These "October Horror Movie Challenge" threads are for the discussion of the films in the 31 FILM SUBSET list.

The plan is for everyone to watch this film on the October day in the thread title, and to start discussing it the morning of the following day.
You may start discussion early if you want, but the preferred plan is for this to be as much of a group exercise as possible, with all of us viewing it "together" and discussing after.

Of course, you are totally encouraged to participate in these threads even if you haven't watched the movie on the designated day.
Even if you haven't watched it in years, or are not participating in the Horror Challenge, please feel free to chime in.

Spoiler tags aren't always used in here, so if you have yet to see the film BEWARE OF POSSIBLE SPOILERS.

Re: "Microwave Massacre" Reviews/Discussion - 2022 Horror Challenge

I believe it was my first challenge that I discovered this one. I was scrolling through streaming horror titles on Netflix, hoping to find some short titles for shameless padding in my first mad dash for 100. It was even in the Netflix horror classics section. I gave it a try and found it terrible but hilarious, one of those instant bad movie classics.

Years later, we got the Arrow Blu-ray edition of this. As usual, Arrow did a great job on the disc. Having seen it, I decided to watch it with the audio commentary from the writer-producer. It's an all right listen. He seems very self-congratulatory. I guess I don't blame him. It sounds like he didn't make any money on this for a long time, and now he's cashing in. Good for him.

Microwave Massacre is the right kind of dumb everyman humor and Jackie Vernon has great comedic presence. It's stupid and sarcastic but also the kind of casual viewing that doesnt take itself too seriously or require much from the viewer. The comedy is over the top and rarely laugh out loud but black and breezy enough to standout although sometimes a bit corny. Im not sure I'd call this 'bad' but just the right kind of beer and popcorn silly. Ha, remember the glory days of cooking everything in the microwave - a joke that might be the least clever part of Microwave Massacre.

The first time I watched it, I hated it. It’s grown on me since. You really have to appreciate Vernon’s comedy and delivery to get into this movie.

This is comfort food and perfect with Hot Pockets or your favorite microwavable snack. Pour lots of cheese over whatever you heat up.

Love the dialogue. It makes me laugh. As absurd as everything gets, Vernon keeps it in just believable enough to have fun with. Helps that it was shot on film because SOV is not kind to horror comedy.

I really appreciate the effort put into these posts, especially the additional artwork section.

Re: "Microwave Massacre" Reviews/Discussion - 2022 Horror Challenge

There is never a serious moment here, and I found myself wanting this to be over after about the first ten minutes. I have the Arrow version, and had never seen this before. That cover really had me expecting something that really wasn't delivered in a coherent manner. I think part of the problem was that I had seen too many horror movies yesterday, and was expecting something just a little more serious than what I got.

Unfortunately, the only part of the movie that was really funny was the closing credits. The movie got slightly more bearable as it went on, as some actors stopped trying to do bad acting and spoke more normally, suggesting that the movie may have been shot more or less in order. They could have done a better job with the kills (at least one was off-screen), but maybe they were in a hurry to get back to the bad jokes.

There's a little comedy from hearing Frosty the Snowman's voice in a horror film, about the only thing I truly loved about Microwave Massacre.

Yeah if you were hoping for a serious movie, I'm sure this was a disapointment.

I'll say this for the movie: that opening scene is memorable.

"You know when it comes to cooking you'd make a great decorator."

It's like an odd homage of Hitchcock's Frenzy with the Chief Inspector and his wife's gourmet dinners.
