A quick note

I do believe VCI will include the original version and extended cut. Let me say that at no time has VCI or Dan ever said they'd be releasing a "new" cut of the film. Specifically Dan would be overseeing a new, anamorphic widescreen transfer. If they've made plans for anything otherwise, I do not know of it.

Finally, a brief response to Jeff. Yes, I do believe that you can be very fond of your work yet still find flaws in it. It's just something you cannot escape.

Dan had a string of health problems in the early 80's and along with getting screwed over by the producers of his 2 directorial efforts, his screenplays being chopped up, the Carpenter situation, I can easily understand why he might've been fairly sensitive to negative comments. Jeff, he's a good guy so don't hold past comments against him.

I thought I'd resurrect this thread to see if anybody had any new information regarding Dark Star. Anything?

Been a long time guys but some progress has been made.

I've recently been chatting with John Carpenter's assistant, Gina, via e-mail today, and she suggested that VCI contact him about what they'd want from him. I've given both sides the essential contact information for each other so, if all goes well, Mr. Carpenter will be involved.

O'Bannon, on the other hand, seems to have dropped out or forgotten about the project entirely. I called him about 2 weeks ago, and have yet to get a response.

Long time fellas, but here's the latest fro VCI;

"Some other issues have come up which we need to straighten out before we redo Dark Star. We are working on it though and hope we can begin in earnest on the new improved reissue soon."

Well here is a bump from over a year ago...

I was looking into getting DARK STAR since its the only film on DVD thats out now that I need to complete my Carpenter collection but remember someone saying that a new edition was coming. While its not out in R1 yet, the new version is out in R2.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/...189824-8883629

Anyone hear if its coming to R1 soon?

That R2 is not worth getting, it is not what is being discussed here.

Actually more of a dry, sci-fi comedy. Definitely worth checking out. I'm enjoying my current disc, but awaiting an upgrade too...

Rad. I'll buy any new edition of every Carpenter flick that comes out.

Yes, I'd even buy a new edition of Memoirs or Escape from LA.

Can we get Kurt Russel to do a commentary with Carpenter. I know he had nothing to do with the film, but Carpenter's commentaries are boring without him.

"evilbaby" and I are one and the same.

Anyway, YES a new DVD is coming. I wouldn't expect a "Blade Runner" type box set but the bonus materials do look promising. I'm not mentioning details until I'm given the ok to make them public.

I cant wait. It should come with a giant beach ball as part of the set so we can recreate part of the movie in our homes. Wait, i think we could recreate most of that movie in our homes? Cant wait to hear what the extras will be. Hoping for DTS at least...

I love this movie but won't dip again unless it's the original theatrical cut.

I'll take Escape from L.A. in 16:9. And what about a 4-disc (well, an SE at least) collector's edition of They Live?

-R2 commentary
-Retrospective interviews with Carpenter and Piper
-Scene-specific Trey Parker/Matt Stone commentary for the fight scene
-Featurette on the fight scene
-Theatrical trailer
