"Malcolm X" Deserves a Special Edition in the Worst Way.
Anyone else agree. This movie is amazing. I saw it for the first time since it was in theaters. Incredible. It's kind of an epic-esque film, and to me it seems to be a forgotten movie. Would anyone else agree with that? No one ever talks about it and I never hear it discussed as one of the best films made as of late or in the top AFI 100 (maybe I'm wrong).

That's a really cute thread. Half of the people either think they can reedit the film better than Spike or want all mention of him expunged from it. Good plans.
Back on Earth...Spike has talked for a long time now about how he'd like to do a thorough "Making Of" documentary and include it on a 2 disc SE. I would very much love to see it, because it's a superb and grossly underrated film.

I couldn't agree more. The movie in my collection I most want to have a SE is "Malcolm X." I saw it several times in theaters, several more on VHS and still more on DVD. I read the autobiography, the screenplay backwards and forwards, and would love to have a commentary track from Spike Lee and Denzel Washington who, taking nothing away from Al Pacino, DESERVED the Best Actor Oscar for his role. He quite nearly BECAME Malcolm in that movie.
Would love a full two-disc treatment to this most deserving and important film.

I wonder why they've been resurfacing lately? 
Anyway . . . yeah . . . this is on my top 5 "need to be released" list. I would be ecstatic if Criterion handled it. Good to hear that it's on Spikes radar.

An SE of Malcolm X would be great but I'd like to see a She's Gotta Have It release before another Malcolm X rerelease. That should also be done by Criterion. It's a shame that they've done two Michael Bay films and two Wes Anderson films (and rumor has they're trying hard to get his next) of which only Rushmore can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with the rest of the collection but only one "Lee Joint."

This is my favorite Spike Lee film and easily Denzel Washington's best performance. While I'm glad to have the film on DVD, it really needs a deluxe release. I'd like to hear commentaries from both Lee and Washington.
Lee went through quite a bit of hell to make the film, as he thoroughly discusses in the making-of book, "By Any Means Necessary: The Trials and Tribulations of the Making of Malcolm X." Lots of behind-the-scenes info plus the original screenplay.

...not to mention the wealth of historical info begging to be included -- newsreel footage, talk show appearances, etc. I'd love to see it done right, absolutely.

I would love a retrospective documentary that chronicles the production objectively. Not an hour-long lovefest. Also, I would love to see an OBJECTIVE documentary on Malcolm X.
I really believe this will become a Warner 2-Disc. Lee wants it and many film fans want it.
