It just seems to me that the "coveted" Collectors Series rating should be a little harder to get. I don't want this site to turn into Rolling Stone and give slobbering BJ ratings to mediocre crap like the Golden Girls. If there was a bonus disc of Bea Arthur fisting and scat outtakes, I might not be so critical.

I can probably find it somewhere, but what is the criteria of a 'Collector's Series'?
Obviously almost every DVD release is going to have a bit of 'you have to like the show/movie' to be considered a purchase; of the top 100 CS's, I currently own only about 5, and am only really interested in one or two more. While I can respect the release and the use of the DVD format, the *content* isn't that which I would want to purchase.

Hmm, upon reading the review, even given my above paragraph, I don't know if I agree with the CS rating:
"This is simple Dolby 2.0 stereo" Okay, that's an artifact of the time. No biggie.

"This release is rather short on extras" - ENG CC's, original opening credits, a stupid Joan Rivers segment, and of course uncut [which I don't consider an Extra for a TV show, that's a requirement].

I used to watch GG; my family would pop a bunch of popcorn and we'd watch GG, Empty Nest, maybe a couple more from the lineup, then Doctor Who on Saturday night. And of course I enjoyed them as I watched them, but when I see reruns on Lifetime, I have no interest in watching them again. GG did do some new things and had stars that didn't look like any other stars, but I don't know if that is enough to cement its place in television history and rank it as a CS, given the other flaws/lacks in the release. Especially when the show is widely available in syndication, albeit edited.
But again, any review score is going to be objective; what I like is when people tell me *why* they ranked something a certain score, and let me decide for myself.

Hey, no fair. I wrote the first of DVD Talk's two reviews for the 3-Disc Clerks set, and I most certainly did slobber all over it and give it the Collector Series rating.

To address the topic of "what is/constitutes a DVD Collector's Series" DVD:

The straight and easy answer is: whatever the individual reviewer thinks it should.

For some, the DVD has to have nothing but the best in terms of video, audio, and mondo special features. Think the Extended Editions of the LOTR films, Alien Quadrilogy, Panic Room, etc.

For others, it has to contain nothing less than classic, five-star, primo material, adequately presented, with or without extras. The play's the thing, as they say. For me, that would be something like "2001: A Space Odyssey" or "The Maltese Falcon".

For most, it's somewhere in between. Since ratings are an entirely subjective process, take them with a grain of salt.

For me, it all depends. Bad Boys 2 had a ton of interesting special features, and sported a thoroughly nifty transfer and reference quality audio. But the movie blew hard. It received Recommended rating as a result. If I liked the movie, it would have gotten Highly Recommended. If I thought the movie was the greatest thing ever, Collector's Series.

Slacker was an excellent film (not quite five-star, but excellent). The audio and video were far from reference quality, but they were excellent considering the quality of the original source material. But the supplemental features were outstanding. Collector's Series, easy.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century? Guilty, nostalgic pleasure from my past. No special features. Standard (nothing great, nothing horrible) presentation. Recommended.

And so on. Other reviewers may vary. Personally, I wouldn't poke the Golden Girls with Janet Reno's unit; at best it might have merited a "Recommended" rating. But that's just me. Someone else might have told you to skip "Buck Rogers" entirely...

No offence, but people have different opinions on what is good, and how should you determine what should receive the seal, just because you don't like it? This show has countless numbers of fans, and was even number 1 on Amazon.com. You people on this forum digust me, especially compared to the prominent and educated members of some other fourms around like the HTF.
