I doubt that I would ever watch any of these again. I saw them plenty of times as a kid, and I'd rather spend my time now watching films I haven't yet seen. Still, I'll buy the set if I can get it for under $25.

Knock off the threadcrapping, name-calling, and insulting. If this behavior continues, suspensions will be handed out.

Thanks You

I personally have NO DESIRE to buy this DVD set. Not only has this been TOO LONG in coming but Lucas would not support the DVD format in 1998 when it was struggling against DIVX. (Does anyone else remember this?)

Does anyone remember the 1998 poll of 5,000 Internet users where the number one movie wanted on DVD was the Star Wars trilogy? When asked about this, Lucas blandly said they will come out in 2006! This really shows how much he cares about his fans and support for the format.

The time frame to maximize sales for Star Wars on DVD has long past. Lucas missed his chance. There are too many other cool/great movies on DVD now.

Star Wars Special Edition sucks!

How can they say that the original Star Wars is coming out when it is teh Special Edition with the whole fake looking digital effects? Bring out the real Star Wars by bringing out the originals.

I doubt it was Truffaut's intention to imply that it's ok to go back and change a movie 20 years after it was made. All he's saying is that there comes a point where a filmmaker has to call it a done deal, even if it seems as though more could be done to improve the movie. Lucas seems to be taking this quote and skewing it in order to validate his idiotic revisions.
The quote is saying that artists are generally forced by outside influences to stop the creation process before they would like to. In the case of film, it is generally due to time and or money constraints that are placed on the director by the studio.

What is implied by this, as stated by earlier, is that most directors would take extra time and use more money to continue developing their films if they had the opportunity. Lucas did have that opportunity and decided that his films were too important to him to leave in, what he considered to be, an "abandoned" state.

It doesn't matter. Once the final cut of the movie has been submitted for distribution to theaters, it's FINISHED.
There are a host of director's cut releases that would point to the opposite being true.

Tons of directors have enough time and money to go back and "finish" their films, but most aren't that dumb.

If these were actual Vegas odds, I bet Lucas would take the bet, then make a single copy of the original original trilogy on DVD for himself.

But when most directors make a "director's cut," they aren't replacing the existing version; they're making a separate version. What Lucas is doing is pretending the original doesn't exist, and that's where the problem lies.

My opinion is simple and obviously, far from unique.

The 1997 Special Editions are inferior to the 1977, 1980 and 1983 versions of these films.

Coupled with Lucas skimping on the extras after waiting so long to put these on DVD, it's a no-brainer...especially since I won't be able to buy The Empire Strikes Back separately, which is the only truly great film in the OT. No sale.

The sales will be so high Lucas won't miss my money...but would be even higher if he listened to people who feel the same way I do. Too bad.

I doubt I'll buy it, this isn't the original trilogy, it's the special edition trilogy. I still can't believe the first time I saw the Sarlaac Pit in Return of the Jedi, I was like WHAT IS THAT HUGE WHALE WORM lookin' thingy?!?! It just chaps my arse that Lucas will not put the ORIGINAL trilogy onto DVD.

Geez what is it with the Star War movies that causes such a commotion anytime they are bought up,my favorite post in this overlong thread is from a guy on page 2 of this thread that said "i'm going to get them.I could care less what the rest of you do"that more or less sums it up for me too,if you dont want them dont get them, just quit your whineing about them

And that's your opinion, and I (and many others) can express their opinion that it's stupid why Lucas ignores fans who want the Original trilogy on DVD. That's why they call this a discussion board...

I kept on saying that in soooo many other star wars threads. these guys talk big but in the end when they declare they wont touch another han solo or darth vader figure you know they are at target every other day hoping the next shipment of "choke action Vader" has hit the store. It's the Lucas syndrome. they love to bash lucas, but also love to love star wars enough to buy any form they release it in.

Gotta love all the hate against the DIRECTORS CUT when any other movie you name will see petitions for a directors cut to be released.

Some may be surprised I wasn't in this thread earlier.. but you know, there is only so many times you can say "Hey big babies, go buy a Laser Disc player and hit up ebay. the version you want is out there"

J out.

Well your copies don't suffer from LD rot so you can be happy about that, but you still need to get the BEST versions on LD.
