Don't buy the version without the banner!

kuroiinu: The DVD without the 25th Anniversary banner was the first release of the disk and it DOES NOT contain all of the extras. AVOID this disk, as it is generally considered inferior.

Thanks. Can you clarify one thing though: The banner missing on the disc I saw is the [SPECIAL EDITION] banner at the top of the front cover. The disc does have a small [25th ANNIVERSARY] banner at the bottom of the front cover. Is that what you meant?

Thanks for your help.

After all the replies in the forum I thought I would end up hating TVYNSB. I didn't see it in the theater. I ended up getting it for free from one of the online vendors after they had made a mistake on one of my orders.
I have a Dolby EX Surround system and the sound was unbelievably good on the new version. I didn't mind the new effects added in either. I was pleasantly surprised.
I still own the 25th anniversary edition for the documentary. I also watch the documentary every now & then and find it really enjoyable. I'm going to keep both of my copies.
If you haven't heard the sound on the new version you should pick it up. It's worth it for the new soundtrack.

I've never seen the "Never Seen" version, but the 25th anniv. is a GREAT DVD to add to your collection

Here's a link to the cover of the one to avoid.

Evidently, as long as it says "25th Anniversary" on it, you are okay.

I had the 25th collectors edition for quite a long time, all I really care about though is the movie, not the extras. I can say this.. compared to the 25th edition, the version youve never seen blows it away in every aspect. The video on the new version looks better then alot of movies that come out today, definitely a massive restore job done on it.. unbeleivable compared to the 25th. On a final note, I found the new version's added material to be a hell of alot more scarier then the original cut, in contained alot of subliminal pictures that were very shocking to say the least.. and the infamous "walking like a spider" scene, man, if those sound affects dont give you a instant chill, I dont know what will. Being a big Exorcist freak.. I would recommend buying the new version.

The restored version (TVYNS) was just released this week in Paris. A gorgeous job on the restoration. I have no problem with the changes made in this version, and judging by the French audience, they loved it too - and they are a tough crowd to please! It plays very well, building up suspenseful moments - then letting you breath a little with a bit of humour - and then pulling you back into the horror.
The sound in the theatre was turned up a bit too loud for my tastes, but for the typical hearing-impaired young audience today, I'm sure it was fine. The film is not at all dated and holds up perfectly well for today's FX-weaned public.

Does anyone know why there is a 25th ANN edition that doesn't say Special Edition on the top of the snapper case?
I got it from Columbia House. It has the same extras but the case doesnt say special edition. Just "25th Anniversary". Anyone have any ideas?

Maybe your case is just ordinary and therefor doesn't live up to the vaunted SE treatment. hehe

I bought my copy from Columbia House and it doesn't have the have an SE banner on top either.

Maybe CH makes their own boxes

I was thinking of that as well. It has to be something to do with CH. Other than that I'm stuck trying to figure it out.

25th Anniversary edition with or without [Special Edition] banner

I read in Home Theater Forum that the 2 snap case versions of the 25th Anniversary issue are the exact same thing. The one with the SE banner came first, but in later re-prints, they dropped the SE banner. Both still have the [25th Anniversary] label at the bottom of the front cover. The picture you see at most sites including amazon is for the original print. My guess is that they dropped the SE designation when the TVYNS came out to avoid confusing people (although I think it may have had the opposite effect).

I was lucky to find both last week at a Target store, of all places. The differences in the case are: a) the SE banner at the top of the front, b) [25th Anniversary] label on front cover "stamped" instead of just printed--you can see the sunken letters, c) gold lettering instead of white of the descriptions at the bottom of the back cover, and d) [Special Edition] label on the spine of the case also. Everything else is the same, word for word.

After much comparison, I personally liked the SE case better, so I took it
