I'm excited for this, but I would like to throw in the idea of the wild card thing. Maybe, for instance, you can watch 2 TV Christmas Specials (live on TV, or on DVD), in addition to the wild cards (which could be used for things like shorts, cartoons, etc...)

bluetoast 10-07-07 12:47 PM

I'm a little late to start the October challenge...pumped for this one though.

The Monkees 10-07-07 03:16 PM

Well as last year movies and TV shows count, although maybe the wild card thing could work with shorts and whatnot.

MTRodaba2468 10-07-07 03:50 PM

Well, I'm doing the October Movie challenge (and as of right now, three movies in seven days; plenty of room for improvement), I'll probably give this one a try, too.

Darth Maher 10-07-07 04:06 PM

I'm in!

There is no need for a wild card option since all movies, tv shows, shorts, and cartoons count. I am pumped for this and will be participating. I wonder if it will be kept at 50 or will we raise the number on what you watch. BTW that's an earlier start date, I thought it doesn't start until Thanksgiving day?

RobCA 10-07-07 07:20 PM

I'm in, I really enjoyed (and won!) last year's, can't wait to do this again.

Last year's started on November 20th, not on Thanksgiving.

This is another one I missed last year because I hadn't found this forum yet, and have been excited about it ever since (I really hope you do the Academy Award one also). As much fun as I'm having with the Horror movie one, I'm already getting a bit sick of horror movies after only like 12 watched, so this one will definitely be more fun for me.

Starting last year I started it the Monday before Thanksgiving, since Thanksgiving movies are allowed. The first year it started the first of December and it made no sense to include Thanksgiving movies if we started after Thanksgiving, so now it starts the Monday before hand.

Also I never really said shorts counted, but I see no reason why they can't. I would like to raise the number since I hit 67 last year with no problem, but that's up to everyone else.

thecrazydude 10-08-07 02:04 PM

I'm in also. I am currently doing the Horror challenge. Looking forward to the Holiday Challenge!

Bluelitespecial 10-08-07 02:18 PM

I think you could raise it to 60-75 and everyone would be fine with it. My goal is to get to at least 50.

mijorico 10-08-07 03:41 PM

In my opinion, this and the Academy Awards challenge are the easiest to participate in, as well as being the funnest. I'm not big on horror movies, so this month's challenge doesn't really interest me.

I'll have to start earlier on this contest this year. I waited last year because I didn't want to run through too many of my favorites before Christmas, and then ended up having to cram a lot in at the end. This time, I think I'll just re-watch them if I'm done too early.

FantasticVSDoom 10-08-07 03:59 PM

This is the one Ive been looking forward to this year and ready to go...

DVDMagic 10-09-07 06:28 AM

Currently participating in the Horror challenge and loving it.

Looking forward to this one also. I think taking part in these helps broaden the horizon of what I watch based on other peopels viewing habits etc.

Now back to the scary movies....

Trevor 10-09-07 07:30 AM

Early in my DVD addiction, I started collecting Christmas movies and shows. Every year I plan to watch as many as possible, but rarely get thru that many. Having this challenge will help, sweet.

Can't believe I never checked out any of these challenge threads before.....

Cardsfan111 10-09-07 09:14 AM

I may be in for this challenge for well. Hard to think about what I'll be watching in November/December, while I'm wrapped up in the Horror challenge going on this month!

LBCrazyFool 10-09-07 09:27 AM

Count me in. I enjoyed it last year and should easily beat the 57 I watched in the last challenge.

The Man with the Golden Doujinshi 10-09-07 09:29 AM

I'm not really sure I have that many to watch for this.

wlverinefactor 10-09-07 09:33 AM

I'm unsure of how many I have as well but I could always do tv episodes since those seem to work. For the last few years I've been going to Europe at the beginning of December but I'm planning a big summer vacation so I'm skipping it this year so I can't wait to partake in this challenge. I've never seen any of the Christmas classics either :)

Trevor 10-09-07 10:13 AM

Counting TV episodes, I'm sure I have dozens if not hundreds of possible entries. Does anyone know of a site that has Christmas episodes listed?

For more obscure holiday titles, here are some that I culled from some googling and searching the past holiday challenge threads.

Thanksgiving

Planes, Trains, and Automobile
Pieces of April

The Ice Storm

The Myth of Fingerprints
Son-in-Law
Tadpole

The Daytrippers
Alice's Restaurant
Avalon
Scent of a Woman
Squanto: A Warrior's Tale
What's Cooking?

The Horn Blows at Midnight

The Monkees 10-09-07 12:34 PM

Would someone be willing to make me a nice little banner for this challenge. Sort of like the one on front page of the horror movie challenge. The reason I ask is because I suck using Photoshop and I would like to spice up the challenge this year.

Darkgod 10-09-07 12:36 PM

So it has to have some snippet of Holidays in there? Cause i woudnt expect batman returns, mighty joe young or assualt on precint 13 as one? Just curious incase I do this

Nice list  (although I asked about Hannah and Her Sisters last year, and was told that it didn't count)... a few other films I have that qualify are:

Arthur 2: On the Rocks
Christmas Evil
The Ref
Rent
Scrooged

Darkgod, I don't know the other two, but Batman Returns counts! :)

I'm really looking forward to this. I saved my list of what I watched last year; I just need to finish going through all the TV show sets I've bought this year, and add any qualifying episodes to my ever-growing list. -eek-

Here's a few more.

Star Wars Holiday Special
Jack Frost(the horror one, the children one, the mst3k one)
Not sure about Jack Frost 2

wordtoyamotha 10-09-07 02:15 PM

I'm in!

I take it there will be a separate thread for the lists?

That star wars holiday special is the worst thing next to redoing the series, and greedo shooting first that George Lucas has ever done.

Harrison Fords pay day had to be rediculous.

Trevor 10-10-07 06:22 AM

I've edited the list back in post #21.

It is not for obvious holiday films like Scrooged and other things with Christmas words in the title. It is a list for movies that fit the challenge criteria but may not be obvious from the title.

Edit to add: Any thought to extending the time period to January 1st? I really don't want to watch New Year's movies until after Christmas.

Bluelitespecial 10-11-07 09:47 AM

The more I think about it, I think a wild card option could work, becuase it would be a way to include various holiday specials that are on tv during christmas time.

But those already count. At least I hope they do, because I counted some of them last year. :D I don't think "wild cards" are necessary with this challenge, unless of course, someone can think of one thing we could use them for, that doesn't already count. I can't come up with anything myself.

Rob

Gobear 10-11-07 10:58 AM

Other non-obvious holiday films:
Christmas
The Lion in Winter (takes place during Christmas 1183)
The Long Kiss Goodnight
Robin and the Seven Hoods
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

New Year's Eve
200 Cigarettes
Strange Days

Rob

Exactly... This Challenge is a lot more liberal than the Halloween one.

mijorico 10-11-07 03:33 PM

Couple of lists of non-traditional Christmas movies I found on the net. I already know that some count but I haven't seen them all, so I can't vouch for the eligibility. Just thought I'd post them for debate.

Also, what about Funny Farm? A fairly substantial portion occurs around Christmas.

12. Rocky IV
11. Long Kiss Goodnight
10. Love, Actually
9. Ghostbusters II
8. Lethal Weapon
7. The Ice Harvest
6. Better Off Dead
5. Die Hard
4. Less Than Zero
3. Trading Places
2. Edward Scissorhands
1. Gremlins

ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
BEWARE MY LOVELY (1952)
THE LADY IN THE LAKE (1946)
NIGHT OF THE HUNTER (1955)
THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST (1967)
MILLIONS (2004)
THE DEAD (1987)

Brazil
Eyes Wide Shut
Cast Away

terrycloth 10-11-07 05:38 PM

For what it's worth, Edward Scissorhands is another one I asked about last year, but was told it didn't count. I thought it should have, but oh well. :)

I was wondering the same thing. As long as we are including Thanksgiving, we might as well include New Years, right? And it's only one week later.

And Trevor, I'm going to take advantage of your OCD and let you list all the eligible/questionable movies so I can make up a queue for myself like I did for Halloween. :D

The Monkees 10-12-07 02:47 PM

Rocky IV was brought up last year. I am a huge fan of the Rocky series, but this movie does not count. The main fight takes place on Christmas day, but there is no telling how long he trained for. He could have been training for months ahead of time, which means only about 20 minutes of the movie takes place during the holiday season.

Also, I'm not sure about Ghostbusters II, I know it takes place during New Years Eve at the end, but I can't remember if it's just that time of the movie, or if it takes place during that time the whole movie.

The Monkees 10-12-07 02:57 PM

The official rules have been posted on the first post.

Most excellent.

This will be my first year doing this. However, every year, I "vow" to watch more holiday movies during the season and I only watch a few. But taking part in this "challenge" will give me the incentive to watch more.

Can we talk about extending it to the midnight at the end of January 1st?
