I liked Antlers (2021). I'll put The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan (2018) and The Feast (2021) on my list. I love Christmas horror movies, but I'm mostly saving them for the holiday challenge. I do plan to watch Silent Night, Deadly Night today since I'm working on my They Shoot Zombies list this challenge.

I saw Antlers at the drive-in. It was the back half of a double bill with Encanto. Needless to say, there was a mass migration after the first film. I liked Antlers. It has a strong cast and solid direction.

This year I’m going to need to wait until I’m on my computer to do the banner question. I don’t know what changed, but since August DVD Talk has not been mobile friendly in the least.
In other news, I just hit 25 with The Rite on AMC. Though I expect to slow down near the end of the month because my fiancé is talking about wanting to visit family in Missouri.

And forgive me if it’s old news and I missed it or forget, but congratulations on the engagement! But they do need to understand that Halloween movie time is a priority.

Ever since that stupid vertical ad showed up a while back, it’s been difficult to see much. The new changes make it even harder. I’ll hop on a pc before Sunday.

For today's theme I caught a Prime-streaming triple feature that proves adding a Halloween setting somehow makes even the most mediocre films watchable...
Boo (2005, despite saying 2022) - Generic asylum flick with Dee Wallace. The ghosts explode when shot, so there's that.
Bad Candy (2020) - The indie spiritual successor to Trick 'r Treat that was obviously heavily influenced by it. Very atmospheric.
The Live Inside Us (2020) - Haunted house film from the people who did The Witching Hour that's beaming with even more atmosphere.
And since today's subset is from Álex de la Iglesia, I'd be remiss to not throw out a huge recommendation for 30 Coins on HBO Max. Absolutely fantastic show that's a bloody perfect follow-up to The Day of the Beast, if you don't mind an 8 episode series. Paul Giamatti is joining season 2. Nuff said.

Thanks Trevor. Not really old news, since I hadn't really shared it with the forum. So you weren't missing anything. She does enjoy Halloween as much as I do. She just doesn't like horror movies. Because they give her nightmares, we have a system worked out though, where when I watch them, she just finds something else to do. And is willing to watch general Halloween content with me or ghost shows.

Watched the Val Lewton Cat's People yesterday, and the Paul Schrader version today. I liked both, but for an early 80s film, the Schrader version holds up great. The story really drew me in, and the pacing kept the movie devoid of any dead spots.
John Heard is the lead, and I had one of those "Mandela-effect" moments, because for years I understood he died in the early 2000s, relatively young, in only his 50s. But when I looked him up, turns out he died in 2017 (which from my old-ass point-of-view is "just a couple years ago").

Spoiler:
Thanks Chad and Hamilton/GW!
I haven't even gotten the chance to catch up with the thread so far. We were hosting my wife's parents last week so I only got one movie in last week. But hey, it is good to be back in the challenge after having to give up midway last year.

My wife is similar. Doesn’t like horror and runs from the room at the really scary or gory stuff, but loves general Halloween and will watch certain “light” films with me, mostly the comedy stuff like Hocus Pocus and The ‘Burbs.

My wife doesn't like most horror movies, either. She likes stuff where children are fighting against something like Monster Squad, The Lost Boys, etc and she likes some of the lighter humorous stuff. So, we watch something like 6-8 together every October. Outside of that, I watch most stuff by myself. I generally research a few movies each year to add to the running list of ones for my wife to pick from the next year that should be in her wheelhouse. It is a little bit of effort, but I enjoy the payoff when we find one that she really enjoyed.

Speaking of Judas’ coins. I forgot to do my usual pimping of reading 100 horror comics this month as well. So far, I’ve only read 16, so am a bit behind schedule. But they’ve been great. DC’s Soul Plumber reminds us that comics should be ridiculous, and does a good job on religious satire imho. But the anthology series from Image, The Silver Coin, is thoroughly wonderful. A coin is cursed and gets passed around over the generations giving power to it’s owners, usually with a catch.

I caught Rob Zombie's Halloween II for the first time last night. Yee-ikes. I understand it's a very divisive film, and I understand what Zombie was trying to do. I'm actually not even opposed to a grounded spin on the franchise that actually does examine brutality and trauma and mental illness... But Zombie is just so not the guy to attempt that.

For the National Park part of the theme today, I’m watching Grizzly II: Revenge Wow, what a weird history behind this film. Filmed in 1983, and not released until 2021! It “stars” George Clooney, Laura Dern, Charlie Sheen, and Gimli. Free on Prime. Probably won’t end up recommending it, other than as a curiosity.

OK, I have finally caught up with the thread!
I've been able to watch 21 movies so far, which exceeded my expectations as last year I only made it to 9, and only 22 the year before. Things will slow down for a bit, but I should be able to ramp up again in the last week of October - hopefully!
What are everyone's favorite first watches so far? I've enjoyed everything I've seen, but Perfect Blue and Demon (1963) were incredible. I think most have heard of Perfect Blue, but I hadn't heard of Demon until recently, and it was directed by one of Fellini's writing collaborators, having even wrote La Dolce Vita. This felt sort of like if Nights of Cabiria was horror movie. It's streaming on Shudder and has no physical release, so check it out if you can!
Also, not sure if it's OK to ask this here, but I've been trying to add my 2022 list to my signature, but it keeps coming with the following error:

My "favorite" first watch so far would be The Night Evelyn Came Out of the Grave (1972) and it's not all that great. A kind of middlin' 70s gothic giallo type film.

I was pretty young when I first saw The Picture of Dorian Gray, probably 1988 or 89, somewhere there abouts, and it really stuck with me. Honestly, I never saw Murder, She Wrote which is probably where she's most well known today, but that movie...that's where I know her from.

It has been really rough at work. I needed to stay late for a meeting last night. When I got home, I was tired, stressed and needing something that would keep me awake and engaged. For the Sake of Vicious did the trick. I'd say it's a combination of horror, action and thriller. There are some good practical fight scenes. It might sometimes stretch credibility the way action films can do, but it managed to get my adrenaline pumping and fully engaged.
I watched Uncle Sam before to qualify for the holiday theme. That was not such a good viewing experience. As it turns out, I would later realize that For the Sake of Vicious also qualified because it takes place on Halloween. So that's another Oct. 31 possibility for people who might be looking for something apart from the usual Halloween selections.

My highest rated films that I had never seen before that I rated 4 stars or higher on a 5 star scale:
Beast (2017 - Streaming)
Woodlands Dark And Days Bewitched: A History Of Folk Horror (2021 - Blu-ray)
Last Night In Soho(2021 - Streaming)
And Al Adamson makes Ed Wood look like both a genius and a competent filmmaker. How the fuck did this guy make so many films and never seem to learn anything?
