I watched Tod Browning's Dracula for the first time last night and I was actually shocked how great it was. I had a little help in the enjoyment department but it really was just like the height of spooky atmosphere. I actually found Bela Lugosi to be the weakest aspect of the film (I learned after that he didn't speak English at the time of filming, so I'm guessing that was the biggest issue).

Curse of Crom was also very enjoyable in a 90s way. Definitely took me back to the style of a lot of stuff I enjoyed as a kid. Like a Goosebumps episode with the budget of a Disney Channel Original Movie.

While I personally don't like it that much you should check out the Spanish version of Dracula which was made at the same time, same sets, different actors. A lot of others do think it's superior so you might too. I grew up in the 80s and Universal monsters like Dracula, Frankenstein, The Mummy were still played quite a bit on local stations and the new AMC cable channel so I still have a good deal of fondness for them but to be honest, as I've gotten older I have more trouble sitting through them even though they're so short. Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, The Invisible Man are still great to me while Dracula, The Mummy, and The Wolfman are harder to sit through. Unfortunately, I suspect those films are going to be increasingly forgotten or at least unseen - I still haven't gone back and watched all the sequels even though I have the blu-ray set. I'm sure I saw a good number of them as a kid but now I wonder if I ever actually will rewatch them.

I'm still plugging away. I hit 100 a couple of days ago. I haven't watched all of the subset films but have seen the minimum of 31, though still plan to watch a couple more. As far as goals, I just have a Halloween film tomorrow to complete themes.

Speaking of Halloween, I'll be at the drive-in tonight for Halloween Ends. I'm still debating whether to take a temporary break and watch Black Adam, which is the first film of the double feature, or just show up for Halloween Ends. I'm leaning toward going to both. It will only hurt my final tally by a couple of movies, and it's not like I'm anywhere close to a personal best or anything.

I'm sort of shocked the month is almost up. As usual, many films I intended to watch have gone unwatched, but I have managed to hit up quite a few, too. The current plan, though that's likely to change, is to try to be completely theme compliant with whatever I watch tomorrow. I guess a lot depends on what I finish up today.

The same friend who has been hosting watch parties all month has another double feature tonight, the original Poltergeist followed by the second Thing ​​​​​​, the one from 1982. Plus tomorrow on her birthday, she plans the original Halloween. I already watched that earlier this month, but I’m looking forward to getting together with my friends to see it again.

I managed to hit 100 on Friday, but it has been slow going since then due to all the sports so far this weekend (Games 1 and 2 of World Series, Penn State-Ohio State, and today’s Eagles game). Hoping to finish strong this evening and tomorrow before Game 3 comes on.

Finally crossed 100. I watched Noroi The Curse on Shudder. I dont get the love for this film or found footage. At two hours it was a real chore.

I feel like people wind up being way too easy on it or too harsh. It isn't as good as the original like some people say nor is it terrible. I would say there is a good time to be had in the movie. There are some fun characters and some fun scenes that give it its own feel. But there are also parts that feel a bit too much like retreading the original and some that feel like a tweak on the original that just doesn't work as well. Its a mixed bag, but one that I think still has a good time in it. However, I do have to space out my viewings more than the first as it gets harder for the good parts to outweigh the weak parts upon frequent viewings.

Day 30 and my list is finally up-to-date for the first time. Well, everything but 4 "temporarily forgotten titles" that may end be being lost to time because I failed to write them down immediately. I hit 100 the previous Sunday. Since I have the day off tomorrow, I plan to go a wee bit crazy with the Halloween-themed viewings, and "crazy" for me is usually no more than 7.

Currently about to pop in the 2 hour 22 minute(!) Terrifier 2 to see if it lives up to the hype.

I feel like I was able to have a therapy session after writing in the Halloween Ends thread. That movie ... wow. I won't go into it much here and won't go into spoiler territory, but I'll just say I find it really strange that this was the trilogy that they set out to make.

No way was that the trilogy they set out to make. Ends seemed like it was very reactionary to the criticisms of Kills.

Last day of the challenge and I'm not quite ready to give up horror. Usually, I'm burned out 10 days in and have to power through but taking breaks for work and other things probably helped out more. Next year, I'll be working from home more, so I'll probably make my 200 goal. Won't be able to hit it this year, however. But I still had a fun time and am going to do the comedy challenge next, although I'm not going to live and breathe comedy like I did in this horror challenge. Tonight, I'll do some Halloween-themed stuff to close it out.

Caught Vicious Fun this morning. I'm not sure I'm going to want to come back to it much, but it sure was a good time for a first time watch. This time of the month, unless it is a favorite, that is pretty much what I am looking for.

It's Halloween, ya'll! Looks like I'll end up somewhere between 125 and 130 this year. That seems to be where I end up most of the time unless I'm slammed with work.
I look forward to this challenge so much. I'm sad it's nearly over, but I definitely got in my October feels this year between 125-ish horror movies, lots of pumpkin flavored things, and copious Halloween decorations.

Thanks for the tip on Vicious Fun. It sounds like a good one to watch today. I'm bummed that it doesn't look like I'll be able to watch the WNUF Halloween Special. It was on Shudder, but now it's not, and I ordered a DVD but it doesn't get here til Weds, so I'm screwed. But I will enjoy watching Halloween Ends and other things.

Can someone remind me about the rules for Nov 1? Werewolves Within is the subset movie. Does it need to be watched between midnight tonight and dawn? Or does all of Nov 1 still count?

I rewatched the old British horror movie It!, which TCM showed. No killer clowns (and I have to wonder how many people start watching expecting clowns when they see this in the cable guide). But you have a Hammer-style movie with Roddy McDowell playing a Norman Bates type (complete with unhealthy attachment to decomposing mother) who gains control of the Jewish mythological monster golem. Cool-looking monster, although the movie frustrates by cutting away from scenes where it seems like the golem is going to do something interesting.

So many horror movies have the trope where the authorities go the longest time without believing in the monster. So it's a change to see detectives suspect a reanimated golem almost from the start. This movie has to have one of the most extreme police responses to a monster I've ever seen:

I was actually telling my finacee about the Spanish version last night haha. I found out that most of the big Universal Monster movies are on Tubi right now and I just finished Bride of Frankenstein, which was pretty good. I also haven't seen Creature from the Black Lagoon in a really long time, so I fell asleep to that last night. It's been very fun filling out this big blindspot in my horror diary.

That was such a bizarre movie. As I recall, the mummified mother was completely shoe-horned it at the beginning, and never seen or mention again after that.

There's a later scene with Mom hanging out on a sofa. But you'd really think it was leading up to a big reveal scene where one of the other characters discovers her ... but it never happens.

And weirdly, later in the movie when the police are trying to track down Pimm (McDowell's character) one of the police mentions that his mother disappeared from the funeral home. But we saw her at the beginning of the movie, and weeks of time must have passed by that point. It's almost as if the filmmakers forget they included that early scene, or (more likely) there was some bad editing that lost continuity.

Bride is my favorite of the old Universal horror movies. It has an intentional campiness to some scenes that seems way ahead of its time. But it has a strong emotional heart to it ... the monster is probably at his most sympathetic. The reveal of the "bride" is such an iconic scene and the monster's final words still choke me up a little:

Love the first Creature movie. I don't know if you have the equipment to see it, but the 3D is outstanding (remember the brief 3D craze in the early 50s). There are a couple of gimmicky shots, but mostly it lends a lot of depth to scenery. The two sequels have a big drop in quality (although they're still fun if you like these old horror movies). The first sequel, Revenge of the Creature, is probably more notable for being the screen debut of an actor who would rise to fame in the 60s and 70s:

The subsets can technically be watched anytime before dawn tomorrow to count for completing the subset list, but a purist would only watch it between dusk and dawn tonight. And for it to count as completing the optional theme ‘day’ of November 1st, something has to be watched between dusk and dawn.

It's sad to see this coming to a close, and I'm surprisingly not burnt out at this point. Looks I'm on track to hit 140 this year, if I can keep up the pace without any more outside distractions. I'm going to attempt to get in four more tonight with some H3, Out There Halloween Mega Tape, and the two I close with every year -- Tales of Halloween and Trick 'r Treat, unless the Jack-O Blu-ray compels me. I have the day off tomorrow, otherwise I wouldn't even contemplate attempting a final binge this late in the day, or function properly.

Well, it's essentially everything I was wanting from Halloween Ends, it filled the MM void. It's a gnarly, gore-filled indie slasher with a hint of the supernatural that's insanely better than the original. And it definitely pushes boundaries with the gore, although in a fun way, and didn't go into straight-up torture porn territory like the first. Sure, it could of trimmed the fat by a good 30 minutes, but never became a slog to get through. I only regret not getting to catch it theatrically because it would been an experience to catch it with the right crowd.
