Apparently the very small market for these things reached a point where they were unsustainable. I should hit up a few electronics stores around and see if anyone still has any or is blowing them out, but they'll still be expensive as hell. Never going to get a Viera or a Kuro, but I suppose a few stray Samsung may still be around somewhere.

Re: Plasma is dead....

I've had a Samsung plasma for awhile now, and still love it. Bummed to see Plasma pretty much die as a technology.

Re: Plasma is dead....

So glad I got my 60" Panny plasma last year, and even happier I jumped up from my intended purchase of a 55" ST to the 60" VT. I didn't even know plasma was going away. I just had the cash on me and walked into Best Buy. Kinda funny to know that had I waited six months to refi my condo, I'd have never gotten the plasma I always wanted

Re: Plasma is dead....

So I take it no one owns an LG and can comment on whether LG plasmas are any good, right?

Re: Plasma is dead....

Purely anecdotal:
My brother had an LG plasma. It was a total piece of shit. The few I've seen in stores did not look any better, IMO.

If I could afford a Panasonic, I would grab one in a heartbeat.

Bummer. I would have liked to have fallen on one as a back up in case my Panny ever dies on me but that won't be the case now.

Glad I got my VT60 late last year. It should last long enough for OLED to become reasonably priced.

Pioneer Kuros are long gone, and I think that Panasonic Vieras are probably all-but sold out at this point. I understand they were the favorites of videophiles. What was Samsung big-bad? I too would love one, but even on sale blowouts, or what few there may be, they'll probably be expensive as hell. This whole "OLED will be even better and cheaper" sounds way too good to be true to me though.

Re: Plasma is dead....

I guess I'm in the minority but I prefer LED to Plasma. The picture has always looked better to my eyes.

Re: Plasma is dead....

Calibrated LED vs calibrated plasma? Not in a store? Because any in-store opinion is meaningless.

But actually, you're not in the minority. Most people are swayed into thinking brighter is better in stores.

Re: Plasma is dead....

I love my Panny plasma (bought about 3 years ago) and I'm bummed I won't be able to buy a new model when my current one dies (which hopefully isn't too soon).

I'm going to blame this on the general, uninformed public, buying bright LCDs instead of plasmas with their better, smoother warmer image.

The weird thing about that is that I just watched TVs as I got them for the longest time, brightness was the first thing which I really started getting annoyed by enough to adjust. But I'd blame the price more than anything else.

I have a 58", 50" and a 42"; all Pannys. Hopefully, they all last awhile before I have to replace them, too.

Re: Plasma is dead....

I am glad I bought 50inch Panny plasma last year. I also have a 42 inch Panny Plasma in the bedroom. When friends come over for movie nights they always comment how nice the blu ray picture looks. I have convinced couple of them to buy Plasma. Rest of them have gone LCD or as they proudly claims LED route.

If you have a few minutes to spare here is a fun article comparing Plasma with 4k tv (both cheapest)

Re: Plasma is dead....

When friends come over to watch a movie (because I don't loan out my movie collection), and the subject of plasma being an older technology comes up...I put in Avatar on my 50" plasma.

Cricket sounds in the room.

Probably because it's Avatar, which is boring as hell.

Re: Plasma is dead....

Do the Samsung plasmas have the same capacitor problem as all of their LCDs from the last 10 years?

Re: Plasma is dead....

Anyone have one of these? Seems like a pretty good deal. I chatted with Amazon and they sent me a price guarantee that is good for the next 48 hrs. So I was hoping someone had first hand experience

Re: Plasma is dead....

it's LG, so it's not even close to being as good as Panasonic or even Samsung, but I haven't' seen any specific reviews about it.

Re: Plasma is dead....

I get that. But since Panasonic is out of the question at this point and Samsung is about twice the price, I'm wondering if this might be the last chance to grab a plasma at a decent price. I figured a 60 inch 3D smart plasma TV for $699 sounded pretty good.

EDIT: I just checked Consumer Reports and it's ranked second, right behind the PN60F8500. So I might take a chance. I can always send it back at no charge if I'm not happy with it.
