Why is that? I've never had a dvd rot or anything, and some I do have sealed for a year plus.

I think it's because air or something was trapped inside when it was made. I think Heathers also had this problem.

Maybe I didn't fully read the rules, but some films people have been listing don't fit under the "horror" banner, technically, so I really don't think they should count. The only two I can mention, since I haven't read through most lists, are Hard Candy and The Brave One. I fail to see how either of these films can be classified as horror. They are, if anything, thrillers which doesn't automatically make them horror.

Just a thought.

from the rules
What qualifies? Use your own personal judgment about what you consider to be part of the horror genre. If you think "Jaws", "Se7en" "Godzilla", "The Nightmare Before Christmas", etc. qualifies as horror then count them. If you feel otherwise, don't. If you're unsure, ask...that's what this thread is here for! Horror documentaries, horror/comedies, sci-fi horror, creature features, Masters of Horror (yeah, they're considered movies) silents, made-for-TV movies, etc. count. TV shows DON'T count! See post #2 of this thread for more info.

There's a couple of people who have decided to scrutinize others' lists, but I doubt anyone else is too concerned if a movie rides the line.

Most people use IMDB as a guide line. If horror is one of the major genre lists then it's accepted.

Yea, it's not like I care that much, I just found it a little strange that some people were including things that I doubt anyone would consider horror.

I think for the most part, common sense prevails. If it's close no one will say anything. If you list something like E.T., like someone did last year, then I'm sure someone will mention it.

Hard Candy was brought up and people said it was fine. Don't remember if it was this or last years thread.

Damn, I take a couple days break from this thread and return to total fucking chaos!

My two cents and that's all your gonna hear from me on this matter:

The questionable lists don't bother me in the least and I'm the one who started this challenge, the poor bastard who'll be tallying up the totals at the end, as well as the person offering the Amazon GC to the winner. And by that I mean if it doesn't bother me why should it anyone else? It's more than obvious this is on the honor system and if someone is going to cheat they're gonna do it and there's not a whole helluva lot anyone can do about it. It's simply your word against theirs.

Let's say hypothetically someone is padding their lists (NOT accusing anyone!) simply to acquire a $25 Amazon GC, then that person(s) probably has some deep-seeded psychological issues to begin with! It's totally on their conscious and making accusations against them will only lead to higher stress levels and taking away your enjoyment factor as well as others.

If I would have known that offering a bigger prize would have lead to this, obviously I'd have scrapped the idea completely. In fact, I think I'll take the advice of others and do just that for next year's challenge. At least that way there's a possibility this could actually be about having fun as it was originally intended. Thank god I didn't carry through with my original intention of offering a $50 GC!

I'm sure if anyone lists something inappropriate, the Official Horror Movie Challenge Police will investigate.

Chad, I appreciate all your hard work and I think whoever wins should pass on the Amazon GC. You deserve to keep it for putting this together and giving us all a place to talk about horror and do these marathons. Its a shame some choose to spend their time whining instead of watching movies, but bitterness is unavoidable. I think we all know how EdTheRipper and DarkGod feel and I hope they'll stop beating a dead horse. Again, thanks for your time and effort, its much appreciated.

I agree, we don't need any prizes. The reward is the enjoyment we get all month.

Anyone who wins should tell Chad to keep his GC.

I added Hard Candy to my list, though it is not necessarily textbook horror. I saw that others had listed it and didn't think much of it. I highly doubt it matters, since I'm not using it to pad my gigantic list of 4 films.

I'm so excited about the challenge, and I'm even making plans for next year (I'm thinking of only doing DTV movies next year, what do you think? Can I do it without my brain exploding?) so I'm just grateful for that. I won't win and I know this, I just want to have fun.

My goal for next year is to get though the movies that I don't get to this year.

You're SO cheating.

I never thought I'd get this many movies in, my original goal was 31, and I'm already at 20 more than that!

I also have some questionable films listed, and I know not everyone considers them horror, but I got them in the horror section so if anyone fights me, I'm ready.

Everyone is focusing on the prize saying it would be silly to lie in order to win a prize, but I don't think that's the point. I don't really think the point is the gift, some people just like to win and they're so competitive that they want to win every competition. I'm not saying anyone is cheating because there's no way any of us can know that, but I think what people are saying is that some people are lying in order to win, and I don't think not offering a prize is going to help that. It's the same reason people fight on the internet and people compete to get higher post counts on some message boards, with some people it's all about winning. With me it's about watching more horror than anyone in their right mind would watch and enjoying my favorite genre.

Seems like having 25% of your movies being a lie is a pretty big deal.

Chad, I don't see how this is anywhere close to how bad the fighting was last year. That didn't get very far before people were going insane.

I also wouldn't mind doing a Sci-fi challenge in the spring if there's an interest. I can run it unless someone else really wants to run it.

My own two cents on Hard Candy: If a movie was covered by both Fangoria and Rue Morgue, then I'd say it can be counted as horror, which Hard Candy certainly was. Not to mention it got him the job of directing 30 Days of Night, not Fracture or some other "thriller".

No need to take it so seriously, its for fun. I really don't understand why anyone would give a rats ass about a film someone else decided to include on their list. It does not affect you at all.
