The Frighteners: Director's Cut - 11.29.05
Universal Studios has announced The Frighteners: Director's Cut for release on November 29th.
The 123-minute laserdisc extended cut (adding twelve minutes of footage) will come with a new 2.35 anamorphic transfer and a Dolby Digital 5.1 track.
Bonus materials haven't been announced yet, but this has been announced as a single disc release - so there's probably little chance of including the full 4.5 hour documentary. But we'll wait and see.
Retail is $26.98

Well they could do a double sided dvd release like they have with Casino,Schindlers List and so forth.
So don't be too down on the single disc news until the full specs are announced. If by then,it's a bare bones release. Then begin your bitching,that is all

Excellent news... been waiting on a special edition of this for YEARS.
They better put the commentary and documentary on the thing though. I don't care if it's DVD18 or not.

Five sides on three platters equaling roughly 270 minutes.
The story is that after Frighteners, PJ was into pre-production on King Kong. The film fell apart because of Mighty Joe Young going into production first (I think). With all the free time on his hands, Jackson poured all of his energies - that's an understatement! - into this laserdisc set.
Soon after, he began pre-production work on Lord of the Rings.

Back OT, several months ago I found a used copy of the first release (with the good cover
) for $10. PQ and sound were pretty good... so it would depend on the extras if I'll double-dip.

I think a lot of the documentary is just things like art galleries and storyboards. If that's the case then those things really won't take up that much space and it should fit onto a single side of a DVD.

For me, an improved (not marginal) anamorphic transfer equals a sale, with or without a documentary. A 2nd disc of extras would certainly be welcomed as well.

If the documentary is on there, this gets a big 
from me. If not, I'll have to weigh in if it's worth it to upgrade. For one thing, I'm sure the cover will be a hell of a lot better than the one that's available now!

They could probably fit it on the flip of a DVD-18 if they removed the commentary over the 42 min. storyboards and just made it frame by frame. Of course that would cut the original doc, but it is Uni so it's not improbable.
Then again they could fit the whole thing on by increasing compression. The video for the documentary shoot doesn't look the best to begin with (but it could be just the quality of the presentation on LD).
