Sure he has. He's a great filmmaker and he has a lot to say about his movies and film in general. Thing is, he doesn't really have a reputation for making stoner comedies or relationship movies. Nor has he ever said - to my knowledge, anyway - that he's a huge fan of Kevin Smith or Chasing Amy. Kevin Smith has never made a horror film of any kind, nor is he ever made a big deal about being a big fan of Tobe Hooper or TCM2. He might be. He might have a few good observations on the movie. But I'd be willing to bet that there are a whole lot of other filmmakers - people whose work shows the influence of movies like TCM2 - that would give a much more informative commentary. That is the only problem I have with him doing a commentary. The bottom line, though, is that he's getting paid by MGM/Sony to do these commentaries (he's got one on the upcoming Roadhouse SE as well). And rightfully so. He will help sell DVDs. People who want a Joe Bob Briggs commentary are probably going to buy the disc whether it has it or not. Kevin Smith has a lot of fans that would buy this just for the commentary - regardless of whether or not they've seen (or liked) the movie.

I just signed up here and was about to repost my viewaskew.com post, but Donnacha beat me to it

As for Kevin being paid to do the commentary, nope. He wants to do it because he loves the film.

And if Tobe Hooper was a huge fan of CHASING AMY and wanted to do a commentary on it, why not? I don't see what's so wrong with directors doing commentaries on films they love, especially if they're good speakers.

Just read the post from Vincent Pereira...

It's a good point. I still say there are a zillion more qualified people to do the commentary, but a good point made.

Well, I can respect and live with that. I just hope there's also a cast/crew group commentary as well.

Vincent, welcome aboard. got a question for you. Is the reason, Kevin and Scott are doing the Road house commentary, is because of the comment on the clerks 10th anniversery dvd?
You are always give me a good read, and could add alot to the forum. (oh, and is that dogma extended edtion just a rumor, or a fact?)

I still think Joe Bob Briggs should have a commentary track on this dvd.

Well, I'll listen to a source close Kevin Smith. Nice to have a little insight on exactly why he's doing the commentary. Also nice to hear he's not doing it for the money. I still don't think he's the best person to do this track, but I won't beat that dead horse anymore.

I'd much rather have a Kevin Smith commentary than a Carrot Top commentary like on "Rules of Attraction". At least Kevin is a film buff, and a fan of the movie he will be doing a commentary for.

There will be. A track with Caroline Williams, Bill Moseley, and Tom Savini has already been recorded. Most likely, there will also be a Tobe Hooper commentary, too.

Do you mean to say you spent all this time complaining and didn't even read the initial post where the extras were announced?

And I bet y'all dollars to donuts that Joe Bob Briggs signed some kind of exclusivity deal as part of his series of releases for Elite. I would think, since they're marketing a whole sub-line by way of him, they wouldn't want him out there doing other commentaries for movies that weren't in their line.

So, back to serious questions ... any word on Kinky Friedman's involvement? hopehopehope.

PS: Nice to see you around, Vincent. You gonna be around the festivities next week?

Actually, Media Blasters have released a number of discs with Briggs commentaries, even after the Elite discs were released. If nothing else, I doubt Elite has enough money (or a large enough catalog) to entice Briggs to turn down all other commentary offers.

Said it jokingly. I'm a big fan... but my admiration sure doesn't pay the bills.

Just for clarification, the initial (edited) post read "almost a dozen members of the cast and crew... are all contributing their memories in new interviews and/or feature commentaries." I was voicing my interest in a group commentary track (not just 1 or 2 people) in addition to or instead of single interviews/commentaries- they are two different animals to me. The only commentary that was confirmed was the Smith one. Without rehashing everything, the only reason I was upset with it was because I though they had hired him over someone else I felt was more suited to the task. As pointed out, he is doing it for free, so I'll live with that.

Smith, on the other hand, has made a bunch of movies, none of which were horror. Off-hand, I believe he has never worked with any of the principals involved in TCM 2, nor has he shown any expertise that I've seen regarding the film or its players. You can therefore safely categorize him with thousands of other directors with the identical creditials.

Who sounds more qualified?

Beyond that, the idea that a filmmaker is inherently more qualified to do a commentary over someone who is "just a person" (because they have committed the grave crime of never being a director) is absurd. The general experience of having been a director gives a person no special qualities. I'll take a well-informed and well-connected ("just a") person who has long career as a writer and TV host (hint: he knows how to entertain and inform through his spoken voice speaking his self-written words) for a commentary any day over someone who thinks that have earned themselves a gold star because they made some movies that have nothing to do with the film on which they will be commenting. There are a whole lot of people who never directed a movie in their lives who have much more to say, and can say it in a more interesting way, than probably the majority of directors out there.

DJ

My mistake I did not know that he was involved in the production. Had I known that, then yes I would agree that he would be more qualified.

Fair enough.

Anybody know whether Briggs is perhaps upset to have been cut out?

I dig the raw meat cover from the 30th Anniversary Edition more.

Joe Bob Briggs should have a piece of the commentary pie. Why don't they get Al Pacino and Robert Deniro together to do a commentary on this while they're at it. It sure would be interesting to hear what they would say about this movie.

I think this should be the first commentary that Steven Spielberg does.

He and Hooper are surely buddies after Poltergeist.

Yeah how dare Silent fucking Bob take Deniro and Pacino's commentary off of this disc!

All things considered, I'd rather have a Tobe Hooper commentary on Poltergeist than Chainsaw 2. (Probably less likely than getting a Stephen King commentary on Kubrick's Shining, which would probably be my #1 most wanted commentary track.)

Man, I want this DVD more than any other DVD coming up this year. possibly 3 commentary tracks, for an older horror movie. I'm a sucker for older movie commentaries, and especially horror and childhood favorites. Also a fan of multiple commentary tracks. The more, the better. I'll most likely double dip the original, because of the new commentary and documentary I've never seen.
