Hey all,

Normally I can't stand "how many do you....", or similar threads (especially the "what are you watching this weekend" threads...haha). But this one is a bit different...

I was just looking and I have about 12 DVD's that are still wrapped and/ or unwatched that have been sitting in my collection for over a year. They're good movies, it's just that I haven't gotten around to watching them.

How many sealed OR SIMPLY YET TO BE WATCHED dvd's do you guys own that have been there for a while?

0. The first thing I do is open them up! Sometimes there could be something wrong, and I would hate to find out a month later when I get around to watching it.

I can't see why anyone would leave things wrapped when you never know what may be wrong (obvious damage, wrong disc, missing a disk if it's a series, etc) and return policies usually only last 30 days.

Reponse to Thread: Looking at my collection, I have 14 box sets that are sealed. Way passed 30 days on some of them. Plus my actual collection, which is packed up and on its way to a storage facility, maybe 40 or 50?

Zero, since I always open them to catalog the chapter stops into my database (of course that's a crapshoot now, since some don't come with inserts anymore).

Nada. Always check the disc, as others have said.

Ditto!...i never normally buy a bar of chocolate without opening the packet and sampling the goods inside so why should i be any different with my DVD collection..which happens to be in a non-profit making state of disorganisation

I don't have any, but then again my DVD collection is only in its infancy (around 20 titles ) I'm always excited and open them the minute they arrive in the mail. Oh yeah, and to check for any defects like others have pointed out.

Zilch, I open them as soon as I get them to inspect them.

Open them up right away. Check and see if anything is missing and make sure the discs play OK.

I used to leave them wrapped (not sure why but I used to love seeing wrapped DVDs on my shelf) but after getting a couple of defective discs, you learn pretty quickly to open them immediately to check all the chapter stops, etc.
If you have discs that are over 1 year in their wrappings, and discover a problem with it, you're more than likely SOL.

None, since I don't buy a DVD unless I plan to watch it.

I will never understand why somebody would purchase a DVD and then not watch it.

Honestly, what is the point of having 50+ DVDs unwatched in your house? My wife doesn't have a problem with my DVD collection ( slightly more than 100 at the moment ), but I think she would if I didn't watch them.

At least 25 or so. Including three TV season boxes (ER S2, TDVDS S1).

Most of them are film library "essentials" that I got from CH, that I have to be in the "mood" to watch, but definately need to own.

I had a VERY large VHS collection, and am trying to replicate the titles I had there as best I can, even if I don't watch some of the titles very often (i.e. Adventures in Babysitting).

Other ones, like Hannibal, are ones I purchased because I am a completist for the most part, and need to own all sequals/prequals if available (save for Jaws 3 and 4).

My problem with leaving DVDs wrapped hasn't so much to do with making sure there are no problems (though that's important) as it does with my uncontrollable need to peel the wrapper off of anything I get my hands on. I can't help myself. When I buy a DVD as a gift for someone else it takes every ounce of willpower I possess to keep myself from ripping into it.

I'm guessing, but I'd say around 300 - 400.

I don't buy a box a cereal and open it before I'm ready to eat it.

I understand wanting to open it to make sure it is okay but whatever part of me that controls my compulsion to buy DVDs also compels me not to open them right away.

That being said, if I read that box sets are coming packaged with two disc #1's & no disc #2, I'll be sure to open it to make sure. Regular discs with no known problems stay in the wrap until I'm ready to watch them.

Everytime this thread comes up, I have the same answer... El jacko squato. Zip. Nada. Like the others have stated above... If you're keeping your DVDs sealed, open them 8 months from now and find no disc, the wrong disc, damaged disc or artwork, etc... Then you're the one to blame.

As far as the great "have yet to be watched" pile, I always keep that at around 10 or under... It's currently at 8. I'm cutting back on my buying as well, so I hope to get that number down...

I have a bunch (probably 20-30) on my shelf that are still wrapped that I haven't watched yet. Why haven't I unwrapped them? Because I'm crazy like that. I live on the edge. It's the little fears that make life worth living. I also buy milk without checking the date, and have been known to buy a pen without testing it out by scribbling on the test pad. I also have been known to buy shoes just by telling them my size without trying them on first. Like I said. I'm crazy like that.

Keeping them wrapped helped me out a few times as well. Police Academy is the perfect example.

I had this on VHS, and after selling off the tape, I got the DVD release from WM. Never opened it, as I wasn't in the mood. Then, a few months later, I read that a 20th Anniversary edition is coming out with all 7 available, so I promptly return my sealed copy to WM (no receipt), and walk out a happy man.

none...i currently have 316 dvds (all opened as soon as I get in the door/get them in the mail).

My ritual:
1. Get home (usually from blockbuster...previously viewed rocks)
2. Unwrap dvd while computer boots
3. Enter dvd in dvdprofiler (which rocks http://www.dvdprofiler.com/ivs/index.html)
4. Back up dvdprofiler
5. file dvd alphabetically on 1 of 2 dvd racks

Probably 50 or 75. I also have a huge number of opened unwatched, but I'm working on it (so far this year, I've watched about 157 of my DVDs I hadn't watched before).

I usually open them right away, but not always. If I have any doubt at all (after shaking it a bit) that the disk is on the hub, I open it.
