DVD Talk Criterion Challenge Spine #12: List Thread
September is upon us, which means it’s time for the twelfth annual DVD Talk Criterion Challenge! If you’re already familiar with the Criterion Collection, then this is when you get to justify the purchases you made in July during Barnes & Noble’s annual 50% off sale and make sure you get your money’s worth out of your subscription to the Criterion Channel. For newcomers (welcome!), this will hopefully be your introduction to new areas of movies. Criterion’s mission statement reads:
That’s the spirit of the Collection, and also the spirit of this Challenge. This is the only DVD Talk challenge that emphasises disc supplements, because supplements are integral to the “Criterion treatment”, often referred to as “film school in a box”. [Fun fact: the very first ever commentary track was recorded by film historian Ronald Haver for Criterion’s 1984 LaserDisc release of King Kong!] For this challenge, we encourage you to spend more of your time on one movie’s supplements rather than rush off to the next movie. Watch those interviews. Listen to those commentary tracks. Read those essays. This month is all about deep dives!
What is eligible?
Optional Checklist

Re: DVD Talk Criterion Challenge Spine #12
First Time Viewing: 5
Television: 14
Streaming: 10
DVD: 2
Blu-ray: 9
Optional Checklist
Spoiler:
Aug 31.
1. Der Golem (1920), Criterion Channel--Karl Wegener's German Expressionist masterpiece looks spectacular in this new restoration. It's rare to see a century-old film look this good. I am definitely buying the Kino Blu when it is on sale. The plot is based on the medieval legend of a clay man brought to life by a Kabbalist rabbi to save the Jews of Prague from persecution.
2. Now, Voyager (1942), #1004, Blu--In what is probably her best-known "weepie", Bette Davis plays the neurotic Charlotte Vale whose emotional stability has been destroyed by her domineering mother. With the help of kindly shrink Claude Rains, Charlotte undergoes a makeover and becomes a beautiful swan, finally able to taste love on a South American cruise with suave Paul Henreid.
3. Fail Safe (1964), #1011--Even though I've seen Fail Safe multiple times, it is still a nail-biter of a film with a gut punch ending. The Cold War nightmare scenario of a critical failure causing an accidental nuclear war almost came true 19 years after the film's release during the Abel Archer incident when a simulated war game made the Soviets think they were under imminent threat of an attack by the US.
Sept. 2
4. All That Jazz (1979), #724--This happened to be on TCM tonight. It hasn't aged a day. Bob Fosse was such a control freak he made Ann Reinking audition to play herself.
Sep. 3
5. Throne of Blood (1957), #190--Kurosawa's adaptation of Macbeth is a masterpiece of B/W photography, blending an eerie, fog-shrouded landscape derived from sumi-e ink drawings that emphasize empty space and the Noh style music and makeup.
Sep. 4
6. Some Like It Hot (1959), #950--Billy Wilder's gender-bending classic still works 61 years later. Contrary to current intellectual trends that try to read some deeper sexual significance into Billy Wilder and I.A.L. Diamond's sparkling screenplay, there is no deeper meaning or message here--it's just a comedy about two musicians donning drag to escape being rubbed out by Chicago mobsters after inadvertently witnessing the St. Valentine's Day Massacre.
Sep. 5
7. The Blob (1958), #91--One of the most iconic horror films of the 1950s.
Sep. 6
8. Stagecoach (1939), #516--The movie that made John Wayne a star, and after The Searchers, John Ford's greatest film.
9. Bamboozled (2000), #1019--Criterion timed their release of Spike Lee's searing satire of racial stereotyping perfectly to sync wth 2020's racial reckoning in the wake of George Floyd's murder.
Sep. 7
10. Jimi Plays Monterey (1986)/ Shake! Otis at Monterey, #169--The greatest guitarist America ever produced back when music was made by people and not Autotune
11. Monterey Pop (1968), #169, Not as generation-defining as Woodstock, but Monterey Pop has The Who's American debut and Jimi Hendrix, so there's that..
12. Z (1969), #491-Z is the film that Costa Gavras will be remembered for. It's a taut political thriller about the assassination of a doctor that leads to an impending fascist coup in Greece. Like The Third Man, Z has a memorable soundtrack..
13. A Poem is a Naked Person, #805--Les Blank must have been on some amazing drugs when he made this. It's extremely unfocused, spending some time showing Leon Russell performing live and recording, then showing multiple scenes of snakes eating birds and groovy wave patterns on water..
14. Don't Look Back (1967), #786--Don't look Back is one of the most revealing portraits of an artist committed to film. The two main takeaways from this doc are that Bob Dylan is a musical genius, and that he is an insufferable jackass.
Sep. 8
15. The Asphalt Jungle (1950), #847-Tarantino and Scorsese were clearly influenced by this John Huston crime classic.
16. Rififi (1955), #115--The heist scene about an hour in is a masterpiece of visual storytelling.
Sep. 12
17. The Breakfast Club (1985), #905-John Hughes's tale of the identity issues of a pack of white suburban teenagers is absurdly myopic.
18. Double Indemnity (1944), Criterion Channel-A Billy Wilder noir masterpiece.
Sep. 15
19. Desert Hearts (1985), #902- Desert Hearts tells a bare-bones story of a repressed academic and a working class woman who fall in love. I've seen this story told better in Bound and Carol.
20. Crash (1996), #1059--Crash continues David Cronenberg's thematic obsession with body horror that runs through his films, this time by taking America's love for the automobile to a disturbingly literal level. Nobody in this film behaves like a normal human--your husband has just flown through the windscreen of your car during a head-on collision, and your first reaction is to flash your boob at the other driver? OK, the driver was James Spader back when he was still hot, but c'mon! Instead of being worried or saddened over maiming and death from car crashes, these characters are sexually aroused by them. Cronenberg made pornography for robots. Crash is one of the best films of the 90s, and also one of the most perverse.
Sep. 17.
21. Anatomy of a Murder (1959), #600-This is probably Otto Preminger's best film, a courtroom drama where the director never tells us where to place our sympathies. The cast is amazing--Jimmy Stewart, Ben Gazzara, Lee Remick, George C Scott, and a slew of terrific character actors like Eve Arden in smaller roles. Duke Ellington provides a swinging jazz soundtrack..
Sep. 18.
22. Dark Victory, (1939), Criterion Channel. Bette Davis plays spoiled socialite Judith Traherne who develops a problem with her vision that turns out to be terminal brain cancer. This is a 4-hanky weeper, with Davis milking her character's illness for sentimentality as hard as she can.
Sep. 20
23. Ghost World (2001), #872--Daniel Clowes's Oscar-nominated screenplay sparkles with wit and a certain empathy for its quirky, damaged characters. As terrific as Thora Birch and ScarJo are playing disaffected smartasses navigating the onset of adulthood after high school become grating after a while. maybe because we are living in an age of extreme cynicism.
Sep.22
24. The French Lieutenant's Woman (1981), #768-Harold Pinter's adaptation of John Fowles's novel doesn't really capture the texture of the book's narrative, but this is a marvelous film with standout performances from Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons
25. Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), #982-One of the best rock musicals ever, and pertinent to today's questions about transgender people, and gender fluidity.
26. Detour (1945), #966-Tom Neal wasn't a terrific actor, so his befuddled persona works well in a story about an average guy who finds himself in a world of hurt. Ann Savage is aptly named because she plays a quintessential no-good dame.
27. Come and See (1985), #1035-"The brutality of war" is so inadequate to describe the spectacle of sheer, insensate evil humans inflict on each other. The young man who plays Fiyora conveys the trauma his character suffers so well I have to wonder how much was acting and how much was real from enduring the scenes he had to film.
Sep.24
28. Paris is Burning (1990), #1018-Before RuPaul's Drag Race, before Pose, came Paris Is Burning, a chronicle of the Harlem drag ball scene in the late 80s that is required viewing for gay and trans people.
Sep. 25
29. Blood Wedding, Eclipse Set 6--Director Carlos Saura and choreographer and principal dancer Antonio Gades collaborated on this masterful blend of flamenco and ballet
Sep. 27
30. 1984 (1984), #984-I probably should not have watched this so close to the election.
Sep. 29
31. Leave Her to Heaven (1946), #1020--Gene Tierney's psychopathic character reminds me of my brother-in-law's first wife.
Sep. 30
32. The Last Emperor (1987), #422--I've been to the Forbidden City and it truly is a vast labyrinth of palaces and temples. The real Pu Yi was a fairly loathsome man who abused the people around him and betrayed China to the Japanese. Bertolucci's film whitewashes Pu YI to make him a sympathetic character.
33. Onibaba (1964), #226--The wind over the wheat in the opening creates an eerie atmosphere for this horror classic. That mask reveal is heinous.
34. Scanners (1981), #712-The FX aren't as shocking now, although they definitely hold up. Michael Ironside's Revok is a classic in his gallery of villainous roles..
35. The Atomic Submarine (1958), #366--Pretty pedestrian SF/ horror flick
35. Herschell Gordon Lewis: The Godfather of Gore (2010), Criterion Channel--The comment at the beginning comparing a Walt Whitman poem to Lewis's Blood Feast, "it was no good, but it was the first of its kind," isn't fair to Whitman but is a sound assessment of Lewis as the father of the splatter film.
36. Haxan (1922), #134--I haven't watched this in several years, and it appeals to me more now. There's a lot to admire in this weird mix of documentary and fiction about the history of witchcraft in Europe and the supremacy of rationality over superstition.
