The World of Tinto Brass and Italian 70/80s. explotation films
I would like to start a thread that discusses the current DVD releases of Italian xplotaiton films.
Recently I picked up Tinto Brass' Salon Kitty (long overdue) in my collection and was very pleased with the amazing restoration job Blue Underground have done. I had a copy of Salon Kitty on a Polish VHS tape (Italian uncut version) and now have finally put it in the dumpster (14 years old) .
Anyhow the restoration job performed on Salon Kitty is the least to say impressive. The depth of the DVD presentation reminds me a lot about the love Criterion put in their releases.
So my question is- within the style and genre that Tinto Brass represents what other dvds people have picked up? I am interested in discussing the quality of the DVD production....so your recommendations and thoughts are welcome.
I thought of following this discussion in the Blue Underground thread but that would limit it to BU titles only and of course prevent people from focusing primarily on BU's catalog.
So your comments, thoughts, recommendations of other titles from the same genre??
Pro-B
ps
I would like to make it very clear that I am NOT interested in a discussion of Adult titles which WILL move this thread to the Mature forum. Only serious discussion of Euro/Xplotaiton/"Italian flavor" DVDs.

yes I have this...I only picked up the BLACK ANGEL from England. The set is well worth the money.....though they could have done a better job on the a/v quality.
Do you have other recommendations?
Cheers,
Pro-B
on a side note do you know if the remainder of Tinto Brass' dvds are dubbed or subbed. I would prefer original Italian language.....

have to admit I don't know that much about Italian sex-ploitation films, I have seen some of Spain's Jess Franco's sleazy films, but that's another subgenre in of itself.

I also tried the inspiration for Salon Kitty NIGHT PORTER...but have to say that Criterion's transfer (non-anamorphic) is not as perfect as their other releases...

Italian coverwork-
I wonder where Gutwrencher is to suggest other dvds or comment on the quality of his genre collectables
PS
For the record I have a very interesting interview on an Italian VHS where Bertolucci discusses the work of Pasolini and Tinto Brass. Very insightful....

The only Brass DVDs I have are the BU Salon Kitty and a Danish R2 disc of Caligula. How is the quality of the DVDs in the R1 box set? I've seen and liked The Key and am curious about seeing the other two films in the set.

The boxset quality is...decent, good-anamorphic transfers...BUT....not even close to the bang-up job BU did with Salon Kitty....As to the films quality...they are superb Brass...I like them a lot....but then I grew up with them so
As to Caligula...I still do NOT own the disc...I would like to pick up the Swedish release as I am told is the best one YET i am not sure that is the case since in Scandinavia most of these releases are with the same transfer in Denmark, Norway, Finland etc....what's the quality of the Dnaish one? I suppose you picked it up back in the days of the DVDOO free shipping to the US.
I wish someone did a 2DVD SE set in R1 for the Caligula disc....I am positive this wont be Blue Underground.....too pricey for them...

The quality of the disc is pretty good. The only thing I have to compare it to is the old Penthouse VHS and of course it is definitely better than that. I've heard that its comparable to the US disc, if not a bit better. At least it is anamorphic and doesn't have any forced subs. Unfortunately it doesn't have the reportedly excellent "making of" documentary that the US disc has. I would love to see a SE set myself. Maybe someday?
Thanks for the info on the box set. I might have to pick that one up.

...Behind Convent Walls is a personal fave, although I dont own the dvd yet. soon.
I have seen the following, some time ago, but only have a few on dvd:
11 Days 11 Nights 1 &2...I'm a Joe D'Amato fan.
2069: A Sex Odyssey....'74, Germany.
Attenzione, l.....'74, Italy.
Cattivi Pengieri(Who Mislaid My Wife?)...comedy, '76, Italy.
Little Lips...'78, Italy.
maybe these are not up yer alley...but I'm still a student myself and have much to learn about the genre. I'm still working on the nuns.

I am interested in lucious designs....as the ones seen in Salon Kitty, Visconti's THE LEOPARD, Caligula....but let me reiterate...Salon Kitty's production was outstanding.....Tinto Brass is indeed the master!!
I suppose I have to look through Xploited for all of these....
I thoguht this one would be good....but NO!!

I would love to see an anamorphic UNCUT (no blurs) version of this HIGHLY CONTROVERSIAL film- I have heard some "bad, really bad" things about it.
R1 release mentioned.....??
PS
GUTWRENCHER:
Do you know if Hell Train-ELSA FRAULEIN SS (1976)....is anamorphic??? Xploited indicates 16/9 but not DVDEMPIRE....

Pro-B, do you know if that Japanese Beast in Heat disc has an English audio track or subs? The writing on the back is too small for me to see in your pic, but it looks like there is only one audio track and subtitle track on it (awesome cover art BTW ). I've always wanted to see that film (too bad for the inevitable censoring on the Japanese print though).

" Possibly the sickest of all Nazi Exploitation films Luigi Batzella's THE BEAST IN HEAT is one of those "you've gotta see this" films. In a remote village in occupied Europe, the SS pursue their inhumane treatment of captured partisans in efforts to force them the betray their comrades. Dr. Kratsch (Macha Magall), a sadistic biologist, concentrates her efforts on the female prisoners with refined tortures and humiliation, leaving them to the mercy of a sex-crazed half-man, half-beast she has created with experimental injections. As the advancing Allied forces approach the village Kratsch herself becomes a victim of her own fiendish rituals.
# DVD FEATURESBeautiful Uncut Widescreen (1.85:1) Transfer
# Spanish Audio Only
# Optional Japanese Subtitles
# Trailer
Please note this Japanese DVD has optical censoring of genitalia.

Sadly....it will be a cold day in hell before this film lands in the US.
