I'm just trying to blind buy this, loved Squid and the Whale, love Chris Eigeman, love the concept..but have yet to find it in store.

Had a really fun morning trying to find it before ordering at Amazon. Went into Border's on State which had two copies which they had just sold, then went to Border's at North and Clybourn where I began looking. As I made my way toward the computer, an employee was already on the phone looking for it for another customer. Then made my way to Best Buy just in case (they said their computer shows 9/5 as a release date) where yet another customer was looking for the same thing.

Anyone else get more excited about picking something up when it's actually harder to find?

I thought about trying to find it at HMV today, here in Ontario. I should just call them. I'm sure Best Buy and Future Shop won't have it, because it's not listed on their sites.

It's funny to me that I read the beginning of this thread back when it was created months ago. At the time I had no idea who Noah Baumbach was, and since this was a Criterion release, there's no way I'd be getting it when it came out, so I tend to ignore that kind of stuff. At those prices, I'd rather rent or wait until I can get one really cheap someday. (crosses fingers)

Anyway, I bought The Squid And The Whale a few weeks ago, and thought it was great. I think I've probably watched it 3 or 4 times already. So now I know who he is, I saw this thread, and thought "Oh yeah, Noah Baumbach! Gotta read the thread again."

So, in the queue it goes...

Best buy told my friend that it'd been pushed back to Sept. 5th. Was there a recall or something. It looks like Borders has them in stock. Anyone know?

I got mine from Amazon last wednesday. I've watched the flick and all the extras, and there's no reason to recall it (and certainly no recall is underway). I've been to Best Buy. Shitty selection. Don't go by their availability, or what those underpaid, grammatically-challenged clerks might tell ya.

It's been years since I've seen this flick, and though I adore "The Squid and the Whale", I sorta wondered how "Kicking" would stand up. I loved it all over again! It's not as accomplished or mature as "Squid", but I can certainly understand someone preferring "Kicking" should it speak more to their own experience. Although I had some (minor) doubts and considered Netflixing this film before purchasing it, I am not regretting it at all... in fact, I'm ready to watch it again!

the Cookie Man!

that's all I remember from this movie---a guy dropping flat on the floor while he bemused friends stand there wondering what or who is the cookie man.

just thinking about that cracks me up (inside, where it counts).

although no one line from a movie makes me laugh more than "aw, the answer was Ipswich clams."

Bill Simmons from ESPN2 chimed in on "Kicking and Screaming:

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2...simmons/060901

Kicking & Screaming
One of my top 20 favorite movies of all-time ... and it's finally out on a Criteron DVD, no less! Yes, that deserved an exclamation point. Everyone mistakenly believes that "Singles" and "Reality Bites" were the defining Gen X movies, and maybe they were to some degree (especially the music). But "Kicking & Screaming" was the best Gen X movie -- by far, actually -- and unlike the other two, it still holds up. The only reason the DVD happened was because it's Noah Baumbach's first movie and he made a big splash with "The Squid and The Whale" last year.

A couple of additional notes:

A. I will never understand why Josh Hamilton didn't become a bigger star; nobody else could have played Grover. It's the kind of part Ben Affleck or Dermot Mulroney would have just botched to smithereens back in the day.

B. What if I told you that Ari's wife from Entourage gets naked in this movie? Is that something you might be interested in?

C. This isn't just the best movie to capture that weird year after college when nobody knows what they're doing with their life, as far as I can ascertain, it's the ONLY movie like that.

D. The fact that some people confuse this movie with the insufferable Will Ferrell soccer comedy from last year genuinely injures my soul.

And she looks spectacular, not all harsh and jagged like she looks now.

Funny thing - in Old School, she played the wife of Will Ferrel, who was in the other Kicking & Screaming... life's a circle.

If she shows up on Lost I'll start getting worried...

I still haven't seen this anywhere. I didn't see it at Best Buy today, when I picked up Seven Samurai. I saw the Brazil re-release, though.

Sorry, but when Parker Posey is in a film, I'm incapable of noticing anyone else. I don't care how naked Ari's wife gets, she's just stealing valuable screen time away from Parker. And that's just wrong. On SO many levels.

I watched this for the first time last week and really enjoyed it. Reading through this thread and some of the quotes and having a lot of the funny scenes and lines come back to me has got me thinking about picking it up.

I picked this up as a blind buy and kind of hated it. I mean, I understand the feeling of that dreaded year post college, but it just really didn't do much for me.

The Squid and the Whale was good, though.
