9. The Severed Arm (1973)☼ - ★★★✰✰ - I enjoyed this one. The premise was unique and reminded me of a campfire story (the hook hand!). Yes, the effects were laughable, and the production cheap. But I liked the story, so it kept me engaged.

10. In The Earth (2021)☼ - ★★✰✰✰ - This one was a disappointment. I like eco horror so I was looking forward to it. I found it non-sensical and without any real pay-off.

11. The Creeping Flesh (1973)☼ - ★★★★✰ -Fun vintage horror with Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing. I liked the plot--a weird skeleton starts to grow flesh when it gets wet and there's a daughter to be experimented on as well. Good stuff.

12. The Spiral Staircase (1946)- ★★★★✰ -I love this gothic pot-boiler. Always a pleasure to revisit it.

13. The Frighteners (1996)☼ - ★★★★★-Loved this. Lots of original bits like the ghost partners and the numbers on the forehead. The killer reveal was fun. The yuppie guy/ghost was a hoot, and the FBI agent! OMG, he was superb.

14. Orlac's Hand (1924)☼ - ★★✰✰✰ -There's some lovely creepy imagery in this and Conrad Velt was such a presence. But the slow pace about killed me. It felt interminable. So melodramatic!

15. She-Wolf of London (1946)☼ - ★★★✰✰ -Not much London and no actual werewolf. Still, it's short and kept my attention. Decent vintage fun.

16. The Mephisto Waltz (1971)☼ - ★★★★✰ -I'm surprised I never see this discussed in horror circles. It's really a decent Satanist movie from the 70s. Not as good as Rosemary's Baby but still quite good, and the cast is terrific -- Alan Alda and Jacqueline Bisset among others.

17. Bad Taste (1987)☼- ★✰✰✰✰ - I had the feeling I would hate this. And, oh God, I really did. Movie equivalent of Garbage Pail Kids trading cards. Middle school gross-out humor.

18. Witchfinder General (1968)- ★★★✰✰ - I like the historic theme of this, but Price as the Witchfinder is so horribly evil. The fact that this is based on actual events makes this a little hard to watch.

19. Splinter (2008)☼- ★★★★✰ - This is a really strong little creature feature. I loved the characters and the way the ex-con redeems himself in the end.

21. Leap of Faith: William Friedkin on the Exorcist (2019)☼- ★★★★✰ - This is a stellar doc about The Exorcist that mainly features Friedkin talking and footage from the film, but it's fascinating. Bonus: my husband enjoyed it too.

22. Cutting Class (1989)☼- ★★★✰✰ -This is really pretty good. Lots of red herrings and misdirection about the killer. Tight script and well paced. Better than most slashers.

23. Detention (2011)☼- ★★✰✰✰ - I initially liked the style of this, but it lost me when they started the whole time travel thing. It just got so convoluted and OTT ridiculous.

24. Frontiere (2007)☼- ★★✰✰✰ - Another torture porn movie I've been avoiding that I watched in my bid to get through the They Shoot Zombies list.... This one has great production values and is well acted. I liked the set-up with the group of young thugs (protestors?) being badass in Paris and then escaping. The weird Nazi family was really interesting. However, the gore and brutality were a bit much for me.

25. Happy Death Day 2 U (2019)☼- ★★★✰✰ - More like 3.5 stars. I really liked the first Happy Death Day. It was so original. This one is equally well made, though the concept is not as fresh. Good sequel.

OCT 7: Ladies Who Kill
26. Carrie (1976)- ★★★★★ -Horror classic right up there with The Exorcist and The Omen. Phenomenal cast, great story. The theme of a bullied high school girl may not resonate with everyone, but it sure does with me.

27. The Woman (2011)☼- ★★★★★ -I'm shocked how much I loved this. They did a fantastic job of setting up realistic characters, especially the father, who seemed so normal initially, and was such a complete turd. Loved the abused-women-get-revenge aspect. The Woman was a badass!

28. Frankenstein Created Woman (1967)☼- ★★★✰✰ -This is an enjoyable Hammer though heavy on the love story and light on the Frankenstein and horror elements.

29. The Devil's Rejects (2005)☼- ★★✰✰✰ -2.5 stars. I appreciated the style of this film, especially the Thelma-and-Louise ending with its ridiculous glam shots of the disturbing trio. I liked the crazy sheriff. However, the sadism in the hotel scenes and elsewhere was hard to stomach.

30. Crimson Peak (2015) ☼- ★★★★✰ -I have a thing for gothic Victorian romances like Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights. Crimson Peak feels like a Del Toro version of those stories. There's a once-wealthy noble family fallen into destitution, a magnificently splendid but decrepit mansion, and the darkest of family secrets--several of them. I gasped over the set design, was charmed by Hiddleston, and engaged in the story throughout. Something like this is so rare these days -- an original script, a Victorian horror story? I'm so glad Del Toro had the clout to get it made.

OCT 8: Joe Bob Says Check It Out
31. Slumber Party Massacre II (1987)☼ - ★✰✰✰✰ - This film didn't read as humor to me so much as just nonsensical. I guess I'm not the target audience for this one!

32. Nightbreed (1990)- ★★★✰✰ - Nice underdog story in which you root for the monsters. It's kind of a non-ending though.

33. The Ghost Breakers (1940)☼- ★★★✰✰ - I needed something light at this 1/3rd of the way through point. This was cute. Bob Hope travels with an heiress to a castle she inherited in Cuba which is supposedly haunted. Someone is out to kill her or frighten her off --but who and why? Most of the story takes place before they get to the castle, and there isn't a very long sequence with actual ghosts, but it's still fun. Some of Hope's jokes don't make sense now. And his sidekick, a black man, is portrayed in a super racist way. If you can overlook those flaws of it's time, it's a watchable romp

OCT 9: Strange Cinema
34. Grave Robbers (1989)☼ - ★✰✰✰✰ - The plot was an amalgamation of cliches (Satanist killed decades ago comes back), all of which have been done better. Low production values, bad acting.... The women in the film did nothing but stand around and scream. Not a backbone among them. I got nothing out of this.

35. Bug (2006)☼ - ★★✰✰✰ - This is a very small movie, taking place mostly in an apartment. It feels more like a play. But in the end, it's pretty much one note (the bug paranoia) and just bleak and sad. Not entertaining. A shame because this is a great cast. I just hated the story.

36. Tales from the Hood (1995)☼ - ★★★★✰ - I really enjoyed this. It feels a lot like the Creepshow movies. All segments were good, but I liked the doll one the best. Each segment had a social message--domestic abuse, gang violence, bad cops. The racism highlighted in most of the segments was uncomfortable but, unfortunately, more evident than ever in our current culture. Clarence Williams was amazing.

37. Quiet Place II (2021)☼ - ★★★★✰ - Good sequel. I love Cillian Murphy and this film has the same nail-biting tension as the first.

39. A Page of Madness (1926)☼ - ★★★✰✰ -I have no idea how to rate this. There was some wonderful b&w imagery in this, but there were no subtitles and it's impossible to follow what's going on. I only knew the custodian was the husband and about the daughter's wedding by reading the synopsis on imdb. Interesting though.

40. Battle Royale (2000)☼- ★★★★★ - Loved it. The fact that these were young kids battling it out made it so much creepier. Good range of characters, good kills. Glad I finally got to watch it.

42. The Eye (2002)☼- ★★★★✰ - The plot has been done before (The Eyes of Laura Mars meets The Sixth Sense), but it's done very well here. I loved the final sequence. The idea of the shadow people is very creepy.

43. Embryo (1976)☼- ★★★✰✰ - Surprisingly decent despite the horrible low-res VHS quality. Fun script, great ending, and the best dog character I've seen on film perhaps ever. Wish there was a better copy of this.

OCT 11: Streaming Originals
44. The Mortuary Collection (2019)- ★★★✰✰ - Second viewing and it's still intense. Gorgeous scenery and great production values. The framing story is decent and has a surprise ending. The best story of the lot is the frat boy story, which is deliciously squicky. Two were just ok and I hated one. Worth a watch.

45. L'Inferno (1911)☼ - ★★★★★ - This is mesmerizing and harrowing. The effects are astonishing for the time. If you have any interest in classic lit or in the afterlife, I highly recommend checking this out.

46. The Ghoul (1933)☼ - ★★★✰✰ - Quite good. Karloff plays an Egyptologist who is dying. He pays his fortune to get a jewel used for eternal life. A variety of people are after the jewel. He dies and is supposed to be buried with the jewel, but what follows is a farce in which a number of different parties are after the jewel including a reanimated Karloff. 54. Bubba-ho-tep (2002)- ★★★✰✰ -- This movie is as much about ageing as it is about the supernatural. Bruce Campbell was terrific as Elvis, old and stuck in a low-rent old folks home in East Texas. There's lots of set up and flashbacks of how Elvis ended up here. The supernatural mystery in the home involves a mummy. Definitely unique.

55. 1408 (2007)- ★★★✰✰ -- I love the setup on this film with Cusak, the skeptic, investigating supposedly haunted hotels and never finding anything real. Then he insists on investigating room 1408 at the Dolphin. Samuel L Jackson is fun, if underused, as the hotel manager who tries to dissuade him by describing all the people who have died in that room. With that intense a setup, it's hard to then pull off a truly scaring haunted room sequence. It fell a bit flat for me. But there were some interesting ideas and effects.

66. Wes Craven's New Nightmare (2011)☼- ★★★✰✰ -- Wow, this was so meta! The actress who plays Nancy is living in LA with her son and husband. She doesn't want to do any more Freddy movies. But someone is calling her who sounds like Freddy and she's having nightmares about Freddy.... This was a creative way to bring back a franchise after the villain was killed off. But I find Freddy movies repetitive in general, so I didn't love it.

67. Sleep Tight (2011)☼- ★★★✰✰ -- Truly creepy thriller in which a concierge in an apartment building spies on his guests and stalks a beautiful young tenant. What elevates this script is the psychological spin. The only way he can feel happiness is to make others miserable. His techniques will make you paranoid about how easy it is for someone to get into your private space and what they can do there.

71. Ichi the Killer (2001)☼- ★★★✰✰ -- Loads of style and an unexpected twist on the personality of Ichi make this a fun watch. The constant violence towards women was hard to stomach, though.

72. Horror Castle (1963)☼- ★★✰✰✰ -Heavy on gothic atmosphere, especially the castle's torture chamber. A bit of a mystery (who IS the red cloaked figure?), Christopher Lee in a minor role with facial scars, and stock footage of Hitler. The backstory of the madman was interesting. I suppose I've watched far too many horror movies this month to get too excited about this one, but it wasn't bad.

73. Dracula: Dead and Loving It (1995)- ★★✰✰✰ - 2.5 stars.I wanted something light during an October 100 horror movie challenge. This was a nice palette cleanser but not one of Mel Brooks' finest. I adore Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles. This simply wasn't as funny, though the performances by Steven Webber as Jonathan Harker, Peter MacNicol as Renfield, and Amy Yasbeck as Mina were all stellar. Renfield stole the show.

74. Scream 2 (1997)☼ - ★★★✰✰ -This is best watched back-to-back with the first movie. I watched that perhaps 2 years ago, and Scream 2 is very much based on #1, with a movie called Stab premiering that fictionalizes the events of the first movie and the plot involving the survivor, Sidney, now in college. The masked killer is on the loose again and killing people close to Sidney. Who can she trust? The reporter, Gale, and deputy Dewey are also back. It's a light slasher with a predictable ending--popular and entertaining, but not very deep or unique.

75. Planet Terror (2007)☼ - ★★★✰✰ -- Great cast in this and plenty of style. Reminds me a bit of a 12 year old's idea of the perfect movie. But hey, nothing wrong with that!

76. Hush (2016)☼ - ★★★★✰ -- What makes this movie unique (ish) is the fact that the writer is deaf and can't hear the killer. There's a creative use of sound design, sometimes the movie going silent in her POV. The script also uses her strengths (vibrations, etc) to turn the tables. The tension is high throughout and I loved the ending. Very well acted and directed. Had some Hitchcockian and Stephen King notes.

77. Zombieland (2007)- ★★★★★ -- I love this nerd-faces-the-apocalypse, found-family zombie movie. I love that it's more about the characters and their relationship than zombie fighting scenes. Don't get me wrong, there are those too, but what elevates this zombie movie from a zillion others is the tone and characters.

78. Dead Snow (2009)- ★★★★✰ -- I saw this years ago. A group of friends go to a remote cabin for the weekend and awaken a Nazi zombie hoard who attack the cabin. On rewatch, it's still as much fun. There's a nice tongue-in-cheek humor with definite Evil Dead vibes, which they even mention on screen. Some funny moments, tension, and tons of gore. Very well done.

79. The Ninth Gate (1999)- ★★★★★ -- I love this movie. I think this is the third time I've watched it. My favorite subgenre of horror is the occult--specifically films that take the occult seriously and don't just copy the old spinning-head-demonic-possession stuff. That's why A Dark Song is in my top 5 films, and I also love As Above, So Below. This film is in that category and does it extremely well, IMHO. The three books that have different illustrations (book nerd alert!), the mysterious angel/demon helper, the rich collectors of the esoteric, European locations, the mystery format... I love it all.

80. Murders in the Rue Morgue (1932) ☼ - ★★★✰✰ -- Lugosi is so creepy and strong in this. Much better than Dracula. He plays a mad scientist/sideshow man who shows "Eric", the ape man. He's determined to prove Eric is a missing link by breeding Eric with a human woman. There's a King Kong-esque finale.

84. Daughters of Darkness (1971) - ★★★✰✰ -- it definitely is a bit slow. Very European in feel. An enjoyable vampire story, but with some weird bits. All the characters were pretty reprehensible. Valerie, the only decent one, was whiny and weak. A fun enough watch. I give it 6/10.

86. Dune (2021)☼ - ★★★★★ -- Loved it! Gah. This is my favorite sci-fi/fantasy story. I loved the David Lynch version, and I love this. TImothee Chalmet is mesmerizing and fits the idea of a young heir better than Kyle MacLaughlan. The only thing I didn't like was that it wasn't the complete story. Apparently, Warner Bros is going to see how Part One does before even greenlighting Part two. I want it now!

87. Candyman (2021)☼ - ★★★✰✰ -- This film has great production values and is very slick. There's a lot to like -- good character development, sympathetic artist lead and his girlfriend, Vanessa Williams as the mom, incorporation of the original story... But it is very "woke" with gentrification and the slaughter of innocent black men being the "stain" that created the Candyman. It's not bad, but it's very heavy-handed. The death scenes are mostly off camera or very remote. Not quite up to the original.

89. The Empty Man (2020)- ★★★✰✰ -- It was very long and had a lot of different elements that made it feel like a mash-up. An urban legend (empty man), a prologue in Bhutan, a missing girl, suicidal teens, a weird cult... and the ending felt a bit like Angel Heart where the protagonist has been set-up all along. I agree with others that I didn't feel like I understood the ending.

91. The House by the Cemetery (1981)☼ - ★★✰✰✰ -- The terrible English dubbing hurts this film, especially that of the weirdly beautiful child actor, Bob. A family moves into a house by the cemetery and the father is researching the man who lived there previously, a professor who killed his family there. Bob starts seeing a ghostly little girl. A strange young nanny shows up. This is a mishmash of ideas, from a hand wielding a knife (serial killer) or an undead zombie-like prof in the basement, to ghosts. The gore is over the top disgusting. Feels like a budget Amityville. Not terrible, but not my jam.

94. Freaky (2020)- ★★★★✰ --My favorite type of horror movie--slick production, great actors, lots of style, and a sense of humor along with the thrills. The best part of this is watching Vince Vaughn act like a teenaged girl. Newton did a great job too.

95. Wolf Creek (2005)☼ - ★★✰✰✰ --I put off watching this forever since I'm not a fan of torture porn. Finally watched it. On the good side, the torture-y segments were not the entire film. There's a good deal of set-up of the characters, which I found realistic and engaging. The early menace, when you know something will happen, but the characters don't, was effective and tense. But the violence was intense. Not something I'd rewatch.

101. Possessor (2020)- ★★★✰✰ -- I really liked the sci-fi concept behind this, but it was SO VIOLENT. Lots of vicious repeated stabbing, gunshots, blood... it was a bit much. The concept involves a company where they can kidnap someone, put an 'implant' in their head, and then an agent can take over their brain and make them do things. Of course, it goes terribly wrong. Well worth watching if you can take the brutality.

104. Stepford Wives (1975)- I watched this years ago and just rewatched for a Halloween challenge. It's such a great concept (think pre-cursor to Handmaid's Tale meets Disney animatronics). The idea carries it through what is a mild amount of action and straight-forward plot. The best character is Paula Prentiss as Bobbie, the free-spirited best friend who mocks all the docile housewives of Stepford. Even her robot scenes steal the show.

105. Hellbound: Hellraiser II (1988)☼- ★★★✰✰ -- Tons of body horror in this. It was okay but much less focused than the original. Kind of all over the place.

And then there were rape and murder scenes that were horrific and so explicit. The rape of the waitress was especially hard to take. Interesting since it was based on a real case.

108. Piranha 3D (2010)☼- SPRING - ★★★✰✰ - Set during Spring Break in Florida. Lots of gore and some tongue-in-cheek absurdity. Fun creature feature--if you can stomach an abundance of bare boobs and sexist b.s. I liked Elizabeth Shue in this.

109. Dead of Winter (1987)☼- WINTER - ★★★★✰ - This felt a bit like a play. There was a convoluted (and unlikely) thriller plotline that was unique and kept you guessing. Fantastic cast with Mary Steenburgen and Roddy McDowall. I liked the frigid winter storm atmosphere and the claustrophobia it induced.

110. Half Light (2006) - FALL - ★★★★✰ - I quite enjoyed this. It was a softer, "ghost/thriller" and was a nice change from some of the harder-core horror I've been watching. Add gorgeous scenery, some fall leaves, and a hunky lighthouse keeper, and I'm all in.

111. Body Bags (1993)- ★★★✰✰ -- Made for TV movie in which John Carpenter plays morgue attendant and tells the story of various people in body bags. The segments include a serial killer who attacks a girl who works night shift in a gas station, a man with thinning hair who gets a radical treatment, and a baseball player who loses an eye and gets a replacement from a serial killer. The style is tongue-in-cheek and I loved the morgue segments. Fun.

Awful effects, not sure whose decision it was to scrap the practical effects they had already started. Seriously, was there one producer or anyone involved in making this film who stood up and questioned the cartoonish effects? 3/10
3)Don't Be Afraid of the Dark ('10) - (BLU RAY) I learned the best way to connect with your boyfriend's daughter is to fight some evil fairy folk. 4/10

4)Malignant - (streaming) I learned to make sure your surgeon informs you of ALL the risks before undergoing any risky surgery. Lesser James Wan output. Once the twist hits, becomes a completely different film and some of the scenes look outright silly and cartoonish, but I'm ok with it. 5/10
5)Darkroom - (BLU RAY) I learned that if you're being stabbed from the backseat while driving, don't ease off the gas and gently apply the brake to a easy stop. Give that sucker some gas so they go flying! 4/10

21)Inferno - (BLU RAY) I learned to not attempt putting out a curtain fire by yourself. Same formula that Suspiria follows and WOW at that soundtrack, but I'll always prefer Suspiria. 7/10

I understand the fan divide, but I appreciate the new direction and the approach of taking the story away from Laurie for a moment to focus on the townspeoples' history for the evil in their town. 7/10
35)Pet Sematary 2 - (BLU RAY) I learned not to wear a scarf while driving a motorbike. Nothing interesting here and a pale comparison to the first film. 4/10
36)Nightmare Beach - (BLU RAY) ? I liked how the killer's outfit looks exactly like Wolverine's costume in the first X-Men film. And I call BS on an elderly priest being able to manhandle a college football athlete. 6/10

38)Near Dark - (BLU RAY) I learned a simple blood transfusion is all it takes to reverse vampirism. Love Bill Paxton being nuts the entire movie and some overall good effects. Highly enjoyable for first time view. 7/10

39)House of Wax ('05) - (BLU RAY) I learned that although your boyfriend and friends may hate you for it, it's a good idea to bring your juvenile brother on road trips. Not a good slasher, but imo, the climax with the melting museum is just thrilling enough to make it stand out. 6/10
40)All Hallow's Even - (BLU RAY) I learned to definitely not watch any random VCR tape found in a child's trick or treat bag, especially with the children. Watched primarily for Art the clown as I loved Terrifyer a few years back. An appetizer to Terrifyer if you will, but still enjoyable for an amateur film. 6/10
41)American Psycho - (4K BLU RAY) I learned to back out of any room immediately that has newspaper on the floor but the owner's aren't painting or own any pets. A masterpiece, and my favorite horror film in last 20 years. Infinitely quotable. 10/10

43)The Beach House - (BLU RAY) I learned that life is nothing more than a giant primordial soup. Picked this as I read good reviews with some saying it's one of Shudder's better originals, and it wasn't disappointing but nothing spectacular. 6/10

You can tell the people involved are having fun with their creation with the director having a continued cameo and reference to his second film. The Vernon character was fun with his Tony Todd impression and the "biscuits and gravy" song which I bet he doubted would make it into the film. 8/10

A surreal dream-like film that contrasts aristocracy versus the new trend of free love. Didn't hold my attention for every second, but easily is intriguing and thought provoking necessitating a re-watch. 7/10
