70. Lovecraft Country Episode 9/Episode 10

I was more than a little disappointed in Lovecraft Country.but it did have one of the most satisfying first 2 minutes in episode one I've seen, but the tone of the show and the ties to actual Lovecraft mythos just were tenuous at best. The multiple universes episode I ended up enjoying a lot though and the flashback episode was pretty intense. Maybe it just had too many episodes for what it was actually doing....8 might have been better here to keep things tight and still include some of the drama. Omar was very good when he was given time to stretch his talents.

Re: The 16th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***

My Eighth Horror Challenge
*= first time watching
Counting Method: 1 hour of Television Content or 1 movie = 1 item

My goal is 31.
Potential List:
#Alive
Anna and the Apocalypse
Final Exam
Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday
Sleepy Hollow
The Gallows Act II
The Night Eats the World
The Open House
The Silence
Triangle
Freakish - Season 2
Supernatural - Season 15

October 1
1. Triangle (2009)*
Confusing and complicated but smart. It kept me guessing.
Body Count - 7

October 2
3. Freakish - Season 2, Ep. 1-4 *
4. Jason Goes to Hell: The Final Friday (1993)*
This was fun. Fun story and a good way to wrap things up.
Body Count - 26

October 3
5. #Alive (2020)*
A good zombie movie. I now need to purchase a drone.
Body Count - Countless

October 4
6. The Open House (2018)*
There were a few scenes that were my nightmares but over all it was more psychological than anything else. A bit frustrating too.
Body Count - 4

October 5
7. Final Exam (1981)*
Possibly the worst movie I have ever seen. Definitely some of the worst acting.
Body Count - 11

October 6
8. Amityville: The Awakening (2017)*
Creepy. Point off for killing the dog.
Body Count - 4

October 7
10. Freakish - Season 2, Ep. 5-8 *

October 8
11. Freakish - Season 2, Ep. 9-10 *
12. Supernatural - Ep. 15.14 "Last Holiday" *

October 9
13. Hell House LLC (2015)*
This was a well done found footage move with some genuinely scary moments. I could have told them right off that any hotel named Abaddon was bad news.
Body Count - 13

October 10
14. Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Next Generation (1995)*
Very odd and unsettling. Parts were campy and parts were confusing. It wasn't scary so much as alarming. I think this series is just not for me.
Body Count - 8

October 11
15. Anna and the Apocalypse (2017)*
So, so fun! Some great songs and just an enjoyable movie.
Body Count - 7 & Countless Zombies

October 12
16. Ouija (2014)*
OK movie, interesting story. More jump scares than any real scares.
Body Count - 6

October 13
17. Host (2020)*
This one really scared me! Very well done. Minimal setting and very intense.
Body Count - 8

October 14
18. Chain Letter (2010)*
One truly weird movie. Young John Winchester is nowhere near as tough as his sons.
Body Count - 7
19. Eli Roth's History of Horror - Ep. 1.1 "Zombies" & 2.1 "Houses of Hell"*

October 15
20. Supernatural - Ep. 15.15 "Gimme Shelter" *
21. Reality Z - Season 1, Ep. 1-2 *

October 16
22. The Host (2006)*
So weird but I enjoyed it.
Body Count - 45 (Best guess)

October 17
23. The Final Girls (2015)*
This was funny and sweet and so well done. Really enjoyable.
Body Count - 9
24. The Possession (2012)*
Very creepy and very well done. John really needed his sons help in this one.
Body Count - 2

October 18
25. Cockneys vs Zombies (2012)*
Utter insanity which delighted my English husband.
Body Count - 20

October 19
26. The Gallows Act II (2019)*
Boring. I liked the first movie but this one was just eh. They get minus points for killing the dog.
Body Count - 5

October 20
27. House of Wax (2005)*
Not bad. Interesting concept.
Body Count - 6

October 21
29. Reality Z - Season 1, Ep. 3-6 *

October 22
30. Supernatural - Ep. 15.16 "Drag Me Away (From You)" *
31. The Haunting of Bly Manor - Ep. 1.1 "The Great Good Place" *
32. The Haunting of Bly Manor - Ep. 1.2 "The Great Good Place" *
33. The Haunting of Bly Manor - Ep. 1.3 "The Two Faces, Part One" *

October 23
34. The Strangers (2008)*
Creepy but not super scary. I spent a large part of the movie wishing James, the good guy would hurry up and die as I really didn't like him.
Body Count - 2

October 24
35. The Strangers: Prey at Night (2018)*
Things I have learned from this movie - I'll survive because I never answer the door when someone knocks and I never leave my phone in another room, much less in the house when I leave. I do need to get a lighter though.
Body Count - 8

October 25
36. Reality Z - Season 1, Ep. 7-8 *

October 26
37. The Night Eats the World (2018)*
This started out so well. It really got us involved and then it just fizzled out.
Body Count - 10
38. Reality Z - Season 1, Ep. 9-10 *

October 27
39. Verónica (2017)*
That was very creepy. Well done.
Body Count - 1
40. What We Do in the Shadows (2014)*
This was the absolute best.
Body Count - 3

October 28
41. The Silence (2019)*
This was really good. Scary and well done. And my love for Stanley Tucci only grows.
Body Count - 12

October 29
42. Dark Skies (2013)*
Weird. The dad was annoying.
Body Count - 0
43. Supernatural - Ep. 15.17 "Unity" *
44. Quarantine (2008)*
Dear Lord, that was creepy. Definitely not my flavor of horror and probably the worst year to watch it.
Body Count - 21

October 30
42. Uncanny Annie (2018)*
A fun, creepy movie.
Body Count - 8
43. Sleepy Hollow (1999)*
A bit slow. Johnny Depp is pretty though.
Body Count - 20
44. Hell House LLC II: The Abaddon Hotel (2018)*
So scary. I jumped and literally screamed.
Body Count - 11

October 31
45. Thir13en Ghosts (2001)
A favorite of mine.
Body Count - 11
46. Polaroid (2019)*
Pretty good and had an interesting plot.
Body Count - 11
47. Spiral (2019)*
A bit odd but had a good payoff. George Romero would be proud of the social commentary.
Body Count - 7
48. Chernobyl Diaries (2012)*
So creepy. Never go on a "special" tour.
Body Count - 8
49. The Lodge (2019)*
Depressing and sad. So not my kind of horror movie.
Body Count - 6
50. Hell House LLC III: Lake of Fire (2019)*
A nice wrap up to the trilogy. This series was my favorite of the month.
Body Count - 1

Re: The 16th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***

OCTOBER 1 - Nothing
OCTOBER 2

1. Cry of the Banshee (1970) In the vein of Witchfinder General, Vincent Price presides over a small town as the resident witch hunter. Meanwhile, a strange creature (not a Banshee by the way) is murdering the townfolk.
2. House on Willow Street (2016) A woman is kidnapped but her captors get much more than they bargained for.

OCTOBER 3
3. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, S1 (2018) Episodes: Chapter One: October Country / Chapter Two: The Dark Baptism

OCTOBER 4
4. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, S1 (2018) Episodes: Chapter Three: The Trail of Sabrina / Chapter Four: Witch Academy
5. The Asphyx (1972) Total cult classic with a chilling premise. If a person's Asphyx, a creature that comes to take you when you die, is captured you become immortal.

OCTOBER 5
6. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, S1 (2018) Episodes: Chapter Five: Dreams in a Witch House / Chapter Six: An Exorcism in Greendale

OCTOBER 6
7. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, S1 (2018) Episodes: Chapter Seven: Feast of Feasts / Chapter Eight: The Burial

OCTOBER 7
8. We Are Still Here (2015) Scream Queen Barbara Crampton (still looking great) moves into a house with her husband shortly after loosing their son. The house, of course, has a dark history that comes to haunt them.
9. Creep (2014) Perhaps the most uncomfortable movie I've ever seen. It creeps you out, not with scares. but with the sheer social discomfort of a person being WAY too open with themselves.

OCTOBER 8
10. Hellraiser
(1987) A classic - still holds up.
11. Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988) Perhaps the best horror sequel ever made - follows the original story and takes it to the next level.
12. Hellrasier: Revelations (2011) Reboot of sorts, with some good moments.

OCTOBER 9
13. The Haunting of Bly Manor
(2020) Episodes: The Great Good Place / The Pupil - So damn boring, I gave up after 2 episodes where absolutely nothing happens.

OCTOBER 10
14. The Windmill Massacre
(2016) Not great, but not bad either and gets props for the unusual location - a windmill in Holland. An evil entity lures sinners to the windmill so they can get their just desserts.

OCTOBER 11
15. México Bárbaro II
(2017) Not as good as the first one, this horror anthology is hit and miss (as most are) but mostly a miss. Many of the shorts seem like student films.

OCTOBER 12
16. Las Reglas de la Ruina
(2018) Heavy on the Lovecraft lore, referencing HPL's creations several times. The low budget shows in places, but a sincere effort that's worth a watch.

OCTOBER 13
17. The Haunting of Whaley House
(2012)
18. City of the Dead AKA Horror Hotel (1960)

OCTOBER 14
19. Muerte: Tales of Horror
(2018) Very low budget, bad acting and so-so effects but done with lots of enthusiasm. An anthology film with some good moments and fun scenes.
19. Harbinger Down (2015) A group of scientists on a crab fishing boat discover a Soviet capsule with an alien organism. Very much inspired (or ripped off some might say) by The Thing, no doubt but it does a good job with the suspense and practical effects. Lance Henriksen stars and gives the proceedings a touch of class.
20. Nocturne (2020) Perhaps the best devil movie in years. Very subtle and character-oriented. A young pianist, jealous of her sister's superior ability, makes a pact with supernatural forces to give her the spotlight. Or is this all in her head, a result of the drugs she takes? Kept me glued to the screen.

OCTOBER 15
21. WILDCARD 1: The Lie
(2018)

OCTOBER 16
22. Belzebuth
(2017)

OCTOBER 17
23. WILDCARD 2: The Cormorant
(1993)

OCTOBER 18
24. Truth or Dare
(2018)

OCTOBER 19
25. Haunt
(2019)

OCTOBER 20
26. The Field Guide to Evil
(2018)

OCTOBER 21
27. Sorority Row
(2009)

OCTOBER 22
28. The Ghoul
(1975)

OCTOBER 23
29. Children of the Corn
(1984)

OCTOBER 24
30. Children of the Corn II: The Final Sacrifice
(1992)

OCTOBER 25
31. Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest
(1995)

OCTOBER 26
32. Children of the Corn V: Fields of Terror
(1998)

OCTOBER 27
33. Husk
(2011)
34. Devil's Gate (2020)

OCTOBER 28
34.5. Paul Lynd's Halloween Special
(1976)
35. The Addams Family (1964) Episodes: Halloween With the Addams Family / New Neighbors Meet the Addams Family

OCTOBER 29
36. Carnivore: Werewolf of London
(2017)
37. Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, S1 (2018) Chapter Nine: The Returned Man / Chapter Ten: The Witching Hour
38. The Monster's Den (2020) Youtube series on the Sea of Tranquility Youtube channel that discusses classic horror films. I've seen enough episodes to add up more than 2 hours worth of viewing, thus the entry.

OCTOBER 30
39. Blood on Satan's Claw
(1971) Total classic.
40. The Snow Creature (1954)

OCTOBER 31
41. The Bat
(1959) This is more of a murder mystery but it stars Vincent Price and IMDB does have it classified as horror.

Re: The 16th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***

Brainee's 2020 DVDTalk Horror Movie Challenge List

Previous challenge totals:
2008: 100
2010: 100
2011: 53
2013: 54
2014: 36
2015: 56
2016: 106
2017: 101.25
2018: 70
2019: 121
2020: 71

Goal: Sadly I won't be able to come close to 100 this year. So I'm setting a modest goal of 31 first-time views (while clearing out a backlog of horror that's been building). Maybe I'll hit 50 total, at best.
Total: 71
First Time Views: 65

= first time viewing

Movies rated out of 5 stars (*****) based solely on my personal enjoyment.

September 30th (Dusk)
1. Braid (2018): I think I should've started with some easier-to-digest horror movies for night one (especially since I was feeling tired from not getting enough sleep and was struggling with my attention span). I could appreciate the style of the movie (particularly for a first-time young director), there were some striking moments, and three main actresses did a good job. I'm not sure it all held together in the end though. ***

2. Hagazussa (2017): Long on atmosphere (the middle-ages Balkan mountain setting was alternatively beautiful and creepy) ... short of anything really happening in the way of story. Very well-made but dreary and depressing and I guess that's kind of the point. I just don't think I'm in the mood for movies like this this year. **1/2

October 2nd
3. Get Duked! (2019): Low-brow to be sure, but got a number of genuine laughs from me. I was in the mood for something lighter and this hit the spot, leaning more towards "comedy" than "horror". ***1/2

4. 1BR (2019): Ended up reminding me a bit of The Invitation. Not as good as that movie, but similar building slow dread using residential LA for a story of cult-horror. ***1/2

5. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1006-1009

October 3rd
6. ☼ We Summon the Darkness (2019): Watchable time-passer that had a couple of decent twists (revealed by the first 30 minutes):
Spoiler:
that the killers were the girls the movie started with, and instead of being part of a satanic cult it was brainwashed Christian evangelicals.
***

7. Sputnik (2020): Not quite what I was expecting when hearing this was Russia's Alien or The Thing. But take those baggage of expectations out of it, and this was a solid little move (if a bit on the low-key and talky side). ***1/2

8. ☼ Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018): S1, E1-2.

October 4th
9. Becky (2020): Getting to see comedian Kevin James play a murderous Neo-Nazi was what drew me to this one. He did alright, though I don't think I ever really bought into his performance. The movie itself was a solid horror twist on Home Alone with a bit of Die Hard, though it stretched belief in having a sulky 13 year old girl suddenly turn into a gore-soaked assassin. ***

10. Haunt (2019): A taut and nasty horror movie about a group of young people trying to survive a haunted house filled with murderous disfigured killer clowns. It seemed like there's a cool backstory to the killer clowns we never were privy too. Still, a nice movie to watch in October. ***1/2

11. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1010-1013.

October 5th
12. After Midnight (2019): Certainly not a movie for anyone looking for anything close to a horror movie. But if you don't mind a slow paced slice-of-life indie romantic drama (with a metaphorical monster making a couple of appearances), this could be for you. ***

October 6th
13. She Dies Tomorrow (2020): Critic reviews on Rotten Tomatoes made this sound so great. It does have an interesting idea (about a contagious belief that people are going to die the next day). But good god, is this movie boring. **

14. Dead Dicks (2019): A nice example how people can make a good movie with limited resources with an interesting (and original) premise and commitment. It didn't quite hit the landing, but for most part it worked for me (not just being a weird sci-fi/horror/comedy but getting into some serious real-world issues about struggling with a loved one with mental illness). ***1/2

15. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1014-1017.

October 7th
16. The Hunt (2020): The running time just flew by, I'll give it that. And the cast is all game. Though the satire is so broad that I could never forget that I'm watching a movie (and actually care about anything that happens). ***

17. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1018-1021.

October 8th
18. Gretel & Hansel (2020): Having seen a couple of other Oz Perkins movies, I knew what I was getting into here. And while it's his most accessible movie, it's still very leisurely paced and thin on story. But it looks and sounds good and has a relatively short running time so I could forgive the indulgences and find some enjoyment. ***

19. ☼ Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018): S1, E3-4.

October 9th
20. Piercing (2018): It has style to burn, but a two character movie is tough to watch when neither character is likable and hardly anything happens in the story. And while I love the 70's giallo style that they went for, it seems lazy to outright use the music from those movies instead of coming up with an original score. **1/2

21. Followed (2018): The story (people spend Halloween in a haunted hotel ... ghost mayhem ensues) and style (found footage) are awfully familiar. Still, I thought this was done well for what it was. ***

22. VFW (2019): Another "homage" movie ... this one to John Carpenter's Escape From New York and Assault from Precinct 13. This was loads of fun, especially due to a wonderful cast of old veterans kicking ass. Crazy that Fred Williamson is over 80 now. This would've been my first **** of the month except the lighting was crap throughout (made it really hard to tell what was going on, and looking at viewer comments on IMDb I wasn't the only one who had this problem). So I'll give it ***1/2

23. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1022-1025.

October 10th
24. The Wretched (2019): A solid monster story, though nothing special. It felt like there were aspects of creature/witch mythology left unexplored, which could have added more substance. I did like the aspect of children being "forgotten" before being claimed. ***

25. Daniel Isn't Real (2019): I heard this described as a horror take on Drop Dead Fred ... which I suppose it is (a child's imaginary friend who was locked away is released and causes mayhem). But there's more to it than that, and I really enjoyed this. And Daniel is played by none other than Arnold Schwarzenegger's son Patrick (who makes a fine obnoxious creep). ****

October 11th
26. Cut Off (2018): More of a thriller, but the gruesome subject matter certain earns it horror as a sub-genre. Despite a longish running time, the story had plenty of twists and turns that kept my attention. Heroine Linda is made of sterner stuff than me, since there's no way I'm doing an autopsy by phone directions from a guy I didn't know (especially with a knife-wielding psycho killer in the hospital). And it made great use of Heligoland (an island off the northern coast of Germany) in a snowstorm as a setting. ***1/2

27. Host (2020): I think this is the first movie I've seen set in the COVID pandemic age. Having a horror story told completely through a Zoom session is clever. The movie itself is full of found-footage tropes: cheap jump scares, shaky cam sobbing, and inexplicable instances of camera-footage when the character should not be shooting. Though at under 60 minutes there's no fat and I appreciate a good indie film making effort. ***

28. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1026-1029.

October 12th
29. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1030-1033.

October 13th
30. The Lodge (2019): This is one I think I may have to process more in my head. It had a great chilly atmosphere (a snow-bound lodge), a plot that kept me guessing where it was going, and a tone of escalating dread that draws comparisons to Ari Aster's movies. Though the big plot twist, while surprising, left me conflicted how I felt about things (giant spoiler follows that should not be read if you ever plan to watch):
Spoiler:
those were a couple of the most evil children ever in a movie, especially since it seems we were supposed to feel bad for them. Their "gaslight" plot was so elaborate and premeditated that it strained belief. And it was impossible to have sympathy for them, especially after they let the cute dog die (despite the girl crying, they knew that dog was gone for days before giving a shit) and stealing Grace's medication. And the dad seems like an idiot too, for leaving them alone in the first place.
Still, very good movie. ***1/2

October 14th
31. Impetigore (2019): The first 10 minutes would make a great little short based on a setting that seems mundane but can be pretty creepy ... working at a tollbooth fearing a psycho is out to get you. And then we get a whole movie with (in no particular order) black magic, curses, ghosts, skinless babies, baby eating , lots of throat slitting, and Indonesian shadow puppetry! It's nowhere near as bonkers as I probably just made it sound, but a very worthwhile view for horror fans open to foreign movies. ***1/2

32. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1034-1037.

October 15th
33. Extra Ordinary (2019): Very fun, and funny, comedy/fantasy/horror/rom-com. It's refreshing to see a rom-com with normal-looking people. And Will Forte has a great role as a washed-up former one-hit wonder (and what a wonderfully terrible song it is!) turning to the black arts, and hunting for virgins, to resurrect his career. ****

34. Relic (2020): Maybe I should've watched the slow depressing movie first . The last 30 minutes was really gripping though, doing a great job of putting you in the mind of what it might be like to suffer from dementia. Undoubtedly this isn't going to be everyone's cup of tea, given that the "monsters" are all metaphorical and at its heart it's a sad family drama. ***

35. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1038-1041.

October 16th
36. The Rental (2020): I thought this had potential. I wasn't sure where things were going for much of the movie, and that's a good thing for a horror movie. Is it a Shallow Grave type thriller (with friends turning on friends). Is it a "creepy peeper" type of psychological horror? Is it (rental) home invasion horror? Or maybe outright slasher horror? The problem was after building up my expectations for what it might do ... it ended up doing not much. **1/2

37. Dachra (2018): Apparently this is the first Tunisian horror movie ever! I didn't think an Arabic country could make a movie like this (not just horror, but featuring swearing, female nudity, and some fairly gory and disturbing scenes), but reading up it sounds like Tunisia is fairly progressive (being a democracy and politically closer to France and Italy than other Arabic countries). This is pretty good too. The story set-up is familiar: young people from the city go to an isolated village and suspect weird goings on, perhaps involving witchcraft, human sacrifice, and cannibalism. At times the film making is a bit rough, especially when the director overdoes it with fake out nightmare sequences. But things pick up when our heroes reach the village ("dachra" means "village" in Arabic) and the low budget and amateur extras add to a nice creepy atmosphere. ***1/2

October 17th
38. Werewolf (2018): There's not a werewolf to be found here. What there are is a pack of Nazi dogs terrorizing children concentration camp survivors (and any Russians or Germans that get too close as well). As you can guess, this is a grim affair. But it's something different, is well-made, and is deeper than just another monster movie. ***1/2

39. Amulet (2020): Another really slow burn that struggled to keep my attention for the first hour. It did come together in the end to tell a different kind of demonic possession story. ***

40. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1042-1045.

October 18th
41. Satanic Panic (2019): Fun and fast-moving, though nothing really new (in fact the second comedy-horror about incompetent Satanists I've seen this month). It's cool to see Rebecca Romijn with a juicy role, and Jerry O'Connell has a short but memorable appearance. ***1/2

42. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1046-1049.

October 20th
43. Pledges (2018): Well, I made it to day 20 of the challenge before hitting a stinker. And I only have myself to blame ... it seems I wanted to see a movie called Pledge. Turns out this turkey has the exact same running time, same year of production, same genre ... just off by a letter. I'm such an idiot This doesn't deserve any stars.

44. I Trapped the Devil (2019): "The Howling Man" was a good episode of The Twilight Zone, about a man who claims he has the devil trapped in a room and a visitor who doesn't believe him. This is pretty much the same story, stretched painfully out to feature-length running time. The filmmakers seemed to mean well, but this was just dull and predictable. **

45. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1050-1053.

October 21st
46. Vampires vs. the Bronx (2020): This is a fun little movie that doesn't necessarily do anything new, but you should be able to guess that from the title. A dash of Fright Night, a bit of Lost Boys and Stranger Things, with some Do the Right Thing. ***1/2

47. Cargo (2017): It's another zombie apocalypse movie, but having the Australian Outback as a setting (and featuring Aborigine tribes going back to the "old ways" to survive) gives this a unique feel. It's an emotionally heavy movie, low on zombie horror and high on drama so it's not going to be for all horror fans. But I thought it was extremely well done (and I really need to watch something lighter soon). ****

October 22nd
48. The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993): I'm not having much time for rewatches this month (at least if I want to clear my big queue of new horror) but made the time for this one. Still a delightful movie that's great for two holidays! I never noticed before that Danny Elfman sings in this (and sings quite well too ... his Oingo Boingo work never really let him show that side of his talent). ****1/2

49. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1054-1057.

October 23rd
50.Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007): Tim Burton has been awfully spotty in the 21st century, but this is probably his best in that time period. I'm a bit biased to the stage production since seeing the original cast made a huge impression on me as a kid. While the movie cast doesn't quite equal that one for me, Burton takes advantage of the cinematic form doing things the stage production just couldn't do. ****

51. Ghostbusters (1984): It always annoyed me over the years when this would show on television that they always cut one of my favorite lines: "Yes, that is true. This man has no dick." I'm guessing that gets left in now, since television these days can do pretty much everything except frontal nudity. ****1/2

52. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1058-1061.

October 24th
53. Love and Monsters (2020): As little as I'm in the mood for apocalyptic horror these days, this is a fun exception. Kind of like Zombieland, with giant mutant animals instead of zombies. Dylan O'Brien reminded me a lot of 80's era Michael J. Fox in this one. ****

54. The Wolf of Snow Hollow (2020): I get what they were going for ... and a mash-up of Fargo and a werewolf seems like it had potential. But Jim Cummings' character is so annoying it kills almost every scene he's in (and he's in almost all of the scenes). **1/2

55. Koko-di Koko-da (2019): I saw one reviewer called this a cross between The Babadook and Groundhog Day, and that pretty much sums it up. Things drag at times when we're repeating the same scenes over and over. But there are moments that have a poetic beauty (like the shadow puppet sequences), creepiness and emotion. I don't get how IMDb lists "comedy" as a genre for this though (let along the top one). ***1/2

October 25th
56. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1062-1065.

October 26th
57. The Beach House (2019): I thought this makes a nice companion piece with The Color Out of Space. It's very low-key for this first half, where I imagine it lost a number of horror fans looking for something more thrilling. But in the second half it really leans into the sci-fi/horror, body-horror, and apocalyptic. The scientist in me was hoping to hear more of the science (besides the snippets we briefly heard on the radio). ***1/2

58. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1066-1069.

October 28th
59. Blood Quantum (2019): While the zombie sub-genre is overcrowded, this brought something new to it: setting the story in a Native North American reservation, whose people are immune to turning into zombie (though they can still be killed and eaten). And this framework is used to address social issues, in addition to being a bleak and gory zombie movie. It's refreshing to see the movie was made (on both sides of the camera) by people of native descent. Despite good intentions, amateurish acting and story at times pulled things down. I'm sure it's been done at some point, but I don't remember ever seeing zombie fish before ***

60. ☼ Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018): S1, E5-6.

61. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1070-1073.

October 29th
62. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1074-1077.

October 30th
63. La Llorona (2019): Like Pan's Labyrinth, Tigers Are Not Afraid, and Under the Shadow this mixes real-world horrors with underlying magical-realism horror. Those looking for action and cheap scares should probably steer clear and watch the other "La Llorona" movie (which I haven't seen, but doesn't sound very good). This is more of an art-house drama ... and I think it would've been an interesting movie if there was nothing supernatural at all. Having protesting crowds as background noise through most of movie gave it an odd tension. ****1/2

64. #Alive (2020): It's no Train to Busan, but what is. While nothing new (I was thinking from the title that this would have more of an emphasis on social media during a zombie apocalypse) it's a tight entertaining movie that did a good job of building up tension for me. ***1/2

Halloween
65. ☼ Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018): S1, E7-8.

66. The Mask (1961): Aside from the 3-D sequences (which aren't the entire movie ... only the times the main character puts on the mask), there's not much to this movie: it's dull, unoriginal, and talky. The surrealistic mask sequences are fun, but not enough to recommend this movie. **

67.The Comedy of Terrors (1964): Perhaps as stellar a cast and crew as any horror movie has ever had: Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, Boris Karloff, and Basic Rathbone starring; Jacques Tourneur directing; Richard Matheson writing. That said, I liked The Raven more. Even though it was just acting, seeing Karloff as a doddering senile fool makes me sad. Still, there's a lot of fun to be had for fans of old-school horror (who don't mind the genre being poked fun at). ***1/2

68. Suspiria (1977): One of my all-time favorites, though I can certainly see how not all first-time viewers will appreciate it. Sure, it's style over substance ... but when the visual and auditory style is so glorious I give it a pass. This is movie that really demands to be seen on as big a screen as possible with a booming sound system. *****

69.Phantasm (1979): Talk of this in the discussion thread made me revisit this on Amazon Prime. Another movie where I can see how not everyone will be open to its charms. I'm probably biased since this was one of the first R-rated movies I saw in the theater. I was mad when I couldn't see Halloween in theaters because my mom heard there was sex and nudity. But I guess she didn't hear anything like that about Phantasm ... and sure enough there was a sex scene and a topless woman in the very first scene! ****1/2

70. Night of the Demons (1988): I don't think I ever saw the whole thing before ... maybe just snippets on tv. The VHS box was one of those I always saw, so I'm not sure why I never checked this out. But this is fun 80's cheese, and I can see why it has a following. ***1/2

71. Dark Shadows (1970): Ep 1078-1081.

Re: The 16th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***

Back for another year. Aiming for 50+ movies again.

10/1
1. Pitch Black [Blu-ray]
I've always liked this movie and I love to open up my challenge with a movie I enjoy. I think it sets a nice tone for the rest of month.
10/2
2. Abbott and Costello Meet Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde [Blu-ray]
I love Abbott and Costello, grew up on them. I love that they are now on Blu-ray and looking great. Universal, regardless of mishaps with their library/archive, really loves it's catalog and it shows with things like these old classics readily available for a reasonable price.
3. The Rental [Prime] [new]
This is a new one for me. There seems to be a run on AirBNB/House Rental horrors and this is definitely one of them. There's something new in here along with lots of good old stuff and some true character tensions/development to keep it from turning into just another ole' horror.
4. Christine
A surprisingly innocent horror flick -- I think. I remember seeing this one when it came out in 1983. Some of the best use of diegetic music as a plot element/device in a movie. On the most part, the car takes out characters you aren't supposed to like.
5. Carrie [Blu-ray]
Probably the most quoted horror movie in my house. "They're all gonna laugh at you!" Don't worry -- it's said out of love and affection. Honest.
6. The Body [Hulu] [new]
Fun premise that plays out well, I think. Feels like a streamer movie.
10/3
7. Skeleton Key
There may be voodoo and hoodoo in this movie -- but the real magic is good creepy acting seeping from the pores of excellent actors. Turn pure genre tropes into a potboiler with a diabolical ending.
8. Fun Size
Not a horror movie, but it's all Halloween. I don't know why but I enjoy this movie every year. Likely going to be a regular.
9. Edward Scissorhands [Blu-ray]
10. Frankenweenie [Blu-ray]
Burton peeks into my soul, that bastard, and turns it into movies.
10/4
11. Haunted House (1921), Merry Frolics of Satan (1906), Infernal Cauldron (1903), Inventor Crazybrain and his Wonderful Airship (1905) [New]
12. Shaun of the Dead [Blu-Ray]
13. Down [Hulu] [new]
A solid one-room thriller, less of a horror more of a thriller I think. Often these movies turn for a thriller to a horror on one or two acts/scenes and I think this has 0.5 of them.
14. The Purge [Blu-ray]

10/5
15. Se7en [DVD]

10/6
16. Sea Fever [Hulu] [new]
I like this sea horror. Feels like a inexpensive movie but it creeps like a big budget one.
17. Winchester [Netflix] [new]
Creepy well-acted thriller that isn't all that inventive, unfortunately. It actually get less creepy/scary as it draws to a close making a little disappointing.
18. The Car [Netflix] [new]
Jaws with a car in the sea of Zion National park. This one gets going fast and keeps up the pace. It features some of the worst grief stricken against the wall acting ever by Ronny Cox. I guess his early experience with a deadly machine made selling Robocop easy as cake.
10/7
19. It Came from the Desert [Hulu] [new]
Fun Them! inspired creature feature.
10/8
20. The Girl on the Third Floor [Netflix] [new]
This "there's something wrong with the house" movie has some nice twists.
10/9
21. Curse of Downers Corner [Hulu] [new]

10/10
22. Culture Shock [Hulu] [new]
23. Hubie Halloween[Netflix] [new]

10/11

24. Nasty Piece of Work [Hulu] [new]
25. Black Box [Prime] [new]
26. Night Stalker [Blu-ray]
27. Halloween Episodes - Will & Grace "Boo! Humbug", 30 Rock "Stone Mountain", How I Met Your Mother "Slutty Pumpkin", and King of Queens "Ticker Treat" [new]

10/12
28. Night Strangler [Blu-Ray]

10/13
29. Evil Eye [Prime] [new]
30. Lie [Prime] [new]
31. Friday the 13th (original)

10/14
32. Wishmaster
33. House October Built [Prime] [new]

10/15
34. Wallace & Grommit: Curse of the Were-rabbit
I watch this one every year and still love all the little details I keep seeing in there. The art direction/design of this is endlessly dense -- like a spot the difference game with 1000 differences it's full of stuff to find.
35. [REC] [Blu-ray]
I don't know what it is about Quarantine and [REC] but I love these movies. Maybe because I lived in similar apartment building in downtown Philadelphia and remember never going up to the two top stories (I didn't have a reason to go up there, so never did.) I was left to my imagination of what was up there -- and might have been an abandoned laboratory for all I know. Picked up the Shout box set as it looks like it may be going away.
10/16
36. It - Chapter One [Blu-ray]
Wow, this is my third time watching this and it holds up great. Plan to keep this in the rotation and see if I can't score a deal on Chapter Two to make this a nice 1-2 each year.
10/17
37. Paranorman [Blu-ray]
38. Coraline [Blu-ray]
These two are regulars on my yearly lists for good reason. Both of them are a delight and show off the craft of stop motion animation in ways we don't see outside of Aardman anymore.
10/18
40. XX [Hulu] [new]
This is a brief and interesting anthology. Feels like 80s Twilight Zone stories that were mix of horrific, personal, thought-provoking, and sometimes lighthearted.
41. Pilgrim [Hulu] [new]
42. Blood Diner [Hulu] [new]
Two horror movies that gotta eat. Pilgrim is a straight creeper that breaks the second act wall of going from creepy to sinster to get-the-hell-out nearly instantaneously. Blood Diner is amazing in how ludicrous it is while manically moving along so you can't look away. This Dinner is B- made A by projectile vomitting 90s schlock with earnest abandon and a comic tone that is perfect.
10/19
43. Silence of the Lambs
The serial killer is simply another creature feature -- this time more realistic than the classic monsters. Now, there's all these attempts to turn the classic monsters into modern horrors and they invariably resemble serial killers.
10/20
44. Nocturne[Prime] [new]
I feel like I've seen this sorta horror before a number of previous movies. Nice blending of tropes.
10/21
45. Vacancy

10/22
46. Mr. Mercedes S1E1 & S1E2 [Peacock] [new]
47. Mr. Mercedes S1E3 & S1E4 [Peacock] [new]
This Mr. Mercedes series is really a great thriller from King. The first season is very binge-able and plays out well, but it wraps up too easily if you ask me. But I give this one credit for showing horrible cringe-worthy scenes in just about every episode and having horrible characters outside of the titular Mr. Mercedes.
48. The Purge: Anarchy

10/23
49. The Tingler [DVD]

10/24
50. Mr. Mercedes S1E5 & S1E6 [Peacock] [new]
51. Mr. Mercedes S1E7 & S1E8 [Peacock] [new]
52. Mr. Mercedes S1E9 & S1E10
[Peacock] [new]
53. Psych Halloween Episodes: S1 and S2

10/25
54. Black Christmas [Blu-ray]
55. Motel Hell [Blu-ray]
I really enjoy this one. Saw it so many years ago when it lingering in theaters from the original release. I usually didn't see horror movies, but this was billed as a horror-comedy. Not a single fright in here but hilarious to the end.
56. Trick'r'Treat [Blu-ray]

10/26
57. Mr. Mercedes S2E1 & S2E2 [Peacock] [new]
Second season tracks to the Finders Keepers book and is full of King tropes and mythology. Slower build than season one.
10/27
58. Bad Hair [Hulu] [new]
This is a really great streaming horror. I love the mythology and lurking world building under the surface of the retro 80s setting. This fits together well and makes sense in terms of the time period and setting. The leads in this play it perfectly for this movie and it pays off bigger than I imagined in the end.
59. Cooties [Hulu] [new]
Not sure I want to eat chicken nuggets ever again -- especially not ones with black patches on them.
10/29
60. [REC]2 [Blu-ray]
Revisiting the [REC] series is awesome. These are spot on, fast-paced, and are full of frights and ideas. I don't think there's anything like these first two movies elsewhere in horror. This on-the-heels of the first movie sequel is successful as the original without being a blueprint copy.
10/30
61. Needful Things [Hulu] [new]
62. Truth Seeker S1E1-E4 [Prime] [new]

10/31
63. Frankenstein
64. Bride of Frankenstein
65. American Werewolf in London
66. Beetlejuice
67. Death Proof

Final! Wrapped up the year with 67 movies/shows - 32 new to me.

Re: The 16th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***

I have started doing this every other year, and since I did it in 2018, it’s time to go for it again. I’m not super anal about the rules, and won’t hesitate to watch a tv season or limited season instead of a movie. I also see that there is a subreddit that namedrops DVD Talk... I assume you guys are aware of this?

Anyway, I’ve started this year off with horror comedies except for one of them. Here’s my list so far:
10/1 - Ready or Not
10/2 - The Babysitter 1 & 2
10/3 - The invisible Man
10/4 - about to watch Little Evil
