Tonight a double feature on some lesser known serial killers:
-Tales of the Grim Sleeper (2014)
and
- 25 Cromwell Street Murders: Fred and Rose West (2014)

The Man with the Golden Doujinshi

A Nightmare on Elm Street is great to watch on Halloween because as someone that identifies with Freddy, a janitor at an elementary school, seeing trick or treaters brings up thoughts of "What Would Freddy Do?"

Suspira is classic Halloween material. With kills and chills, this one is sure to give grandma bad dreams for a few nights.

The weather, being rainy, with the moon only partially obscured by clouds got me back in the mood, so I turned on the TV and caught Dead Souls on Chiller, which also got me to 75. Only 25 more to go.

Ha! I tracked that down last year (or the year before) when I attempted at least one film per angel... had no idea there was a remake, though.

The Man with the Golden Doujinshi

I think Wes Craven does some good commentaries, in general. He'll talk about whatever it is that's the focus of the commentary but also other related topics.

He directed some of 80s Twilight Zone episodes and also did commentaries. I'd been skipping them but last night I was watching one of his season 2 episodes regarding Vietnam and there was some interesting talk between him and one of the other crew regarding their experiences with the draft at the time and since the commentary was recorded around 2004, I believe, they also brought up the Gulf war.

We watched Final Girls through Vudu, and our TV waited until the outtakes&bloopers-over-the-credits to wiggle the cables loose and create the "classic" VHS snow, haze, strobing and loss of picture.

It took nearly two minutes for me to think the check the cables... I just assumed it was a deliberate joke!

Yep. We're off to the theatre to watch (at least two-thirds of) the trilogy on the bigscreen.

I'm hoping to wildcard at least one somehow...

Is there an agreed-upon method to count It's thr Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown and Toy Story of Terror...? I won't argue that either should count as a full film on their own, but counting by pure TV rules seems overly stingy for those two.... and the first seems like there might be a Separate Rule already.

Today, as part of our on-going Universal run-through, we wound up in 1941 and The Wolf Man, which as luck would have it features BELA LUGOSI (as "Bela") which conveniently tied into today's sub-theme for his birthday. My daughter now reads the credits(!) and recognises many familiar names(!!), so she was excited to see "Bela" pop up. I tried to explain that while she didn't recognise Rains, she had heard him before, and that despite not having seen Chaney before he was arguably the 'third most important person' in these films.

At the end credits, we went down the list "Bela - second most important, Lon Chaney - number, and Claude Rains - probably the fourth." She turned to me, and said: "Daddy, it's missing one: the most important - KARLOFF." Yep, he wasn't in this one. "...why not?"

I thought it was traditionally allowed to count Pumpkin as a full entry. As far as Toy Story of Terror goes, I believe the regular TV rules still apply.

Seems reasonable.

I may ask for other opinions if available, as it was just pointed out that TSoT was released as a standalone Halloween item on Blu/DVD, though, so it's not just an episode or extra, but a Thing in its own right....

I love Larry Cohen but the It's Alive trilogy is really middle of the road stuff.

Great story. Can your daughter pronounce "Lugosi"? Because when I was about 7 or 8 (When reading his name in various books/magazines) I had no idea how to say his name.

It actually made its debut on broadcast television, not on home video, so it falls under the TV guidelines.

Got 2 movies in today..

First one was Let Us Prey..Opening sequence track had a John Carpenter vibe to it. Liam Cunningham was superb mysterious man. He can be either the devil or an angel. My only gripe, it was a bit hard to understand the Scottish & Irish talk with their accents. You need some subtitles to catch everything. Other than that, this was a very well made movie. Had some nice gore too. That police officer lady, Pollyanna Mclntosh, has a good resemblance of a Mila Jovovich.

I think I'm late with A Serbian Film

I have seen nothing like it..Torture with porn to another level. I was shocked on some of the scenes which also made me cringe. Anyhow, it did have entertain the whole time. Score!!

I think so, but it's been easier to just hunt "Bela" and "KARLOFF" (would have been "Boris", but he's sometimes just credited with a mononym). I'll ask her...

Having noticed others mention it, I thought I'd try and watch an apocalyptic thing today as well as just a vampire one, and Hulu had an oddity: From Inside. Set almost entirely on a train, animated sparsely and narrated by a single voice, perhaps the best way to describe it is "haunting" and "hypnotic". It came VERY close to toppling into religious allegory, and the plot was a bit thin, but there were undercurrents of delusion and hallucination that made it really rather interesting.

Meanwhile, Old Dracula with David Niven at Amazon is just bizarre... in a good way. It's firmly at the comedy end of vampires, but keeps descending into blaxploitation (and sexploitation) for no real reason at all. Fake fangs and camp galore, and oddly compelling. If you've ever wanted to hear Niven say "jive turkey," well...

Screened "Tales of Halloween", and I must say I kinda liked it!

Uneven as hell, but very entertaining.

A very loud thunderstorm ran through our neighborhood in the middle of it...perfect timing!

Other than "Trick 'r Treat"....any other good, polished short anthologies out there? Anyone see "A Christmas Horror Story"?

Two Orphan Vampires just shot to the top of my Jean Rollin list. I will questions his motives for zooming in on a dog that's supposed to be dead for several seconds that you can clearly see breathing and bobbing its head. Then I realized who I'm talking about and the contempt he had for second takes. That may work for Zombie Lake, but come on!

Okay then ...works for me.

There's also Jaws 19.

I watched the first one back in June of this year, I will be looking foward to watching part 2 today. Its been about 6 or 7 years since I last saw it so it will be pretty fresh.

I quite enjoyed it. I found it interesting that Lugosi was double-credited rather than the 'two roles' being bracketed together in some way. Hard to see how anyone could think that they're separate characters...

I couldn't sleep, so woke up in the middle of the night. Decided to work on the challenge, so caught Shadow of the Vampire on Chiller. It was an interesting take on how Nosferatu might have been made.
