Sony/MGM 5 Gangster Noir Titles 10.18.05

Nothing has hashed out yet, but this is what I found.

from charles h at the HTF

DVDEmpire.com announced that Sony/MGM will be releasing 5 gangster titles on 9/6: LET 'EM HAVE IT (1935), I, MOBSTER (1958), PRETTY BOY FLOYD (1960), and two Anthony Mann titles--T-MEN (1947) and RAW DEAL (1948). Being "Sony/MGM", I am more than a little suspicious (I, MOBSTER was in CinemaScope once upon a time), but the two Mann titles (both released on dvd in pd versions) should be cause for enthusiasm--based upon what MGM did with the dvd of HE WALKED BY NIGHT (co-directed by Mann). Has anyone seen any other solicitations or formal announcements of these titles?

They're not from 'Sony/MGM' unfortunately, they're from Sony Music (Video) and will probably be no more than the usual PD standard fare.

I have the Mann titles on the Roan set - might be interested if there is an improvement in picture quality, or some substantive extras.

Hmmmm... Have the VCI editions of the Mann titles. Guess it's a wait and see approach with this news.

Allmovie.com claims they're coming out October 18th, from "Sony Wonder".

Those covers seem influenced by the Criterion Collection "Killers" cover.

I wonder how they compare to the Roan Group film noir trilogy (T-Men, Raw Deal & He Walked By Night.)

Any reviews?

Just wondering if there's anyone that knows the quality of these releases? I'd just like to know as I really want to own Raw Deal and T-Men, but am not sure if I should hold out for another release down the line. Thanks.

I purchased Raw Deal and for a budget release the picture quality is quite acceptable except for the night scenes which are very dark even when adjusted for contrast. No extras.

Thanks for responding

Thanks for the heads-up. Just wondering, though, how does the picture quality compare to the other film noir releases like the Fox Film Noir series or the Warner Brothers Film Noirs? I figure if the picture quality is at least as decent as the Universal titles released a couple years back (This Gun For Hire, Criss Cross, Black Angel, Big Clock), then I'll definetly pick these up. I'm just a little concerned cause I've picked up a lot of bargain bin film noirs and found them to be nearly unwatchable because of the poor picture quality.

An Amazon reviewer had this to say:

Don't let the discounted price and the Sony label fool you. The transfers of these classics are no masters at all & look like shit plain and simple. Speckles and jumping images abound throughout all the 5 movies.Worst of all, "I mobster", originally in Cinemascope, is reformated in full screen and "Raw Deal" is running at wrong speed. Avoid at all costs.

I have yet to see these, but would love to see some specs from a reputable source...wonder why dvdbeaver hasn't got a pic up yet?
