Evil - Season 1
Locke & Key - Season 1
The Haunting of Bly Manor - Season 1

October 1
1. The Call (2020)*
Complicated but enjoyable. I hate phones. Also fire extinguishers are scary.
Body Count - 5
2. Pontypool (2008)*
More stressful than scary. Very well done, though very odd.
Body Count - 6
October 2
3. Army of the Dead (2021)*
A good, fun zombie movie. Fire extinguisher to the rescue in this one!
Body Count - 35
October 3
4. Ghostwatch (1992)*
Fun and creepy. It felt like watching one of the original found footage movies.
Body Count - ?
October 4

Body Count - 6
October 8

12. The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan (2018)*
Like a true crime/horror mashup. Spooky & creepy.
Body Count - 2
13. Malignant (2021)*
I really wanted to like this. I like James Wan's movies usually. The story just didn't catch me. Amazing effects though.
Body Count - 48
October 10
14. Critters (1986)
This was just as fun as I remembered it being.
Body Count - 2
15. Blair Witch (2016)*

I went into this with low expectations and actually enjoyed it.
Body Count - 7

I can't decide if I love or hate this because it was so true. Definitely one I'll be thinking about for awhile.

Week 3 Comments

77. The Torture Chamber of Dr. Sadism (1967) (The Eurocrypt of Christopher Lee Collection) Blu-ray 6.5/10
A lawyer and a noblewoman are invited to the castle of a count who died 35 years ago. Takes a while to get to the castle but the coach trip is filled with dangers and eerie forests. The ruined castle has tons of strange and atmospheric rooms and yeah, torture devices. The sets may be a little on the cheesy side at times but are generally effective. Lee's roll is not huge but it is significant.
78. Black Zoo (1963)* (WB Archive Collection) 5/10
Michael Gough plays the owner of a private zoo who uses his furry friends for murder. Pretty average all around but the cast is good and there are a few neat scenes like a funeral in an animal graveyard. There's also a bit of strangeness in the organization Gough runs which believes in soul transference for animals.
79. The Invisible Ray (1936) (Universal The Bela Lugosi Collection) 9/10
Karloff plays a scientist who discovers the location of an element more powerful than radium by looking into the past using a ray from the Andromeda galaxy! This is straight out of the SF pulp magazines of the day. Lugosi plays a fellow scientist studying astro-chemistry This is probably his most sympathetic roll and he does an excellent job. The Universal sets are great, especially in the first part of the movie and the end is amazing.
October 23
80. Absurd (1981)* Blu-ray 6/10
Italian version. An inhuman fiend who is almost impossible to destroy leaves a trail of blood and guts through a small town in New York. Not bad. Very gory kills and some exciting scenes but other parts go on a little too long and tension begins to boarder on tedium. George Eastman is very good as the killer and we get a pseudo scientific explanation of why he's hard to kill.
81. Cementerio del terror aka Cemetery of Terror (1985) Blu-ray 6.5/10
For a lark, some teenagers steal the body of a supernatural serial killer, take it to a cemetery, and read passages from an old book they found in an abandoned house. And it's Halloween. Ooooops. The first half is a basic slasher plot featuring the teens. The second half is a zombie movie featuring some younger kids. I had a really good time with this.
82. The Bermuda Triangle (1978)* (The Cardona Collection #1) Blu-ray 5/10
A ship with a family of scuba divers enters the Bermuda Triangle and strange things begin to happen. This movie is not full of excitement but it does have a lot of stuff going on. Besides all the Bermuda Triangle weirdness there's also an evil doll, undersea ruins, sharks, a dysfunctional relationship, and a little twist at the end. Sometimes it just seems to plod along but it isn't ever boring although it runs too long.
October 24
83. Symptoms (1974)* Blu-ray 7.5/10
Two women go to stay in an isolated country manor owned by one of them. The visitor soon begins to get the feeling that they are not alone in the house. Totally absorbing, slowly paced at first but by the end things happen very fast. A claustrophobic atmosphere in the house and even in the gloomy forest scenes which get darker as the film progresses until there is an almost constant storm matching the rising tension. Well acted and photographed.
84. Medousa (1998)* 6/10
In modern Greece, police are puzzled by the clothed statues that are appearing everywhere. The head of a gang of thieves may have a clue to the mystery. Interesting film without any scares has an almost dreamlike quality at times and an eerie feeling that steadily grows. Many of the locations add to the atmosphere and some are truly amazing. There are two simultaneous stories going on that only get close to each other at the end.
85. The Blood Rose (1970)* 5/10
A famous painter's new wife is crippled and disfigured by a fire. He eventually finds a disgraced surgeon who may be able to help. Touted as "The first sex-horror film ever made", there isn't much of either from today's perspective. Slow moving although there are a few creepy scenes and I have to admit the climax, which gets a little crazy, took me by surprise.
86. The Killer Must Kill Again (1975)* 6/10
A husband pays a killer to dispose of his wife. A different kind of giallo. We know who the killer is and the motive but all doesn't go well and the focus of the film is on the difficulties and how the murderer deals with them (hint - more killing). Interesting and suspenseful with a few bloody scenes.
87. Inquisition (1977)* Blu-ray 6.5/10
Paul Naschy plays a witch hunting judge who is attracted to a village girl who suspects that he had her lover killed. Set in France during the Inquisition this has a good period feel and a very interesting story line which goes in a different direction than say Witchfinder General. There are real witches here although whether they have actually made a pact with Satan or just imagined it is unclear.
October 25
88. Son of Frankenstein (1939) (Frankenstein Complete Legacy Collection) Blu-ray 7/10
Frankenstein's son returns to the family castle and is enticed by Igor to recharge the monster. The sets are done in a totally different style but are still striking and creepy when necessary with good use made of shadows. The acting is good although I was less convinced by Rathbone this time around especially in the later scenes. Too much time spent on a cute child in what I think is the longest of the classic Universal monster movies.
89. Demon Witch Child (1975)* (on Creature Features) Streaming YouTube 3.5/10
A young girl is possessed by the spirit of a recently killed witch. Evil stuff happens. This is a bad movie. The dub is terrible but does offer some hilarity in return. If the story is anything like what the dub represents, this was bad even in Spanish. The best part is the makeup job when the girl gets the head of the old witch. That's really creepy. Inspired by The Exorcist but the story is very different.
90. Scanners (1981) Blu-ray 7/10
Humans with powerful psychic powers battle for the fate of the human race. Well paced with effects that still hold up today. Interesting SF story has a few twists and even though I remembered most of them this was still very entertaining.
91. The Frighteners (1996)* Blu-ray 6.5/10
After an accident a man becomes able to see and communicate with the spirits of the dead and tries to stop a horrible apparition from wantonly killing people. Action packed right from the start and a lot of fun with some funny lines and effects that still hold up. There may be a bit too much relentless action for my taste and there aren't any big scares but once the film was over I was very satisfied with the experience.
October 25
92. The Invisible Man Returns (1940) (The Invisible Man Complete Legacy Collection) Blu-ray 6/10
A scientist uses his brother's invisibility serum on a good friend who has been condemned to be hanged. Straightforward and efficient crime story with some elaborate and well done invisibility tricks. The decent into madness is well done but Claude Rains did it a little better. The Universals seem be be taking on a different tone although I can't say exactly how. There seems to be less atmosphere and more direct story telling.
93. Pandemonium (1982)* Blu-ray 6/10
Spoof of slasher movies is very silly and also very funny. Paul Reubens in particular cracked me up in almost every scene he's in. Throw in some classic stars from the past and it's a heck of a good time appealing to the part of me that likes The Three Stooges.
94. The Visit (2015)* (Blumhouse 8 Movie Horror Collection) 6.5/10
Two older children go for a weeks stay with grandparents who they have never known. It quickly seems that something is not right. Good build up of tension and even if I suspected what was going on early on it didn't make things any less suspenseful. The story seemed to loose something at the end though which seemed too jumbled.
95. [Rec]4 (2014)* (The [REC] Collection) Blu-ray 6/10
Zombies on a ship! Picks up soon after the end of the second film. Solid conclusion to the franchise has lots of action and reveals a little more detail about the source of the infection.
October 27
96. Death Bed: The Bed That Eats (1977) 4.5/10
A demonic bed consumes those who lay on it in a flurry of pee colored soap bubbles. Mesmerizing due to the droning of the narrator, the soundtrack, and the repetitive nature of what plot there is. I'm not sure how a film can be kind of dull and kind of interesting at the same time but this one pulls it off.
97. Dr. Cyclops (1940) (Classic Sci-Fi Ultimate Collection Vol. 2) 6.5/10
A scientist discovers a way to shrink living creatures using a radium ray and uses it on some unwanted visitors. Probably my favorite movie with this theme. The jungle setting and mad scientist (expertly played by Albert Dekker) provide interesting challenges for the heroes. The first part of the film has a great SF pulp feel to it.
98. Beware My Brethren (1972)* 5/10
A young man, brought up in a strict religious cult, does holy work in his own unique way. Good cast, especially Patrick Magee as the head of the cult, in a grim sometimes sleazy story with doses of unsubtle social commentary. Murders are sometimes savage but not particularly bloody. Rated R
99. Spellcaster (1988)* Blu-ray 5/10
Seven contest winners go to an old castle in Italy for a weekend of partying and the chance to win a million dollars. Of course, they quickly begin to disappear. Some really great looking creatures are the best part of this almost light hearted story of supernatural mayhem. Everything else is just mediocre.
October 28
100. The Fear (1995)* Blu-ray 6.5/10
A graduate student gets some people together (including some friends) in a remote cabin to explore their deepest fears as fodder for this thesis. Unsettling and deadly stuff begins to happen. Good movie with a unique and well done killer keeps building up the tension until it explodes into a chaotic climax that leaves too many plot treads still dangling. I didn't care for the two main characters and seriously, this guy should have been thrown out of school for the unethical way he handled his "research" and the high body count that resulted from his group therapy session. This would be the last shrink I'd want to go to for help. Still, very entertaining.
101. The Deeper You Dig (2019)* Blu-ray 7.5/10
A man accidentally kills the teenage daughter of a tarot card reader and hides her body. Soon both the man and the mother feel the presence of the girl. Very good film nicely photographed with good acting by the three leads. It does move slowly but I didn't mind that and there is some buildup of tension. The end took me by surprise and I really liked it.
102. The Hatred (2018) (Bonus in The Deeper You Dig set) Blu-ray 5.5/10
A girl seeks revenge on the rogue soldiers who murdered her family. She uses one of their own who was hung as her instrument of vengeance. Beautifully photographed but the simple plot can't support the leisurely pacing. Also, the narration which sometimes does a good job setting the atmosphere is too flowery at other times distracting from the experience.
103. Bingo Hell (2021)* Streaming Amazon 6/10
A senior citizen battles demonic forces centered in a new bingo hall. Sounds a little silly but it's just as much about the characters and community as the horror element although that isn't slighted. Some gooey deaths add to the fun but the plot is very predictable.
104. The Bat (1959) Streaming Amazon 5/10
A masked, clawed killer stalks the halls of a stately mansion rented by a mystery writer. Some big names in the cast but an average effort. I must have seen this before since I immediately knew who The Bat was but that's pretty much all I recalled.
October 29
105. Black Friday (1940) (Universal The Bela Lugosi Collection) 6/10
Karloff plays a "mad" scientist who saves a good friend's life by transplanting part of a gangster's brain into his body creating a Jekyll and Hyde personality. Karloff is good in his role but Lugosi only has a small part as another gangster. The surprise standout here is Stanley Ridges who does a great job switching between mild mannered professor and brutal thug with only a change in hair style and color.
106. Blood Beat (1983)* Blu-ray 5.5/10
A supernatural samurai stats slaughtering deer hunters in Wisconsin. What the heck did I just watch? This is a weird movie with not so good acting and cheap and cheesy special effects although the blood is well done. It's actually a pretty fun ride but I like some kind of explanation in a movie like this. One is hinted at, characters say others need to tell something to someone else (they never do) and there a very brief montage from WW2 (never explained) but I want just a little bit more. Never boring just frustrating.
107. Night Killer (1990)* Blu-ray 4/10
A killer with a rubber fright mask and a Freddy like glove terrorizes a city. The only person who has seen his real face and lived got amnesia from the trauma. More like a giallo than I thought it would be. No motive is given for most of the murders (just madness?). I didn't care for this one much though many things are explained by the end it is just nasty at times and the dialog and its delivery is often substandard. The music is loud and obtrusive and adds little.
108. The Blackcoat's Daughter (2015)* Blu-ray 6/10
Two girls are left waiting at a boarding school when their parents fail to show up to take them home for winter break. Very slow burn switching story lines several times. Lots of atmosphere with increasing feelings of uneasiness and isolation. The journey is an interesting one but I have mixed feelings about the payoff.
October 30
109. The H.P. Lovecraft Collection Vol. 2 Dreams of Cthulhu (2008)* 6/10
Short films containing "Rough Magik", a British television pilot (41 min.) and the short films "Terrible Old Man' (33 min.), "From Beyond" (20 min.), "Experiment 17" (5 min.), and "Experiment 18" (10 min.). Good stuff. My favorite was "The Terrible Old Man" closely followed by "Rough Makgik" about a government sponsored organization trying to stop the awakening of Cthulhu. It's a shame the show wasn't picked up.
110. The Unnamable (1988)* Blu-ray 5/10
College students explore an old abandoned house that contains a deadly secret. Basic monster stalks kids in a house movie is pretty good and does have a little Lovecraft feel in some places but not a whole lot. The creature design is very good and pulled off well. Acting is not the best, it can be flat, but the gore effects are good and there is some spooky atmosphere in places.
111. The Color Out of Space (2019)* Blu-ray 7/10
After a meteorite lands on a remote farm, the family begins to notice strange changes taking place in the area. Intelligent adaptation of the Lovecraft story. There is a lot of eerie atmosphere that slowly gets more and more creepy as the family's relations with each other disintegrate. The finale is too long for my taste with too much bombast but there is some cosmic horror to be found in the noise and flash. One of the better mainstream Lovecraft films.
112. Dead Tongues (2016)* 4.5/10
After a linguist commits suicide, his ex-girlfriend and his twin brother try to understand his research using a video diary he left. Based on an Lovecraft story, this seemed too long for the material although it does feel A lot like Lovecraft. The acting was adequate but something more was needed to make this stand out.
113. Daughters of Satan (1972)* (MGM Limited Edition Collection) 5/10
The spirits of witches who died hundreds of years ago take over modern women to get revenge on the ancestor of the man who condemned them to death. Standard plot with just a few minor variations but done well enough. Filmed in the Philippines, Vic Diaz does make an appearance. The leader of the satanic cult wears an outfit straight from the circus as she whips those who offend.
October 31
114. Killer Klowns From Outer Space (1988) Blu-ray 6/10
Extraterrestrial clowns invade Earth. Silly but fun. The clowns and the related sets are very well done. Some of the clown stuff is downright funny. Human characters are often doofuses but they fit right in to the tone of the story.
115. House IV (1992)* Blu-ray 5/10
After her husband is killed in a car accident, a woman and her daughter move into an old, run down, and haunted house that was owned by the man's family for generations. Mild haunted house story has no scares but does have some weird fun that kept my interest. There's also a very gross gangster boss and a nasty brother-in-law added to the mix. Not a classic but a good time.
116. Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) (Halloween the Complete Collection Deluxe Edition) Blu-ray 7/10
Not as scary as the first two but more entertaining than some to the later efforts. There is some bloody stuff (which I had forgotten about) and some nice suspense and paranoia.
117. The Alligator People (1959)* 6/10
Beverly Garland plays a woman whose husband disappears from a train on their honeymoon. She tracks him to a creepy plantation in the Everglades. Slow start but the last part of this movie is pretty darned good.
118. It Conquered the World (1956) VHS 6.5/10
A creature from Venus invades the Earth. One of the great schlocky monsters of all time. More Beverly Garland (never a bad thing) along with Peter Graves and Lee Van Cleef, directed by Corman. One of my favs.
119. I Married a Monster From Outer Space (1958) 6/10
After a year of marriage a women wonders why her husband isn't at all what he was like before they got married. Well, he looks the same .... Cheesy title but cool looking aliens and good effects that still hold up today. Not a deep film but a bit more than the typical 50's monster movie.
120. The AGFA Horror Trailer Show with Commentary (2021)* Blu-ray 5/10
Good commentary is only occasionally trailer specific but talks about how this was put together, who did what, and trailer memories from the past among other things. Interesting conversation is worth hearing.

03. Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark¹ (2019) Those expecting more sleaze and viscera than what's found in the source material, are bound to be disappointed.
Oct. 04
04. The Wicker Man (1973)
05. Magic Cop Qu mo jing cha (1990)

12. Demons Dèmoni (1985)
13. Edge of the Axe Al filo del hacha¹ (1988) Those damn kids and their electronic games. The actual axe-whacking is quite competent, but the rest is so fucking dull.
14. Maggie¹ (2015) Oh no! My daughter! She's bitten! But her infection spreads slowly, allowing for some brooding on the zombification. Subdued Ahnuld Performance
Oct. 09
15. Rasputin: The Mad Monk (1966)

Re: The 17th Annual "October Horror Movie Challenge" (10/1 - 10/31) ***The List Thread***
Title in BLACK = DVD/BluRay from my personal collection
Title in RED = Seen on Youtube
Title in DARK ORANGE = Seen on Netflix
Title in PURPLE = Seen on HBO Max
Title in BLUE = Seen at the movies theater during current theatrical run.
October 1
1. Sisters of Death (1976) Some say this is the precursor to latter day slasher films, predating Black Christmas by year of filming though not year of release since it came out until '76. A group of young women in a house killed off one by one, formulaic to be sure, but you saw it here first.
2. Embryo (1976) Rock Hudson creates a beautiful woman (Barbara Carrera) by injecting a fetus with a rapid growth drug. She turns out to be more than human.
October 2
3. The Hallow (2015) Interesting Irish folk-horror tale about changelings and forest creatures.
4. Malignant (2021) Director James Wan delivers the goods with a refreshing take on an old trope. Curious mix of action scenes and horror that really works and enough twists to keep things interesting.
5. Talos the Mummy AKA Tale of the Mummy (1998) A cast of familiar faces, among them Christopher Lee in a brief cameo. Director Russel Mulcahy has come a long way (down) since he directed Highlander and Razorback, delivering a tepid tale of a mummy who is in fact a bunch of flying bandages brought to life with dated CGI.
October 3
6. Urban Legends: Bloody Mary (2005) By the numbers flick about the ghost of a prom night beauty who comes back to kill the children of her assassins. See Hello Mary Lou, Prom Night II (1987) for a better version of this story.
7. Unearthed (2007) Part of the 8 Films to Die For 2007. A Xenomorph-like creature terrorizes a small town. Decent practical effects combined with CGI.
8. The Gravedancers (2006) Part of the 8 Films to Die For 2007. Some idiots dance on graves after a getting drunk at a friends funeral. The ghosts of the graves they danced on did not like it. Haunting and mayhem ensues.
October 4
9. Christine (1983) Director John Carpenter knows that this is just a killer car story and doesn't try to mess it up with fluff.
10. Bag of Bones (2011) TV mini-series Part 1.
11. Bag of Bones (2011) TV mini-series Part 2 This was second or third viewing for me, and it didn't get any better. The story, based on Stephen King's bloated novel, is overly long and boring for such a bare bones (excuse the pun) story. Mick Garris' pedestrian directing doesn't help any.
October 5
12. Apt Pupil (1998) TOTALLY underrated film that stands head and shoulders among the usual lame-ass Stephen King adaptations. Full of tension from the start to the end. A student discovers a Nazi officer hiding in plain site in 80's USA. Instead of turning him in he uses him to feed his morbid curiosity about war crimes. Director Bryan Singer, take a bow, you did good.
October 6
13. Secret Window (2004) Tepid adaptation of the Stephen King novella. Johnny Depp walking around in baggy clothes and having a perpetual bad hair day. Once the reveal comes, it's like. who cares? Skip it.
14. Night Gallery, S1 (1970) Episode 1: The Dead Man / The Housekeeper. Episode 2: Room With a View / Little Black Bag / The Nature of the Enemy
October 7
15. Underwater (2020) Tightly told tale of underwater horror in a deep sea drilling base. Kristen Stewart delivers a nuanced performance without relying on "bad-ass female hero" clichés. Great effects and a satisfying payoff.
October 8
16. The Two Faces of Dr. Jekyll (1960) A twist on the classic tales as Mr. Hyde is not deformed but a handsome man whose ugliness is on the inside. Christopher Lee co-stars as a total sleaze who lives off his mistress.
October 9
17. The Gorgon (1964) Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing face the mythical Medusa whose stare turns her victims to stone.
October 10
18. The Revenge of Frankenstein (1958) Second in Hammer's Frankenstein series with Peter Cushing now going under the name Dr. Stein to hide his past. The twist here is that he now uses live brains for his reanimated corpses.
19. 30 Monedas (30 Coins) (2020) Episode 1: Telarañas (spider webs) I count the first episode as one entry because it's 1:20 long, which is pretty much feature length. The coins payed to Judas upon betraying Jesus are sought after by those who would use them for evil. An interesting premise and this first episode goes from low-key creepy to full-out monster fest.
October 11
20. WILDCARD 1 - Never Take Candy from a Stranger (1960) More of a thriller (hence the Wildcard) but this movie about an old man pedophile whose wealthy family cover for him and threaten their small community is absolutely chilling. A very bold movie for its time that's lost none of its impact. An ending that hits you in the guts.
21. 30 Monedas (30 Coins) (2020) Episodes: Ouija / El Espejo.
October 12
22. 30 Monedas (30 Coins) (2020) Episodes: Recuerdos / El Doble. This series just gets better and better!
23. Night Gallery, S1 (1970-71) Episode 3: The House / Certain Shadows on the Wall Episode 4: Make Me Laugh / Clean Kills and Other Trophies
October 13
24. 30 Monedas (30 Coins) (2020) Episodes: Guerra Santa / La Casa de Cristal.
25.5 30 Monedas (30 Coins) (2020) Episode: Sacrificio
October 14
26.5 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) Great adaptation and a bravura performance by Frederic March as Jekyll/Hyde. The physical transformation is impressive as Hyde becomes more vile and ape-like in appearance as the story progreses. Still holds up.
27.5 Halloween Kills (2021) One more in the series that I really hoped would bring something new, but no, just more of the same.
October 15
28.5 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1920) Silent version with John Barrymore as Jekyll/Hyde.
October 16
29.5 Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1941) Star-studded version with Spencer Tracy as Jekyll/Hyde and the beautiful Ingrid Bergman as the naive bartender girl who falls victims to Hyde's manipulations.
30.5 House of Mortal Sin AKA The Confessional (1976) A pervert priest tries to get too close to his young female parishioners. Murder ensues. A very British thriller that is sometimes too polite given the disturbing goings-on. Stephanie Beacham (Dracula A.D.) guest stars.
October 17
31. Night Gallery, S1 (1971) Episode 5: Pamela's Voice / Lone Survivor / The Doll
October 18
32. All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (1971) Curious above-average film that explores the social dynamics of teens and how said dynamics become a world unto itself even to the point of murder. More than meets the eye here.
October 19
33. No One Gets Out Alive (2021) Very creepy slow-burn film about strange goings-on in a cheap apartment building. Things take turn for the VERY weird at the end with a very satisfying ending. Based on the novel by Adam Nevill who is one of the freshest voices in horror today.
October 20
34. As Above, So Below (2014) One of the best of the "found footage" sub-genre (not saying much, I know) that really delivers. An archeologist convinces a group to go into the skull-filled catacombs of Paris in search of the Philosopher's Stone. Their journey takes them to the bowels of the earth and of their own psyches.
October 21
35. The Unseen (1980) Barbara Bach encounters a freak living in the basement of a creepy couples' house.
October 22
36. The Monster Club (1981) On of the last films with Vincent Price and John Carradine. Price is a vampire telling Carradine a trio of horror stories. One of the last of the Hammer/Amicus/AIP-style anthology films though this movie is by none of those mentioned. Donald Pleasance and Britt Ekland star in one segment.
October 23
37. The Flesh and the Fiends (1960) Hammer's take on the Burke and Hare story of grave robbers. Peter Cushing gives a touch of class to the proceedings.
38. ATTEND A LIVE EVENT: Dramatic reading of Edgar Allan Poe's The Tell-Tale Heart and two other horror stories.
October 24
39. The Neon Demon (2016) Ultra stylish story about an ingenue (who is in fact, nothing of the sort) who travels to LA to become a model where the competition is fierce. Just how fierce is what brings the horror. A lot of great visuals and a slow-moving story but worth it.
40. VENTURE INTO THE LITERARY WORLD: Later by Stephen King (2021)
October 25
41. Uncanny Annie (2019) Stupid teens play a board game that kills them one by one. We've seen it before.
42. Dead of Night AKA The Night Andy Came Home AKA Deathdream (1974) A young soldier comes home from the war but he's not as he used to be.
October 26
43. One Missed Call (2008)
October 27
44. When the Lights Went Out (2012)
October 28
45. The Hunger (1983) Ultra stylish vampire flick that still holds up. The film feels at the same time modern and timeless. Catherine Deneuve is perhaps the most beautiful vampire in cinema.
October 29
46. The Gallows AKA The Damned (2008)
47. ATTEND A VIRTUAL EVENT: Tales of Pre-Hispanic Supernatural Beings
October 30
47. ATTEND A VIRTUAL EVENT 2: Dramatic reading of Edgar Allan Poe's The Cask of Amontillado, an H.P. Lovecraft tale plus one new horror story.
48. Puffball (2007) Weird as hell movie set in Ireland about fertility magic.
October 31
49. Antlers (2021) Pretty damn good folk horror tale set in rural America. The atmosphere is chilling, the effects are great and the acting above average.
50. Our House (2018)
Title in RED = Seen on Youtube

20) The Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror I - X (1990 - 1999) D: Various
October 12th
21) * Petey Wheatstraw (1977) D: Cliff Roquemore
22) * It Came From Outer Space (1953) D: Jack Arnold
23) * Inferno (1980) D: Dario Argento
October 13th

October 18th:
36) They Live (1988) D: John Carpenter
37) Videodrome (1983) D: David Cronenberg
October 19th:
38) * My Bloody Valentine (1981) D: George Mihalka I enjoyed this much more than BLACK CHRISTMAS, another Canadian slasher film of the same era. The mine was an inspired location, and the work equipment and outfits were used well. It amused me to see the actor who played the killer went on to become an animator for THE SIMPSONS and FAMILY GUY. Sad to see the guy who played Hollis (also starred in MEATBALLS) died from brain cancer at only 51.
October 20th:
39) * Bride Of Chucky (1998) D: Ronny Yu The only other movie I remember seeing Jennifer Tilley in was her Oscar nominated role as Olive in BULLETS OVER BROADWAY. Watching her in BRIDE OF CHUCKY makes me feel like she should have been in a lot more and a lot better movies. She's a gift.
40) * Doctor Sleep (2019) D: Mike Flanagan Overall, I thought Stephen King's novel was terrible, so I made zero effort to see the movie until now. I found the movie genuinely horrifying, dramatic, and satisfying. Boy, did they ever fix that dumb book. Although it was hard for me to take many of the call-backs to THE SHINING seriously, they did make me smile, especially the little things like Danny reading an issue of Playgirl (I assume it's even the same issue Jack Nicholson was leafing through).
October 21st:
41) * Special Effects (1984) D: Larry Cohen This has one of the best movie in-jokes I've seen, where
October 22nd:
42) Night Of The Creeps (1986) D: Fred Dekker
43) Night Of The Living Dead (1968) D: George Romero
October 23rd:
44) The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974) D: Tobe Hooper
October 24th:
45) * The Black Cat (1934) D: Edgar G. Ulmer
46) Ed Wood (1994) D: Tim Burton
October 25th:
47) * Don't Look Now (1973) D: Nicolas Roeg Pretty cool that I can see how influential this movie was on other filmmakers (especially the editing) and still not be taken out of the movie, and be mystified and thrilled as much as I would have been on its original release. Also, afterwards, I realized I'd had the ending spoiled for me years ago, but had forgotten, so even that part remained a mystery to me.
48) * Strait-Jacket (1964) D: William Castle Watched on TCM, and during the discussion afterwards the hosts were mocking the phoniness of the axe murders, but honestly I found them very effective, and would have thought them pretty violent for the early 60s.
October 26th:
49) * The Monster (1925) D: Roland West I assumed Lon Chaney was playing multiple roles using heavy make-up, but as the movie went on, I realized no, he was just playing the one role, a mad-scientist, but nothing memorable. I enjoyed the movie, which is a great blend of comedy/horror, just like what I decided ahead of time would be my 50th entry if I got that far:
50) Ghostbusters (1984) D: Ivan Reitman No matter how many times I see it, I love the entire movie. One of my fondest childhood memories is playing in the park in the summer of '84, when my Dad's van pulls up unannounced, and he takes me and my sister to the theatre to see GHOSTBUSTERS. For years afterwards, it's our favourite movie, our favourite game to play is going through the house catching ghosts. I love that it's a movie I enjoy just as much as an adult.
October 27th:
51) * American Horror Story Season 10: Double Feature (2021) D: Various
52) * Dracula (1931) D: Todd Browning The first half is atmospheric and visual, and then the movie takes a nose dive. For crying out loud, there isn't even a shot of Dracula reacting to being killed.
October 28th:
53) * Spiral: From The Book Of Saw (2021) D: Darren Lynn Bousman As I watched, I just assumed this was a generic cop-thriller script they retrofitted into a SAW movie by adding the traps, so I was surprised to find out after this whole movie was Chris Rock's original idea. And I haven't seen a movie with a worse ending since last night's DRACULA.
54) * Casper (1995) D: Brad Silberling I wasn't sure what to expect when I tried this out, but enjoyed it enough to finish. Surprised by the quantity and quality of the cast. I never knew there was a movie with Mel Gibson, Clint Eastwood, Rodney Dangerfield, and Father Guido Sarducci
55) The Simpsons Treehouse Of Horror XXI - XXX (2009-2019) D: Various
October 29th:
56) Arsenic And Old Lace (1944) D: Frank Capra
October 30th:
57) * Freaky (2020) D: Christopher Landon
58) Frankenstein (1931) D: James Whale I always marvel at the great use of sound in this movie (the churchbells and dirt in the cemetery, the thunder storm during the creation, the torches and shouts of the mob). Unlike DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN doesn't suffer from the absence of a music score.
