Original Star Wars Trilogy Being Re-Released On DVD...The Non-SEs -- September 12th!

From a post at the Home Theater Forum:

"This was just posted on the Classic Horror Film Board by David Colton, editor of USA TODAY:

Original Star Wars back: Han Solo shoots first! (Again...) We're reporting tomorrow that Lucas is releasing the three ORIGINAL Star Wars films -- without the digital tweaks and effects -- on DVD after all. And, once again, Han Solo will be shown shooting first.

I had a bit of this wrong in the original posting, so lemme try again:

-- As we all know, in the original STAR WARS, Han Solo pulls his gun and shoots Greedo in the Cantina scene.

-- When the film was restored and digitally tweaked for a new theatrical run, Lucas added a moment where Greedo fires first, misses, and then Solo shoots Greedo. As if it was self-defense.

-- Fans objected, and when the film hit DVD in 2004, Lucas tweaked it yet AGAIN, and this time Solo and Greedo shot simultaneously.

-- In the upcoming DVD (due in September), the original scene is back. Greedo warns about Jabba, Solo tries to wave him off and then pulls his gun and shoots Greedo dead.

By the way, the story says the transfer of the 'original' version will not be as pristine and scrubbed as the restored DVDs. In fact, at one point there was talk the originals no longer existed.

Anyhow, once we publish (in USA TODAY), tomorrow, I'll post the entire story.

Not that I believe any of this, but it makes no sense that the original version would not be just as cleaned up.

The post over at Classic Horror Film Board also says that these will be two-disc sets.

I want to believe this, and it sounds legitimate (the editor of USA Today is pretty reputable), but it sounds too good to be true. He also specifies that every enhancement will be removed and they really will be the "originals."

I wouldn't believe any of this until you hear a direct quote from Lucas himself.

I can't believe that Lucas would do a 180 on these after his self-satisfied stance on the new editions, unless it involved the potential of mountains of cash, and he's already forced everyone to buy his crappy "upgrades". I just happened to transfer my laserdiscs of the originals to dvd this past weekend, and realized how spoiled we've become - those laserdisc tranfers looked like public domain bargain bin specials by comparison! He'd have to clean those up a little to make them even passable on dvd.

If it's true then:

if it's not then:

It kind of makes sense though. If he was planning all along to put them out in a HD format, why not hit DVD first then the HD format(s).

I guess we'll wait until tomorrow.

Yeah, the lightsabers will have a higher contrast in ESB and ROTJ, and the score won't be reversed in the rears for ANH.

Yeah, that should be enough to sustain another few years of SW bitching.

But, yes, I do. But not regularly, and not only. I haven't had a beer for about 2 - 3 weeks now.

Please note, I did not ask nor do I care about your beer preferences.

Choice. It's a cool thing.
