movies are more than entertainment for me... Just about everything I have (almost 600 titles) is watched pretty often. Although, most titles are watched with the sound off...

I don't regret their purchases and plan more - until the next system comes out!

I've second-guessed the movies that I got free or through some great deal--but never really loved. 90% of the time, I just end up ebaying them to pay for something new that I really want. I pretty much try to keep my collection under 300 titles. I mean, geez, if I can't find something to watch in 300 DVDs, something must be wrong with my entertainment values.

I've slowed down a bit lately but I don't second guess my collection. I am on the verge of canceling netflix, though. I'm just not plowing through enough movies during the week anymore to make it worthwhile. I've got enough stuff to watch with the ones that I buy, around 10 a month and the rest of my collection that i adore.

Yep. I'm ebaying them just as fast as I can copy them. At my peak I had about 1000 DVDs and I'd been collecting since 1997. Now they just take up too much space and I know that HD-DVD will be here before I know it.

I don't know how many I'll end up keeping. I'm hoping it'll be down around 35 or so, maybe as high as 50. You know, things like the LOTR EE sets and Fight Club and some of the more kickass Criterions.

You're losing it James. You're gonna miss alot of those DVD's you're getting rid of. Sure HD-DVD is right around the corner, but it will take a very long time for it to reach the affordable consumer level, and even longer for the studios to get around to releasing alot of the titles. Plus, when you burn DVD's, you have to split most of them up onto 2 discs, and normally have to sacrifice either the sound quality or image quality in the interests of space. No thanks. This may not seem like a big issue now, since you have been relegated to using a small tube, but when you get back up into a big screen presentation, it will just not be the same.

I have at times second guessed some of the titles in my collection, and have gotten rid of some of them accordingly. But for the most part my collection consists of films that I want to own, and feel good about owning them. With the help of Netflix my urge to buy alot of second tier stuff has been tamed. When HD-DVD becomes attainable, I will begin the SLOW process of replacing my DVD's with the HD edition as they become available. In the meantime, I am very happy with my collection, with the latest addition being 21 Grams.

What I think alot of people fail to recognize when it comes to HD-DVD is that while the technology may be right around the corner, it is going to be quite some time before it becomes a replacement for DVD, for a few reasons. For one, DVD is an extremely hot format right now. It has given new life to the home video industry, and they are making way to much money off of it right now to squash it with new format. They will take their time getting this to the public, sucking every last penny out of the DVD format. Secondly, when it does become available, it will be quite some time before the hardware becomes affordable to the majority of people interested. I will not be purchasing one of those first gen HD-DVD players for $1500, and neither will most people. The software will become available accordingly, as they will not be pumping lots of money into a format that most people cannot afford yet. This leads us into the last reason, which I spoke of before. Even once HD-DVD does become available and affordable, it's not like all the titles that are in one's collection will be available. It will be a very long process getting the catalog titles out. Hell, they are still getting stuff out on DVD! In the meantime, your DVD's will still be the best option.

I used to second guess my DVD collection all the time; but that was about a year ago when I had close to 200 titles. I realized that I would hardly ever watch some of them a second time. The reason I ended up with them was because they were cheap or "a deal I could not pass up".

So, I sold the ones I could live without, and kept my faves. Now I only have about 30 that I'd watch over and over.

Nope, never second guessed my DVD collection.
I have about 120 or so currently and have been collecting since 2001.

I follow these rules when buying DVDs:
->I only purchase DVDs which I will want to watch again and again.
->I make sure the DVD I am buying is the definitive edition (i.e. no more pointless dipping, thus why I have very few Sony/Columbia titles in my collection.)
->If I can get the DVD at a reasonable price.

I used to collect sports cards, then comic books, then action figures, then stamps but DVDs have provided the best enjoyment for me and I am sticking to that!

I don't 2nd guess my purchases (although I'm guilty of buying a title or two out of curiosity). But in my collection of 2000+ titles, I'd say I'm very happy with what I've bought. Being a film fan sionce I was a child, it seems like there are always a few films that are on my want list, and since I began buying DVDs in 1997, the passion for new discs is just as strong as day one. I don't collect DVDs from a specific company just because they have released titles I've enjoyed in the past (Criterion, Something Weird, Blue Underground), I'd consider those blind buys and a waste of money. Otherwise, I think the decisions I've made have been good ones. A few regrets? Yes...but no more than 2 or 3. On average I add 5-10 new films a week, although with the Chiller Con coming up next month, April 23rd is when I'll buy 50-60 titles in a day. Something I only do twice a year...thank God I have an understanding wife!

I have about 40 or so dvd's in the 2 years that i have had a dvd player so i would say im not 2nd guessin' my choices

No collection is ever permanent. It will always change, be it all the additions or subtractions or both, as I add and subtract all the time. By checking out my collection you will see things divided into "owned" and "Have seen," with some subfolders (see: "sold"). The "Have seen - sold" films are titles I once owned but sold (some of these are damn fine films but offer little in replay value, IMO). Keep your collection active, and you will never second-guess it. Oh, if I ever second-guess a title I own, I just re-watch it. Sometimes I’ll keep them sometimes I’ll sell. Many times I do not have to second-guess a DVD, and I just know it is ready to be passed on to another owner.

P.S.
I don't blind buy. I make educated decisions on what to buy, based on what I have already seen or based on my familiarity with the director, so I am confident about what is truly worthy of preserving in my collection. This keeps my collection very manageable and free of crap films, so I'll always have pride in my collection and no regrets.

This isn't true. A properly copied DVD-R of a DVD does not sacrifice anything by way of video or audio.

I only buy movies I want to see (or have seen and just want). I have begun to buy used movies almost exclusively because of cost. Right now I have about 350 movies. I don't think that's a ridiculous amount.

Every couple of months I second guess about 20 titles or more. I get rid of them on eBay. I've owned around 700 titles but keep the fat trimmed so I have about 300 or so most of the time. I'm happy to have sold Smokey and the Bandit 2 this week, as it is likely the worst movie I've ever bought on DVD.

Mine needs refining, but I love the majority of it. I'd just hate it if anyone stole from it. Dvds that need to go are Flatliners, Fatal Attraction, and some others. I may donate to the library, though.

I have around 300 and have spent about $2400 and second guess it every time I play one. If I could go back in time about half of them I wouldn't buy because I won't watch them enough to justify the purchase. It is neat to have a big collection for friends to choose from if they come over to watch but that is rare that it happens. Instead they borrow a movie because they know I'm a nice guy and will loan them one. Now that they are coming out with all the TV shows and cartoons from my childhood on it is making me use some restraint and still costing dearly. Luckily I don't smoke or drink or do drugs so this is my only addiction and I have the money. It is a nice and safe hobby that can be expensive.

But don't think of it that way. In the time period you bought those, how much did you spend for gas, food, other things that you don't still have today? All that money is gone with nothing to show for it.

Meanwhile, you still have the DVDs and if you want that $2400 back, you can easily sell those DVDs. Maybe even make something on it (if you only spent $8 a DVD, you can certainly make something on it).
