This set will represent a conflict for me. I'm a total packaging whore, and I love nice sets, but I generally draw the line at things that won't fit on my DVD shelf. Figurines, briefcases, alien head sculptures and the like I don't want, but usually I can get all the discs without getting those kinds of trinkets, which usually add a good $10-20 (or in some cases a lot more) to the price of the set. Not sure I'm going to do here. I want all five discs in a nice package (something like the LOTR EEs), but the briefcase is a little too much for me. I think there are enough people like me that maybe some decision-makers will realize this and release the 5 disc set sans the briefcase and the (no offense) toys for about $30-35.

I'm not the only person that doesn't consider these extras to be "toys" (believe me, I have toys on display also). These are not things meant to be played with, they're meant to be shown off. They say that I appreciate this film, and what it stands for, enough to make room for a few extra little bits and pieces that help set the mood of the film in my living room/home theater.

Well said, and I feel almost the exact same way. I would find it incredibly boring to have just shelves and shelves of only DVDs. Half of the fun of collecting for me is to have something to display (like a scary Ape Head or A Neo Bust.)

From the others point of view, however, some people are truly space limited and/or are not interested in packaging and/or do not have the $$$ to fork over for a briefcase, for example. I feel that if you don't want the extra packaging, you should at least be able to get the DVD content in a more typical type of release. This is why such things as best buy bonus discs piss me off so much. I'm not going to pay $30 more for a box set at Best Buy than, say DDD (Star Trek sets come to mind). However, I truly want that extra 10 minutes of bonus features that comes on those discs. I was happy to see that the POTC blu-ray releases include ALL bonus material from every release including the store-specific bonus discs.

Yeah, well I respectfully disagree. If you want the workprint (I don't), you're forced to buy a bunch of space-wasting junky crap. I find it difficult to believe that a briefcase containing a miniature origami unicorn figurine, a miniature replica spinner car, collector's photographs, letter from Ridley Scott will enhance your viewing pleasure.

I'm sure displaying an origami unicorn would prove to everyone that you're the biggest Blade Runner fan in the world, but there are people like me who don't want a bunch of knickknacks cluttering up the shelves, and just want the damn discs.

^ I hear what you're saying, thats the reason I've stayed away from the giant ape head set of Planet of the Apes, but this set presents more of a conflict (I've never actually seen Blade Runner, so this will be a "highly educated" blind buy for me) seeing as I could probably do without the unicorn and such, but the autograph got me hooked...its pretty rare to find such a cheap avenue to getting a top director's autograph with insurance that its authentic (this is on the assumption a movie studio wouldn't take the risk of forging them).

Maybe not the specific viewing pleasure itself, but the overall enjoyment of the idea of the film.

Is it really so hard to believe that there are a lot of folks that feel the way I do? Why do you think all these collectibles exist in the first place? Because people want to experience the film, beyond just viewing the film.

Should the studio offer the workprint without the extra goodies? Probably so. But I think the price is worth paying to get the complete experience.

Put me in the camp of having no use for a bunch of Hollywood knick-knacks.

When I first got into DVD, I would always buy the super-deluxe edition with the odd-size packaging and all the junk included. As I acquired more titles, I quickly ran out of space, and divested of these unneccesary encumbrances. (I made a pretty penny on some of these, like The Wicker Man box to name just one).

Today, I value a neat, efficient economy of space, with my titles displayed spine out on a slim bookshelf type of rack.

That said, I would definitely buy the 5-disc version of Blade Runner if it came in a digipack. If not, the 4-discer will suffice. (No, I have no interest in going BluRay or HD, but that's a whole different thread).

I agree with both things but might be tempted to get that box if i can find it for around $40.
If not i wont be too angry seeing as how that awesome 4-disk set will be plenty for me and it should be available for less than $25

I have to be put in the camp of "not wanting the junk". I am conflicted, though. Blade Runner is one of my top five movies of all time and I really, really, really want that 5th disc.

My problem is that my wife also happens to be a woman. if I lived alone I would have no problem with finding a nook for my briefcase set (as well as have a lot more porn). My wife puts up with enough having me display my 600+ DVDs in the living room, so I don't want to push it. If I did buy the briefcase I hope all 5 discs come in one smaller digipack, because the case would end up in a back closet shelf.

Does anyone know if the "final cut" version has the extra violence or not?

If I get this it'll be either the 2 disc or the 4 disc. Have no need for extra junk.

Yeah, it looks like the briefcase is about the size of 2 sets next to each other, with the left side having an indented area for the set and the to-, er, collectibles, on the right. That white thing with the picture (film cell?) goes in the top pocket (with the white button) on the briefcase, and I guess the cards go in the top folder.

Put me down for the briefcase! I love junk. In fact, I need more collector's sets. My Office Space collector's set and my big oversized Eraserhead box need some companions on top of my shelf.

first, amazon has their pre-order up for the 5 disc: $54.99 w/free shipping.

second, is anyone else concerned with 3 versions of the film on one disc - disc 3 of the 4 & 5 disc releases? unless their non anamorphic or they use seamless branching the quality will be crap.

I am thinking either the 3 versions will co-exist via seamless branching, or Warner might try and make this a dual-layered, double-sided disc.

I don't know - Blade Runner was a groundbreaking film with regards to its visual effects and its depiction of a dark and gritty future - but I feel like 5 versions of this film is overkill. It's a good movie - but even at the low, low price of $55 - I feel like it's too much to pay. I'll stick with the two-disc set on sale for $15 or even the four-disc set for $25.
