I guess these are eligible since they had theatrical releases on my end of the world:
Battlestar Galactica and Buck Rogers, and then there are the familiar favourites: Superman, Star Wars, Goonies, Back to the Future, Indiana Jones, Roger Moore Bond flicks, etc

Explorers is my main one, because as a 10-year-old, I never appreciated how the movie falls apart completely once they board the alien ship.
I also have fond memories of Tron, and appreciate it now for its technical achievements more than anything else.

Just off the top of my head...movies I enjoyed before I turned 10 years old. I was born in 1984
Karate Kid 1,2,3
Blank Check
The Wizard
Edward Scissorhands
The Lion King
Batman
Home Alone
Christmas Story
Beauty & The Beast
Clue
They Live
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
National Lampoon's Vacation
Rocky 1-3
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory
Ghostbusters 1/2
The Breakfast Club
The Terminator (Yes, I watched this as a very young lad)
Robocop (see above)
Trading Places (first R movie I ever watched)
I'm sure I am forgetting a ton though.
You know, I think watching this countless times as a kid made me turn a blind eye to the ending after watching it as an adult.

we got HBO in the mid 70s, when I was still under 10, and a lot of these films made a huge impression on me and were the spark of a lifelong passion
Prisoner Of Second Avenue
Phantom Of The Paradise
Paper Moon
The Stepford Wives
I also have fond memories of seeing titles of dubious merit like these theatrically and loving the experience- I hope to never be without these, 'cause I still enjoy them
King Kong('76)
Prophecy
StarCrash
Moonraker
The Amityville Horror
And how I wish I had these on disc
Almost Summer
Jennifer('78)
Goldengirl
Wanda Nevada
The Brink's Job
California Dreaming
King Of The Gypsies
Looking For Mr Goodbar

Some favorites that I now own and watch whenever I darn well feel like it:
The Magic Sword
The Great Escape
Old Yeller
Savage Sam
...and almost every other non-musical Disney film
Where The Boys Are
633 Squadron
McLintock!
True Grit
Planet Of The Apes
ALL of the old Universal monster and other SF movies I loved from Saturday afternoon creature features. Gotta love the recent BB collections!
It could only get better if I had:
The Secret Invasion
A Distant Trumpet
Crack In The World
Palm Springs Weekend
And another vote for California Dreaming - with the closing credits music restored (my VHS tape has America's "California Dreaming" replaced with something else...)

Re: What movie you have to own from your childhood?
Wow, I love reading everyone's lists. What a nice mix.
From another baby boomer:
I recently watched a DVD of the first movie my father took me to see (and the first non-Disney movie I saw in a theater):
DEMETRIUS AND THE GLADIATORS - a very entertaining mix of sex, violence and religion. As a five-year-old I loved the gladiator action and star Victor Mature was already known to me from TV showings of ONE MILLION B.C.
Other theatrical releases I own from childhood (pre-adolescence):
THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD (DVD)
double bill of FLAME OVER INDIA and A DOG OF FLANDERS (both on VHS)
double bill of SWORD AND THE DRAGON and FRANKENSTEIN 1970 (one on VHS, the other on DVD, although I now have the original Russian version of SWORD AND THE DRAGON, known as ILYA MUROMETS, on DVD)
MR. BUG GOES TO TOWN (Fleischer animated feature) on VHS
THE LOST WORLD (1960, DVD)
JOURNEY TO THE CENTER OF THE EARTH (1959, DVD)
BEN-HUR (DVD)
DVDs I own of films I saw in theaters after I turned ten and began heavy-duty moviegoing in earnest:
JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS
BEACH PARTY
X-THE MAN WITH THE X-RAY EYES
THE LONGEST DAY
LAWRENCE OF ARABIA
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY
EL CID
THE GREAT ESCAPE
TV favorites from childhood:
KING KONG (1933)
SON OF KONG (1933)
MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949)
...tons of others

Re: What movie you have to own from your childhood?
For me it was MORGAN! I saw this on TV as a kid and really identified with the main character, to the point that I had to get a wool turtleneck sweater just like Morgan wore. I never saw the film again until it came out on DVD a few years ago. What a letdown. It didn't survive the test of time well.

As far as movies go, the ones I saw in my youth (teenager) and liked enough to want in my collection today (figuratively speaking) were Planet of the Apes and 2001: A Space Odyssey. -kd5-

Another "boomer" here. Movie wise here are some I had to have:
Tarzan (Johnny Weissmuller ones)
The Adventures of Robin Hood
Captain Blood
The Three Musketeers
At Swords Point
Against All Flags
Journey to the Center of the Earth
From the Earth to the Moon
*ALL* the Universal Monster films
Invasion of the Body Snatchers (original)
Three Stooges shorts
Laurel and Hardy shorts
Little Rascals/Our Gang shorts
50s/60s sci-fi/horror "B" films and "A" films too!
The list could go on for days...
Many, many, TV shows but the "grails" were:
Twilight Zone
Outer Limits
The Time Tunnel
Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea
Star Trek: TOS
The Invaders
The Addams Family
The Munsters
Hogan's Heroes
Batman (still waiting...)
Car 54 Where Are You?
Daniel Boone
F Troop
George of the Jungle
Jonny Quest
Get Smart
The Green Hornet (still waiting)
The Many Love of Dobie Gillie (still waiting)
The Man from U.N.C.L.E.
The Wild, Wild, West
Mission Impossible

Re: What movie you have to own from your childhood?
Wow.....boomer flashbacks here. The two biggest from my early years were JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS and those showings of the WIZARD OF OZ. My high school years without a doubt were all BULLITT. Did not hurt that my dad bought a 68 Charger R/T brand new. I was the fastest kid in high school.lol. I watch all three movies anytime I want thanks to home theater.
