce good base but they don't "recover" quickly enough to play the next note. Yours does. It will be like hearing your collection all over again.

I think this thread has sold me on a HSU VTF-2. My current sub is ok, and while it is quite a bit better than the run of the mill stuff that usually come in HTIB sets, it is by no means a high end type sub.

The last handful of posts have me frothing at the mouth for one of these.

Here's a thread bump for everyone! It has been 15 years, but it appears that my Hsu Research subwoofer has bit the dust. It is no longer able to power on, so I guess I'm on the market again. I still live in the same house so the dimensions mentioned a few posts back are still the same. Are there any brands or specific models people would recommend? Would Hsu still be a top option? I've heard good things about PSA and Rythmik - any opinions? Or any specific ones that would meet the needs of my room?

Appreciate any help.

What's the budget now? Your room size is pretty similar to mine but you have higher ceilings. I came in with 1 SVS SB-1000 and added a second when we moved into the house. I upgraded to 2 PB-2000 Pros after about a year. The 1000s were nice, but I just wanted louder and deeper bass.

I'd head over to AVSforum if you want quicker responses. Those guys know their stuff, just try to be very specific with your use case to prevent some of the mindless debates you get among internet experts.

I'm pretty happy with my Monoprice Monolith M12 v2 that I got last year. Really shakes the seats! Monoliths are generally rated pretty high these days. I would wait for a sale though.
